    It is with pleasure that I've been reading your camera reviews for many years, and to now hear your speaking voice, well, it's simply terrific. I'm sure others have commented on how great your voice actually sounds, and it does sound great, but let me say that your voice carries so much wisdom, experience, and intelligence. Your expertise, humor and refreshingly no nonsense approach to product review is truly unique and outstanding and matched by no one. It's a real pleasure to listen and learn from you. Ken Rockwell you’re absolutely right, don’t let your dreams be dreams, it is possible and it is within reach you just have to work hard and be smart about it, how do you take the leap to give yourself the belief to go for it? I had my eyes on the R5 but i could buy this 15-35mm + Used Eos RP for the price of an R5 and enjoy it, then sell it and keep the lens, and use it when the R5 goes on sale or the new R comes out. Definitely a luxury to buy a camera body the day it comes out. How does this apply to computers, i plan on using my computer for video editing my R5 in the future, I’m stuck on whether i should go for the 8 core or the 10 core, when the 10 core isn’t that much better than the 8 core for $450 more, but my dad said go for the 10 core so you don’t have to worry about it in the future. But I’m not using that power right now, and I’m sure the 8 core can edit the R5 footage, so I’m torn on which imac to pick for my investment because i want it to last, I’ve just never spent $5000 on a computer before, i want to make sure i made the right decision. But then again looking at your post i could always return it, if it doesn’t work out, or i could sell it and get something else in the future... really humbled by your belief in me, you’re right it doesn’t have to be a dream, your dream can be a reality. Love that mindset, really made my day thank you so much 😊 i think you’re right its better to buy new and use it, than used and it not do the job

      @@LouisLuzuka Cameras and computers only go down in value, like other perishable items like milk and cheese. Buy only what you can use in short order. Lenses hold their values; spend freely on them. By all means, an RP and 15-35 is a great way to go, far better than the same money spent on an R5 and poor lens, because the future resale values of the RP/15-35 are much higher than R5/junk lens combo. Core count isn't as important as lots of RAM in computers. My 2014 MacBook Air (1.5GHz 2-core) has to work hard, but still can edit 4K video. iMacs are not investments; they are computers and are expenditures, like buying dinner.

      Ken Rockwell wow, I’m humbled by that thank you for your perspective, I thought that by spending money on a computer I would be investing in the future career I want to do which is editing videos and making movies, but according to what you said, it’s an expenditure like buying dinner, I saw it as an investment because it will pay for itself, but from what I get at you’re saying to skip the imac and spend more money on ram? Spend money on a computer that has a lot of ram so like a used computer because they won’t lose value if you were to sell it again later when the new ones come out. This makes sense. How much TB SSD do you have on your MacBook Air? Or just getting external ssd would be better than paying for extra ssd in the computer. That makes more sense, it’s about being smart and frugal with your money rather than buying something that will lose value in a couple years, but what if I don’t plan on selling it? Does that justify buying an imac if I wanna make it my career , but then I saw that you shouldn’t make photography and I assume videography your career you should work a job and pay for the things you like because you love it, then that way if you make money then that’s great but you’re not risking it all to work so hard for 24k a year average, what would be a top investment, just lenses then? Thank you again appreciate you so much ❤️😭 definitely going to re-think some things, I mean I do have an iPad Pro if I get a keyboard and mouse then I would be able to edit some video, just need to get some storage for it externally but it’s possible. I think what you’re trying to say is focus on ideas and telling stories because no ones gonna ask how fast did he edit this on that computer 💻

    Thanks for the great review. I just bought some weeks ago the EF 16-35mm/4L for my Canon RP. The RF lens has almost triple the price, which was too expensive for me. And in wide angle shots, you seldom use 2.8 aperture, even though I thought possibly some of my shots could have turned out better when shot at 2.8 instead of 4. But on the other hand, my wallet is very happy, and much more happy with the EF lens ;-)
    (II'm new to Canon. I ordered my RP just when the R5 and R6 were announced and it became obvious that Canons mirrorless system will be perfect very soon. And for my needs, the RP is good enough, the price tag of the R6 is just too hefty for me)

    Great review! One question: did I understand that the outside of this lens is plastic, but the grip is also made of plastic or hard silicone rubber? I have some Nikon lenses that the rubber was so sticky that I had to change the grip. I even stopped using my Nikon D7000 because the grip was sticky and falling apart. I miss the Nikon D40 and D60 design because the exterior was pure plastic, with nothing to get sticky. Today I use the D3300, smaller, lighter and with little rubber, which until now has not been sticky. Thanks for another enlightening video!

