  • Can you imagine yourself or your kids having to take this muddy, slippery journey everyday?
This is the reality for Tagbanua children who have to make this trip 2x per day in order to cross the 8km water distance between their community home and the town proper. The Tagbanuas are an indigenous tribe based in Coron, Palawan, Philippines and they live in a reality which represents many of the challenges, but also the triumphs of indigenous people.
They live without access to electricity and the basic opportunities that come with it because institutions do not see it as lucrative enough to extend electricity infrastructure to typically low-income areas. The Tagbanuas make money primarily through fishing and weaving. They construct their homes, boats, and nets by hand which is noble, honest work that is unfortunately not met with decent income.
Despite the real challenges they face, they retain a vibrant, joyful outlook on life which comes from a powerful community spirit. They solve problems together and uplift one another, holding that the most important thing in life is the relationships we keep.
