Confident people speaking strongly outside their expertise is a great danger.
My example is nuclear promoters without grid construction experience.
Nuclear electricity must have a very big grid. Grids are Frighteningly expensive to build.
The Australian nuclear promoters want to fill the existing national electric grid but we need to remove all fossil fuel with 10 times more electricity.
But 10 times more national grid capacity is Frighteningly ridiculous.
So 10 times more nuclear electricity is impossible.
But medical doctors, and earth engineers and nuclear chemists and ....... confidential speak about fossil fueled CO2 emissions worldwide.
The nuclear alternative will be so big that nuclear will be in the way.
      Unworkable and unaffordable.

Notes I’ve taken from this episode:
    1. Learn to speak with pauses to emphasize the words you’re saying. Pauses in sentences create suspense and lure your audience into what you’re about to say next.
    2. Speak with different volumes-it can be quiet or loud depending on the situation. This helps eliminate monotone and creates emotion.
    3. Most of us tend to speak at a volume of 3-4 out of 10. Try to bring that up to 5-6 and enunciate your words properly. The goal of speaking is for the other party to understand what you’re saying.
    4. Replace filler words like “uh,” “um,” and “like” with pauses. Learn to be comfortable with pauses within your talk.
    5. Use Grok or GPT to generate a 5-minute conversation starter. Video record yourself talking about the topic and watch it the next day-don’t watch it immediately after so you can stay neutral.
You’ll want to watch the video 3 times:
First time, just listen and notice how you talk-note down improvements you can make and work on them.
Second time, turn the volume off and watch how you talk to understand your visual representation.
Third time, run it through a transcription tool to identify your filler words and word choices.
Practice a lot! Your friends and family might judge you when you start changing how you talk. Practice with strangers-maybe at a gas station out of your way or with an Uber driver.
    6. It’s not a quick process. It takes the best students 3-6 months, but the result is blissful. Being able to communicate well is an unfair advantage.
    7. Don’t let your present dictate your future self. Give your future self a chance to be better. Be uncomfortable until you’re comfortable.

I love this podcast. I feel like I have learned so much just by listening to Vinh explaining the 5 things/steps to pay attention when we speak and the practical tool to tape and review our own conversation. I would love to send my niece/nephew to a training class like this so they can learn the valuable communication skills at a young age. The problem with our schools is they don't teach you on how to communicate. So those who "get it" at a young age, become popular and more liked. Those who "lack those skills" suffer from bullies and alienations from peers.