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV 3 года назад +2

      Yes, just the grip of the focus ring is rubbery. One of the many reasons I don’t buy Nikon anymore is that too many of my old Nikon pieces have gotten sticky. I’ve had much better luck with Canon - but only time will tell. My EF lenses use much better grades of rubbery bands. Thanks!

    Very nice review, thank you I have the 16-35 f/4 IS and I’ve been debating if I need to upgrade to this one for the R5. The only thing I do not like about it is the larger filters it will require as I will need to buy a new set UV, CP, ND just for this lens. F/2.8 will be handy in dark churches n castles but then DOF will be shallower compared to F/4 so I’m going back n forth about this lens plus it will be heavier but I do like the 1 degree extra at the wide end for church ceilings. that’s were I stand/my thoughts at present. Since you have it is the resolving power of the f/4 for the 45MPd of the R5 or is there something to be gained in that department by going to the f/2.8?

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV 3 года назад +2

      Hi! They’re both about as sharp. Owning the superb 16-35 IS already you might want to ask yourself if a used or new 14/2.8 or 14/2.8 II www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/14mm-ii.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/14mm.htm would be a better addition rather than a 15-35 replacement. Neither 14 is as sharp at 2.8 as the 15-35, but it is wider and compact to use along with the 16-35. Ideally the 15-35 is magnificent. Thanks!

      Ken Rockwell Tnx I have a manual irix 15mm f/2.3 mainly for Milky Way so I’m good in that respect (no real need for a 14 prime and there are only so many lenses one can carry:-))) But I was wondering if the f/2.8 at 15 F/2.8 would be sufficiently sharp/DOF for things like church ceilings and other such dark interiors or if I would have to stp it down anyway to something closer to f/4 in which case it’s main advantage evaporated as I’m shooting such dark interiors at f/4 and they are plenty sharp/DOF.

    Discounting the maximum aperture and IS differences, how would you say the image quality and build quality of the Nikon 14-30 f4 compares to this? Are they similar or is this Canon in a different league? I'm currently using the Nikon D750 with the Nikon 18-35 for real estate and architecture and i'm looking to move to mirrorless soon, so these are two very important lenses for me.

      Canon is pro. Nikon 14-30 made in Thailand; consumer product and not as sharp or in any way comparable. Complete Nikon 14-30 review: www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/lenses/14-30mm.htm complete 15-35 review: www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/15-35mm-f28.htm it’s like comparing a Honda to a Maybach: they both get you there and have four wheels and run on gas, but that’s about it for what’s in common . Thanks!

      @@mdhazeldine really? Check his homepage he already posted a review of the lens. Do you think he has a copy? He is doing reviews based on spec sheets...Also read what he believes "S" stands for, the guy is completely sick, he is on a war against Nikon.

    You should use another type of cloth which does not leave particles on the lens, like the ones we use for cleaning sunglasses.

      Yes, but the detail revealed by the way i shoot this at such high magnification, exposure for dark detail and at such high magnification shows all sorts of things invisible to the naked eye. Thanks!

    Great video Ken, I did have some other questions on the RF 15-35mm and found the folk on Canon Live Chat at www.canon.co.uk/canonlive/live-chat/?
    to be really helpful, turns out the person I was chatting to was upgrading to this very lens themselves.

    Literally every lens reviewer on YT:
    *Gonna get an extreme close up of this lens without cleaning it first, yeah*

      The extreme resolution at which i shoot and the huge contrast of schmutz to deep black means it’s emphasized a lot. I do clean them, and this is what you get. I’m not going to stop and rotoscope-out all the dust just for youtube. I do have much cleaner studio shots at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/15-35mm-f28.htm Thanks!
