I remember hearing this a while back and thinking 'wow they've come a long way in so many ways' ... but then I couldn't find it for a while ... thank you for posting.
It's crazy how the closest they could get to perform at their dream venue was at the park right outside of it. If I was in their position, I would have probably given up even before I started. They dared to dream and now they've performed at Osaka Jo hall twice and if I'm not mistaken, they're going to have another live there early next year.
Z.O.N.E. was a JPop group/band that was active from 1999-2005. They were the original performers of "Secret Base" which SCANDAL covered. Like SCANDAL they were an ALL girl 4 piece band (2 guitars, bass, drums). However, ZONE started out as a typical singing/dance girl group. They later switched to a band that played their instruments along with singing and dancing. I was heartbroken when they disbanded until 2008 when SCANDAL blew me away during Japan Nite in Los Angeles.
Having read a few of the comments here, I think that the term 'looking at the world through rose coloured glasses' applies. Missed chords, out of key vocals, timing all over the place, basically terrible. However, this is just part of the process of evolution. We are fortunate to be able to see the girls at such an early stage of their now amazing careers. Loved it all the same as they were and are ...... Scandal!

i'm not upset i'm just saying it's not "terrible" just because it's rough. me (and a lot of other people) like it that way. And i am a musician, i can play all 3 chords.
They still do, just not all of them. Bitter Chocolate, August, Standard, Hikare, Want You, Emotion, Collapse of Love's Gestalt... to name a few. They generally write the lyrics for half an album.
Writing your own material doesn't mean you're overly proud or against playing different kinds of music. It's just, when I listen to Scandal, I'd like to hear Scandal, not them playing what some producer wrote up, even if it's good stuff.

They've even said they're annoyed that people have called them an idol group. They're a band, first and foremost, and this video can prove this, like you said. Haruna has even gone on to say that they're a band, not so much in the so-called 'band' sense, but one that can also dance.

Doesn't matter, I've been in many bands, it's hard to sound studio-quality live. So far it is refreshing, when compared to most japanese music. Peace Out