Belief in possibility -> then knowledge acquisition > practice/knowledge application -> the levelled up you. That's how we learn anything new in life. Notes on key takeaways
    🎤 The Biggest Public Speaking Mistake (00:00 - 05:00)
The #1 mistake? Monotone voice & lack of vocal variety → makes you forgettable.
People tune out if your voice has no emotion, no highs/lows, no contrast.
Your voice is an instrument-if you don’t “play” it, people won’t feel what you’re saying.
🔥 How to Instantly Improve Your Voice (05:00 - 10:00)
Volume: Go louder for impact, quieter for intensity.
Melody: Avoid a “flat” tone-add highs, lows, and rhythm.
Pauses: Create suspense & make key points land harder.
Rate of Speech: Slow down for clarity, speed up for excitement.
🎭 The Power of Emotion in Your Voice (10:00 - 15:00)
Your face controls your voice-moving your face adds emotion to your speech.
Facial expressions = vocal variety (happy face = happy tone, serious face = serious tone).
Most people “mute” their emotions, which makes them sound boring.
    📢 Why Some People Get Ignored (15:00 - 20:00)
Low volume & flat tone = people won’t take you seriously.
Confident people take their time-they pause, project, and control the room.
Shy speakers rush & speak too softly, making them seem unsure.
    🎭 Fixing a Boring Voice (Siren Technique) (20:00 - 25:00)
Exercise: Start speaking low, go high, then come back down → expands vocal range.
More vocal range = more engagement.
People remember speakers with dynamic voices.
    🔄 How to Change Your Speaking Style (It’s Just a Habit!) (25:00 - 30:00)
Your current voice is just a series of habits-it’s not your “natural” voice.
You copied your parents, teachers, and people around you as a kid.
Good news: You can retrain your voice in 3-6 months with practice.
    🚀 Speaking with Confidence (Even If You’re Introverted) (30:00 - 35:00)
Introverts are NOT doomed-confidence is a learned skill, not a personality trait.
Biggest mistake: Thinking “I’m just shy” → No, you’ve just practiced shy behaviors.
Solution: Train yourself to speak slightly louder, use bigger gestures, and pause more.
    🎤 How to Speak More Persuasively (35:00 - 40:00)
    Volume + pauses = authority.
Faster speech = energy, slower speech = importance.
More hand gestures = more presence (but don’t overdo it).
People perceive articulate speakers as smarter, even if they aren’t.
🎭 The “Brad Problem” (Why Loud, Confident People Get Ahead) (40:00 - 45:00)
Ever notice how the loud guy at work (Brad) always gets promoted?
That’s because people perceive confidence as competence.
Solution: Learn to speak clearly, project confidence, and control your vocal image.
🎙 Why Some Voices Sound Fake or Annoying (45:00 - 50:00)
Overly rehearsed voices sound inauthentic (real estate agents, news anchors).
Sing-song voices (repetitive up/down pitch) make people tune out.
Fix: Vary your voice naturally, avoid robotic or “salesy” speech patterns.
    🧠 The Science of a Memorable Voice (50:00 - 55:00)
People remember voices with melody & variety.
A monotonous voice = instant forgettability.
If multiple people talk at once, the one with more melody stands out.
🎭 How to Make People Feel Something When You Speak (55:00 - 1:00:00)
Your tone dictates emotion-people react more to how you say it than what you say.
Example: Simon Cowell’s “I don’t feel it” on talent shows = missing emotional tone.
Adding emotion makes your words resonate.
    🏆 The Secret to Great Storytelling (1:00:00 - 1:05:00)
Bad storytelling = just stating facts.
Good storytelling = reliving the moment (details, emotions, dialogue).
Formula: Hook → Struggle → Breakthrough → Application.
Use sensory details (sight, sound, touch, emotion) to bring stories to life.
⏸ The Power of Pauses in Speech (1:05:00 - 1:10:00)
Pauses = make emotions stronger (anger, sadness, excitement).
Good speakers pause after important points to let them sink in.
Nervous speakers rush & don’t let their words land.
🎧 How to Fix Your Speaking Habits (Record & Review Method) (1:10:00 - 1:15:00)
Record yourself speaking for 5 minutes (impromptu).
Listen back (without watching)-analyze vocal variety, speed, clarity.
Watch it muted-see posture, gestures, facial expressions.
Get a transcript-highlight filler words ("um, like, you know").
Pick one thing to improve per week (volume, pauses, rate, etc.).
    🎤 The “Record & Review” Method for Instant Improvement (1:15:00 - 1:20:00)
Step 1: Record yourself speaking for 5 minutes (impromptu, no script).
Step 2: Audio Review - Listen with the screen off. Analyze:
    Volume: Too quiet? Too loud?
    Melody: Too flat? Engaging enough?
    Rate: Rushing or dragging?
Step 3: Visual Review - Watch the video on mute. Notice:
    Posture & body language.
Hand gestures - Too stiff or too wild?
Facial expressions - Engaged or blank?
Step 4: Transcript Review - Read your words and highlight:
Filler words ("um, like, you know")
Rambling - Are your points clear and concise?
Step 5: Pick ONE thing to improve per week (rate, pauses, tone, etc.).
🚀 The #1 Trap: Overwhelming Yourself with Too Many Fixes (1:20:00 - 1:25:00)
Biggest mistake: Seeing 20 things wrong and trying to fix them all at once.
Solution: Focus on just one vocal element per week (rate, melody, pauses, gestures).
Example: If you speak too fast, slow down for a full week before moving on.
Tip: Kaizen approach → small, steady improvements over time lead to massive change.
🏆 Why “Brad” Always Gets Promoted (Even If He’s Less Skilled) (1:25:00 - 1:30:00)
It’s not always the smartest person who succeeds-it’s the best communicator.
The confident, well-spoken person gets noticed first in meetings & leadership roles.
Being good at your job isn’t enough-you must learn to present yourself well.
Solution: Work on vocal delivery as much as technical skills.
    📢 How to Project Confidence in Meetings & Conversations (1:30:00 - 1:35:00)
Confident people control the pace & volume of their voice.
Pausing after key points = more authority.
Low-energy speakers get ignored-add more variation & energy to keep attention.
Practice: Record a fake pitch or presentation and listen to how confident you sound.
🎭 The Secret to Holding Attention (Pauses & Emotional Contrast) (1:35:00 - 1:40:00)
People process information during pauses-rushing weakens your impact.
Emotion makes people listen-adjust tone to match your message.
Tip: Practice reading a dramatic script (movie monologues) to expand vocal range.
🔄 Why Most People Never Improve Their Speaking Skills (1:40:00 - 1:45:00)
They assume their voice is “just how it is” and never try to improve it.
    Voice & presence are learned behaviors-not a natural-born talent.
Your voice is an instrument-if you don’t practice, you’ll never master it.
Action Step: Play with rate, tone, pauses, gestures every day in casual conversations.
🎤 How to Own the Room with Your Voice (1:45:00 - 1:50:00)
Great speakers command attention with intentional vocal changes.
Tip: Lower your voice at the end of statements for authority (vs. uptalk).
Slow down & emphasize key words to make people hang onto your words.
Test: Try telling a story with dramatic pauses & energy shifts-see how people react.
🚀 Final Challenge: Change One Habit Today
✅ Pick one vocal habit to improve this week (volume, pace, melody, etc.).
✅ Practice in daily conversations-test reactions from people around you.
✅ Record & review yourself speaking-watch, listen, and adjust.
✅ Remember: Confident communication opens doors in every part of life.

