  • The delectable combination of blend modes, effects, and the vector tile style editor in ArcGIS Online enables a shocking amount of cartographic license. Right in the browser.
I'll take a very plain and modern and basic (but lovely) set of basemap layers and turn them into something that plausibly looks like it was printed in the 18th century.
If you'd like to check out this map, it's called Georgian, and you can find it in Living Atlas, here: livingatlas.ar...
Check out some other social channels where I share how-to's and updates on random map adventures:

Very detailed workflow and explanation. Love the accidental discovery of order of effects. Thank you for sharing the map and layers.

This looks so good! You always find ways to create some of the most interesting maps using simple techniques. Jealous of that talent.

You are a map wiz and an inspiration! Could you create some videos on using various spatial analysis tools in ArcGIS Online?

Can you do a tutorial on exporting maps from ArcGIS online? I can never seem to export the area I need.

Is there a way to make changes/edits to the basemap in ArcGIS Pro rather than Online?

not that i know of. but developers.arcgis.com/vector-tile-style-editor/ does a really good job of exposing nearly everything i'd want to edit.

Hi, I love this map, is it possible to integrate it with After effects, geolayers-3 plug-in?

This is awesome, I’m trying to make a map of old railways for my Dad’s Christmas and this is exactly the style I’m after. However, I’m using ArcGIS pro and struggling to find the hue adjustment and bloom effect, any hints on how I can make it work?

Thanks! Unfortunately Pro does not have effects so it’s just an online basemap for now
