If they searched the house without a warrant, any evidence obtained could and would be thrown out by the court. LEOs often do not know for certain who committed the crime until the investigation is underway or completed, so everything needs to be done with an eye to the legal process.

They may have done this and saw that no one was alive and immediately left the house to apply for a warrant.. This is happening everywhere.
