Absolutely agree! That was just ridiculous. Everyone that doesn’t have control on their dog, should have them on a leash. The dog doesn’t listen, clearly he needs a leash. I can’t grasp the non logic. They create a problem!
The script for this show had to be dramatized for the format. The issue must be laid out for every one to get it. It's taylored for a broad audience so they can place more ads.

Rule Number One: don´t get a dog you can´t physically handle. And I don´t mean to be unkind, but people get giant breed dogs and then act surprised that they become giant.
Huge surprise that a cocker spaniel originally bread for hunting and retrieving birds runs into the water to…well…hunt and retrieve birds! 🤔 I always love the owners saying "As soon as I let him off leash he does xy" - how about now letting him off leash then until he's trained? 😁
I've encountered the same thing with Yorkie owners, their precious widdle baby isn't so precious when it tears vermin up and the owners can't understand why their handbag dwelling baby would do such a thing!
People are funny, we just don't seem to know our limitations. Those dogs were bred for strenuous water rescue work, not to be house pets. Thank goodness, these two are typical sweet Newfies.
OMG LOL seriously, why does the couple let the spaniel off lead when it won't come back? They're lucky they still have a dog, the numpties 🙄 Teach it to retrieve- its a sporting dog. Knew exactly what the trainer was going to do.
Very unusual to have a Newfoundland act like that. Also the "jackapoo" is a border collie cross and needs to channel her activity level and herding instinct into some sort of activity like agility.
Serious question, are so many people lacking basic common sense? If your dog has a shite recall, why do you continually let them off-lead and expect them to come when called?
Right??! I would pay good money for just a few minutes in these people's minds while this is happening, to see what the hell they could possibly be thinking...like what is the train of thought that is getting them all the way to "yes, lets take the leash off my dog that won't come back to me!"🦧...come ON people!!
I don’t know why people cannot research and learn some basic training techniques BEFORE getting the dog? A bit like learning to drive before getting the car. have you tried LAT or BAT? Ie - engage and disenage games, so you train the dog that a certain word means a treat is coming, ie yes, and then when you are far enough from a dog that they've seen it but aren't fixated, you say 'yes' and then reward, and when they look back, repeat. eventually they'll start seeing the dog and then looking at you expecting the reward - once that happens, you move closer and repeat. you're essentially rewiring their initial response to seeing a dog. it helps if you are far enough away that you can have them on a longer line, as when they feel a tight leash, this makes the reaction worse.
What the person above said, especially the first paragraph. I've been doing that for about 6 months and my dogs made improvements. This method was on the advice of a dog trainer. However, I think the dog trainer was wrong in telling me that correcting the dog would not be effective. Recently I've started making corrections AS SOON as my dog starts to stiffen, stare, or lean towards. If I do it in the beginning of his reactive response he seems able to receive the message. When he looks away or towards me he gets a treat and praise. I also think it's important to use a strong, clear NOPE or UP-UP. Those are strong, short sounds that get his attention. Sometimes I'll snap my fingers to get him out of his fixation. It's also important to maintain some distance so you aren't setting him up for failure. Don't overwhelm him with dogs. Be consistent. I'm also think that while my dogs generally good and obedient on walks except for when he sees a dog, I'm going to keep a shorter lead so i can maintain control and be able to able to snap the lead or move into his space with a strong no if I need to. One way I also went wrong in the beginning was treating him when he was stiff or staring in an attempt to create a positive association with other dogs. I think that set me back because i thought of the problem purely in terms of creating a positive association and not communicating what i DO and DONT want (because that what the trainer told me). Tbh the dog trainer I saw was somewhat helpful but also misleading, omitting important details, or just plain wrong. I've made modifications to his technique.
