Satan in Devilman likely acquired romantic feelings for Akira early on in his life that blossomed later on in his human life as Ryo. Crybaby explores this since (SPOILERS) it depicts Ryo fondly reminiscing over old photos and videos of him and Akira after he made the public know that Akira's Devilman. Ryo is shown to be immensely obsessive over Akira. Ryo, as Satan, even hugs Akira's half corpse, not being able to realize that it's best and only friend is gone because of it's own actions. I have a hard time interpreting it. Until the very end, Ryo could not actually love someone (the dropping of the baton). Or are they genuine and because of the feelings that Ryo had subconsciously been developing this whole time? Or are they gestures on purpose, meant to keep Akira by his side? I think that the hugs are a combination of the things you mentioned. The sadness at the end of the anime is that Ryo realizes he loves Akira and has loved him for a while now, hence him turning Akira to a demon to help him survive the apocalypse. He does love him, he just doesn’t know /what/ love is and therefore, can’t place a finger on it. (Proof bring him at the end asking Akira ‘what is this feeling?’ Showing that he just. Genuinely didn’t know what it felt like to love something. He probably subconsciously loved Akira through the series and didn’t know what exactly it meant to be loved due to the fact he himself hadn’t loved anything before. It could also be his possessive nature towards the end, as he realizes he cares for the other (at least in some form.)
No, Ryo was reborn as a human, so this whole time He fell in love with him, and like I was grown up taught and believed that the reason Satan got kicked out of heaven was cuz that like he was like us humans, he had a heart, and so he got Jealous of God and wanted to be him, so God had no choice but to kick him out of heaven. I have a hard time interpreting it. Until the very end, Ryo could not actually love someone (the dropping of the baton). Are the hugs Ryo initiates and follows up to because of his possesiveness over Akira as a tool for his plan? Or are they genuine and because of the feelings that Ryo had subconsciously been developing this whole time? Or are they gestures on purpose, meant to keep Akira by his side? Or just plain reflexes and responses to Akira's own gestures of love? Probably a mixture of all or at least two of those but idk. This show got me thinking 24/7

I think that the hugs are a combination of the things you mentioned. The sadness at the end of the anime is that Ryo realizes he loves Akira and has loved him for a while now, hence him turning Akira to a demon to help him survive the apocalypse. He does love him, he just doesn’t know /what/ love is and therefore, can’t place a finger on it. (Proof bring him at the end asking Akira ‘what is this feeling?’ Showing that he just. Genuinely didn’t know what it felt like to love something. He probably subconsciously loved Akira through the series and didn’t know what exactly it meant to be loved due to the fact he himself hadn’t loved anything before. It could also be his possessive nature towards the end, as he realizes he cares for the other (at least in some form.)
No, Ryo was reborn as a human, so this whole time He fell in love with him, and like I was grown up taught and believed that the reason Satan got kicked out of heaven was cuz that like he was like us humans, he had a heart, and so he got Jealous of God and wanted to be him, so God had no choice but to kick him out of heaven. But like I don’t know if that’s the case in this anime, but anywho, so Ryo aka Satan, fell in love with Akira, and made him become a Devilman, so that when Ryo completes his plan, And whole the end of he world is going on, Akira can survive so that he can be with him forever. So, sorry if this doesn’t make any sense IM.
