  • Master Storyteller Otis Jiry tells this tale of terror about a man who learns in his youth - from a teacher, no less - about an experience the teacher had when he himself was younger, outside of Broken Bow, Nebraska, where he had followed a trail into the woods and come across a building in the midst of a thicket of trees. When the teacher decides to investigate, mistakes are made, and he finds himself in the sub-level of the mysterious building after a fall. What the teacher, Mr. Mays, experienced down in the bowels of the old facility, which he refers to as "The Showers" because of the strange, leaking shower heads along its walls, is the stuff of nightmares. However, when the teacher's student grows up and comes across Mr. Mays again, Mays tells him about a piece of the story he left out in his original telling. The revision leaves out protagonist wanting more, and on a whim, he sets out with a friend to try and locate "The Showers." He eventually finds the place, but in retrospect, certainly wishes he hadn't.

nancegrl33 We appreciate the kind words for Otis. This was one we had in the queue for some time. We wanted to make sure we had Mr. Sindelar's permission; we were thrilled to finally get it.

Two men came upon the showers, cold and damp in morning hours
One man said "inside we go!" the other man said "oh, no. no. no."
So went one within the walls, to hear the echoes and the calls
Then shouting, raving, he did call out, "By god man let me out!"
All fell silent in the showers, cold and damp in morning hours
And one man crouched a whistling, as he chewed on gristling
Of the man who shouted out, "Please god let me out!"
For when you go to secret showers, in the cold damp morning hours
Go alone and not with friend, for friend shall fiend and then shall rend
while whistling a silly tune, a military song, over body hewn
For madness lies without not in, and trapped you'll be there within
And witness you, your own demise, in your friends maddened eyes.
In the showers cold and red, quiet now save for the dead.

I think I have about 500-something different stories in my playlist, many of them I'd consider to be good, but this? This is by far my favorite, and most of it I attribute to Mr. Jiry's spectacular reading.

This was a phenomenal story; well-written and spoken eloquently. I typically listen to this channel or CTFDN while I'm in bed getting ready to sleep. Today, I listened on my train ride home and was on the edge of my seat. I was listening so intently and I'm sure people were watching me wondering what on earth I was listening to. Thank you for bringing these stories to the public and putting your heart and soul into their narration. I am excited to commute with more of your stories in the future!

A question for curiosity's sake. Do you read these in one take or edit together different takes?
I can at the very least see taking a break between parts 1 and 2 being more than understandable.

    • @OtisJiryReads
      @OtisJiryReads  7 лет назад +2

Generally speaking, production takes place in one sitting, but there are many pickups where mistakes take place. You can count on approximately, 7 hours work for each hour of finished product you get to hear. Pre read, narration, editing for mistakes, mastering, then video production and upload. A LOT more work involved than most people realize.

Unrelated to the video itself but since my only real source of internets is an iPhone I don't have much choice but to comment to ask this - is there any playlist where I can find only the videos you did for the Chilling Tales channel? The playlist they have under your name includes stuff from this channel, and while I love them it makes it harder for me to find stories I haven't heard yet.

***** CTFDN has an "Otis Jiry" playlist, but I couldn't say when the last time it was updated was. You could always do a search for me on their channel and make your own list. :)

Best to stick to the other channels then, because this is an audiobook style channel where there is NO music or sfx used. You should stick to CTFDN if that is you style. I do work for them also, but this channel is meant for a different audience who look for stories like audiobooks are done.

Otis is an astoundingly talented narrator, and can create an atmosphere for a story using only his voice. His narration of 'The Russian Sleep Experiment' is one of the very best horror voiceovers I have ever had the pleasure of hearing, and there is no music or SFX in that version.
