  • We take you to one of the most special motorcycle drag races and in existence, the 50th running of the Truett and Osborn Bike Drags from Kansas International Dragway, to see the amazing Top Fuel Harleys, Turbo Hayabusa and ZX14r drag bikes, and even these very special and rare double engine motorcycles and drag bikes. It’s a motorcycle drag racing fail as one of the double engine bikes blows up! We also catch up with event promoter Scott Truett and legendary drag racer Marion Owens to find out why legends like Elmer Trett once built double engine Harleys and why they are no longer produced.

use to keep up with owens all the time in the magazines i read. use to think if he'd slim down a bit, he'd go even faster. was thinking about him the other day and wondered to myself 'maybe being heavier gave him better traction and actually made him faster.' good to see he's still kickin'.

I distinctly remember one of the biggest cycle magazines doing a drag shootout of the quickest production street bikes around 1970 when I was about 14. As I recall the bikes in the shootout were:
    1). Honda CB750
    2). Kawasaki 500 triple
    3). Suzuki T500
    4). Harley Davidson Sportster
    5). Triumph 650 Bonneville
    6). BSA 650 Lightning
As I recall the quickest bike was in high 12’s and the slowest in the low 14’s. I must have read that article a dozen times poring over every single spec and result!

They used to get paid just to show up with a double in the late 60's early 70's when they were popular, just for the record the first doubles appeared in the late 50's not in the 70's lol At one time the money was a big to do and huge arguments ensued. They "thought" that was the way to go ???? THAT 'WAS' the way to go !!!! Early 70's Doubles flat out buried the single engine fuel bikes ! They made enough more power that they offset the extra weight. When you were going as fast as you could go with a single, it was a way to go faster. You could supercharge, but the Harleys liked to blow up when you did that to them ! So the mighty Doubles reigned for several years. Everyone who was winning was running Doubles ! There were Double Sportsters, Double Shovel heads, Double Triumphs, Double Nortons, double everything ! And they all were running faster than any single engine pushrod motors ! Doubles were just plain BAD ASS !!
You can build the motors far bigger today than back then. Bigger cases, etc. For example Grandaddy Joe Smiths Double was 102 "er motors. Marion Owens ran 108"ers Elmer Trett ran two 96" ironhead Sportster motors, and was the first Harley into the 7 second bracket ! Parts are available now to build much 'bigger', and THAT my friend, is what happened to Doubles !! So when you say, " they thought" that was the way to go", you're not giving credit where it was due ! The Doubles were 'intimidating behemoths' in their day ! And they were a sight and sound to be remembered for the rest of your life ! Too bad you missed them! And they won one hell of a lot of races before their days were done ! Just ask "Grandaddy Joe Smith" !
If you're going to report on things, it's best to get your story down properly. Give credit where it's due, and remember the men and machines who busted their backs, Knuckles, and bank accounts to go faster in their day... They were men of renown... the "baddest MF'ers in the valley" ! And they inspired thousands of us to go faster, with our Street Fighters, and race track 'Diggers' ! I can't help wonderin'... what two 160 " motors on fuel would be like...... Color me gone....
