6 guys at, let's say, $30/hr for wages (though these guys would likely be twice that), unemployment insurance, etc. So for 2 hours that would be $360. So basically your first cord of wood would be to pay the guys. I would think your second would go toward machines (loan payment plus fuel and maintenance), the building, and utilities. Also factor in transportation of the final product. It really seems like one cord in 2 hours goes to profit or expansion. That's assuming you don't pay for the raw materials. It would be interesting to run the numbers and figure out where the break even is.

Those X-knife splitters are the bees-knees IMHO, just figuring out how to feed them and not have the knife split/retract-strokes slow other parts of the operation is the key. I've done some work in robotics, finding out the time requirement for each individual step is the key, then accounting for the most common faults in your process design will get you a flow that is sustainable. You can do this with a GoPro and a pad of paper - do the job repetitively over several hours, then divide how many times you did a thing against what the total time was you did the thing for an average cycle time.
Figuring out how to-not handle material/product at each stage should go into your cost model (this includes post-job cleanup, sawdust and wood-chips are a product - don't just toss it). If it's cheaper to do a job with a machine (including maintenance and repairs) than it is to pay a person for the hours you expect them to work (plus train and insure them), then the machine solution wins.
Patents don't matter if you're building it for yourself (not for sale), so if you're capable of building it for less than you can buy it - you'll even know how to fix it when it breaks.
