When I started first playing guitar we would differentiate between the sound (coming from the specific equipment used) and the tone (which comes from the player's hands and is his identifiable tonal signature). I don't recall when that shifted and everyone suddenly spoke of the "tones" which you get from this guitar and that pedal. Might have been the time when suddenly even all the small players had a pedal board because of all the different effects they thought they needed. I guess marketing people wanted players to believe that tone is just a matter of equipment (meaning money spent) rather than ability (meaning hearing, taste and practice, practice, practice). I listen to Anson play a few licks at low volume and think: Man, what a tone! You can immediately identify him by his unique tone. Tone is one of the things that distinguishes a true master from the rest of the crowd. Anson is a true master - classy, tasteful, unique and an absolute tonemonster. I just love listening to his playing.

Went to high school with Anson in Plano Texas. Hung out listening to him play out in a barn somewhere in a field. Think is was his grandfather's place. He is a super nice low key guy and loved to just hang out. Even after he got sorta famous I would see him at a club playing and he always remembered me and we would catch up. Now we're 70 years old. Haven't seen him in a long while but hope to see a show this year.

Anson is a legend. I couldn’t help but laugh when he downplayed his guitar skills - the guy’s playing is about as slick as it gets. The kid interviewing him reminded me of Chris Farley playing himself on Saturday Night Live when he interviewed various celebrities.

This kid doesn't know who Levon Helm and The Band are? Yikes. I'm just gonna be glad that he's trying...and giving a platform to one of the greats.
