  • I recently purchased the Full Boar FBT-8500 1HP Pedestal Drill Press from Bunnings. I couldn't find too much information about the drill online so here's an unboxing if you're considering purchasing the machine.
Here' s a link to the drill press and the store I bought it from :

I just bought the same Drill Press for $379 AUD.
Full Boar 1HP/750W, Floor Mounted Pedestal Drill - W:270 H:460 L:1110 (55kg) from Bunnings Hardware (Australia), and it is awesome. Its height from the floor to the top of the Drill Press (After Assembly), is just under 1560mm/1.56mtrs.
I also paid $499 AUD and ordered:
Full Boar 1HP/750W, Bandsaw With Stand: W:520 H:490 L:1140 (70.5kg), which will be delivered in one week. I had to go to the "Special Orders" section to order it , because they didn't have it in stock as shown on their website. (Search RUclips to view this Bandsaw)
I was told by the Bunnings Staff Member, that the FULL BOAR Brand Name is made by OZITO and it's the name they use for their Heavy Machinery in this line of tools.
My Bandsaw had to be ordered from Ozito in Melbourne Australia, because Bunnings have "Deranged" it. Meaning, they have taken it off the list of tools you can buy from them.
So if you want to buy the Bandsaw as well, you need to go to "Special Orders" at Bunnings as soon as possible, while OZITO still have them in stock at the Melbourne main warehouse. I understand that the cutting blade on this Bandsaw is rubbish and that a Carba-Tech Saw Blade will do a much better job.
The one thing that caught my attention about both of these machines, is the fact, they both have a 1HP/750Watts Electric Motor on them. This is good, because if you decide to make other tools like a wooden Table Saw or Belt Sander, you can detach the motor to use it for that, then change it back over to the other machine when needed.
In the past, I made a table saw using an old floor polisher 3/4HP Motor with spindle. It was an excellent machine. But with these 2 machines (Drill Press and Bandsaw) having both a 1HP Motor, you can swap and change them to other machines as you please.
Also, if one Motor burns out, you have a compatible Motor to replace it with to keep all your essential tools running when needed. The Drill Press comes with a One Year Warranty. I'm guessing it will be the same for the Bandsaw as well. All in all, both of these types of machines are "Essential Tools" for Home Tradesmen, Home Handyman or Hobbyist. The other Essential Tool is always a good Table Saw #1.
Now I need to make some jigs up for the Drill press, so that I can use it as a multipurpose tool. Jigs for making round stool tops and wheels etc, including a solid flat base with a back rail for truing small bowed timber, using a straight long router bit and for molding edges. I'm gonna have me some fun with my new toy :)
By the way, thanks Mate for making this video. I did a search for this Name Brand and found your video. After assessing your video, I could see that you used a moderate amount of effort, dragging it across your garage floor. That told me it was "Heavy" and believe me, it was lol.
A better way to assemble the Drill Press, is to lay it on the floor on its side and attach all the pieces, followed by the head stock to the post, rather than trying to lift it above your head to fit it onto the post. The Head Stock is heavy and the heaviest piece.
To prevent wear, rusting and jamming, I greased the post, all threads, the 2 rods holding the motor on, shaft of chuck and spline and whatever else was needed as I assembled it.
Safety First: Once it is all assembled on the floor, then you lift it a little, put a thick piece of something under the head, then maybe if needed, a chair, then lift it up onto its free standing base. It takes less effort doing it this way and you avoid pulling muscles or hurting your back. Otherwise, ask someone for help if you personally can't do it on your own.
"AND" the answer to the other question you were about to ask is: No! I don't work for any of them or anyone (Retired Tradesman).
In conclusion, I have added as much info as I can, to save you all a lot of time, from asking many questions. Hope what I have shared helps and all the best to you :)

I have the slightly smaller 750W drill(which I love!!!). Mine has infinitely variable speed so the top cover does not hinge up, but it still wouldn't start when I first installed it. This turned out to be a similar safety switch on the guard. Even though I did not have it fitted, it is still necessary to pivot the mount to where it would put the guard in front of the drill, then it works properly.

My only issue is that mine has about a 16th of an inch of play in it (its a realy crappy one) so it kinda sucks when it comes to metal because it can move around.

Great review Robin for prospective buyers. Can you please comment on accuracy i.e. the drill bit spins in an absolute vertical straight line or does it wobble a bit? Given Full Boar is actually Ozito, I was a bit concerned about the accuracy and precision. It would be great if you could please share your experience.

    • @RobinLewisMakes

So far I’ve been happy with it, for the work I do. This is the first drill press I’ve worked with so it’s hard to compare, but I’ve never thought, “I wish it was more accurate”. I would imagine there would be more accurate machines out there but for an intermediate wood worker I’m more than happy with it. Very happy I went with the pedestal version. I would recommend it to anyone.

Craig Laird If you haven't bought this yet, trust me it's a good buy. I would never buy anything ozito but I know most drill presses are the same thing copied from each other so I was pretty sure this would be fine. Bought this and it works great, I'll be using this on my car modifications and my engineering project assignments from now on.

Mine is crap, the pillar bends when you drill anything harder than pine and the Morse taper holder is out by a few thousands so the Jacobs chuck wobbles, great for any shaped holes but round.

Looking forward to your results. I've looked at this brand for a few different tools and in the end have always opted for an alternative, purely based on the lack of info that is actually out there.
I can't imagine any major hurdles with this particular drill press, at the end of the day its a fairly basic function and as long as you are working with wood you shouldn't have an issue with power or longevity, so fingers crossed it all works out for you. My only question regarding it all would be is there a specific reason why you picked up a floor mounted drill press over a bench mounted one?

    • @RobinLewisMakes
      @RobinLewisMakes  7 лет назад

I went with the pedestal because so many reviews I read of people using benchtop presses said they wish they had gone floor standing. That said I've still not had any need for the extra length yet, so we'll see. The other big reason is that I'm in a rental, so I've got to plan my shop out carefully (no tools walls, etc). Having the drill press on the floor means I can wheel it around (I've put it on castors) and it doesn't take up my limited bench space.
I'm hoping this brand is ok. Someone mentioned that it's made in the same factory as Ozito, which doesn't fill me with confidence, but as a rookie with drill presses there's no point in me spending a grand and not making the most of it.
      Thanks for watching mate

Looks to have a Morse Taper 2 (MT2) arbor (the interference fit part you hammered into place) which is good as it offers plenty of options for mounting chucks and collets etc. Please avoid any cheap arbors, the Chinesium ones tend to be pretty poor, bad fitting, off center etc.
It wouldn't cost much to 'upgrade' to a keyless chuck on another arbor if you prefer not having to have a key to hand to change bits. Stick a strong magnet to the belt housing to keep your chuck key on for the meantime. Never be tempted to have it on a loop of string or whatever.
Now you have the fun of making an extension for the presses table - there's loads on youtube - to make it suitable for your needs.
Have fun with your new toy :)