Great convo! When Vinh talked about trying out a new voice on "neutral ears", I had to smile. I am a 72-year-old extreme introvert and tend to be reserved and rather serious. Then, a few weeks ago, I was invited to a party and decided to try on a new persona. A man I had not seen in a long time came up to me and asked how I was. Instead of saying, "I'm fine. How are you?", I smiled at him and said, "John, my dear, I'm absolutely fantastic! Thank you for asking. I hope life is treating you well." That led into a fun, playful conversation that set the tone for the rest of the evening. I was actually rather amazed how easy it was to become the person I chose to be.

I started improving the way I speak last 2021 and the rest is history, the moment we chose to change for the betterment of ourselves not to impress others but to gain confidence that is where the magic starts.Whoever is reading this, always believe in yourself then so believe that you can be whatever you will be. No one can control you, your composure is your weapon not to be controlled by anyone. Speaking yourself will always be misunderstood but just continue to be you and continue to be kind. The universe will soon be all in your favor.

I'm trying to improve in fluency (different than just public speaking, it's the mechanics of speech that "normal" people don't even think about) and my overall communication skills. Most people don't understand that to a person who stutters, something as simple as telling someone your name can be an extreme emotional roller-coaster, filled with shame, self loathing, anger, and more. (God forbid you get asked to repeat yourself 😂😂) Learning more techniques like are taught in this podcast slowly help me have more fluent days and confidence in speech. @ Fair enough. I believe it’s not easy communicating in general, whether you’re neurodivergent or not, metaphors can be construed different ways. I’ll bet op was not trying to be insensitive.

I'm so pleased to see Vinh on this podcast. The voice is such a powerful and essential tool for life and business success, but often gets overlooked.

Confidence is a feeling not a set of behaviours. Acting confident vs feeling confident are two very different things. One is based on having a facade and the other is based on a genuine soul based emotional change that a person undergoes where they automatically feel confident vs putting on an act.

Wanted to say exactly this. I appreciate the craft, but I find it a bit dangerous to confuse appearing confident with being confident.
      Authenticity is underrated.

@@avo5499 Its sth like fake it till u make it. Acting confident vs feeling confident are all a simple thing about belief. If u believe u can will and must be confident, then your mind follows that drive. At first it will false, a lie and a rationalization. However over time this act will solidify into a habit until u one day feel confident. Confidence usually brings positive results. These results solidify the habit until it becomes "you".
It is possible but very difficult.

I am blown away by how inspired I feel by Vinh, and his story touches me on such a personal level. I’m a 40 year old recently diagnosed autistic woman who grew up in Adelaide with a traumatized Vietnamese father, who for a while became a monk. Unfortunately his story is a tragic one, but I feel as though I have the power to turn my life around, I so desperately need this help. Thank you guys for this.

This video is so authentic, touching, educational, really deep and also entertaining - perhaps my favourite episode of The Diary Of The CEO!
Thank you, Steve and Vinh! ❤

I used to speak monotone, deep and slow. When I got to college I got to listen to some really good lecturers. A lot of them were bad, but a few were great communicators. I started naturally emulating them I think without ever realizing I was doing it. Through the years I’ve kept picking up different things from different people and 20 years later my communication and confidence level makes me content and comfortable in most situations.
I used to have to repeat myself often at work when I was younger. When I learned to speak better, I started being seen as a leader. It’s not just what you say, it’s also how you say it.
