@SparkyClark19 While Midsommar and The Wicker Man have similarities, I don't think they're dealing entirely with the same subject. I read The Wicker Man as being about the naivete of modern Christians when dealing with the occult, whereas Midsommar is more about how vulnerable, wounded people are easily integrated into cults. I felt like the "fiery sacrifice" ending was Aster's way of tipping his hat to Wicker Man, though. I also think Midsommar is a fascinating Rorschach test of a film; I distrust people who see it as having a happy ending.

Only Ari Aster has the ability to make a movie about 2020 that will work, tonally. His is a tone that walks the razor thin line of humor and despair. His ability to create ever-so-slightly elevated worlds. Worlds that fuel the deepest of human anxieties. Worlds of which the viewer knows they are barely scratching the surface of whatever is going on elsewhere. I will be fist in line for this.
