Ever since you introduced us to Joseph Duclos, i have not been able to stop thinking about their bags! If I ever find myself in Paris, I'm making a bee line to their boutique.
Beautiful bags, esp the Joseph Duclos, absolutely classic style. I don't buy luxury (not affordable for me), but your analysis of what constitutes quality is none the less enormously helpful for me in analysing what's the best I can afford.
I have the Duclos messenger bag. It is worth ever penny. The bag underwent quality control before shipping and was in perfect condition upon arrival. Now mind you this was during the Parisian trash strike. Amazing.
I have a Flori and a Diane messenger. For me, the Diane feels more special. Every time I look at it, it still takes my breath away. Although it's more casual than the top handle versions, it's still very elegant. The Flori, on the other hand, I feel super comfortable carrying around every day. It's a beautiful bag in person and feels very high quality, but doesn't look out of place with jeans, going on public transport and running around town. You can also wear the Diane messenger that way, but for me, I'm taking care of the hardware and only really wearing it when I go to an event, get a taxi there and so on. I also love the Lingot, but haven't bitten the bullet and got one yet because I'm not sure I need one with the other options I have. I'll definitely consider it though, or perhaps a vintage Moynat. Honestly, if I could have them all, I would. But I am not just going for a collection that I love, I really want to use the bags I have regularly so I'm trying to avoid having too many of a similar size.
Your comment made me smile from start to finish! Hear, hear may you continue to enjoy your bags in good health and may you also continue to curate a considered and elegant collection.
I literally danced when I saw a new video from you, especially one discussing both Delvaux and Joseph Duclos! I recently purchased the Diane clutch, and I am absolutely in love. I also got the Brillant from Delvaux, and I am smitten. Thanks for another great video. This may seem like a silly question, but can you explain more about what patina actually looks like, especially for black leather. I’ve seen photos online for tan and brown leather, but patina on black leather seems hard to come by.
Good to hear. Two fab handbags! Not at all, regardless of the colour when a bag patinas it darkens colourwise and develops a gentle sheen. How well that happens depends entirely on the quality of the leather, that is where Joseph Duclos truly shines because of the superb quality of the leathers they use coupled with the fact that they only semi vegetable tan their leathers which ensures they don't strip the natural oils out of the bag which are important in developing the patina.
Hi Anesu! I am catching up on your videos as I just returned from Paris. Apologies in advance for this long message - but I have to share my experiences! Learning much from you in the last year, top of my list were Moreau, Moynat, Joseph Duclos, Delvaux, and Valextra. These are mostly brands I can't access in store in the US. I was dying to see the Diane, the Brillant, and the Iside! I walked into Joseph Duclos on a weekday morning and I was treated like royalty. I was the only customer in there at the time, but both of the associates were absolutely wonderful, seemingly very genuine too. They told me that Brigitte Macron was recently shopping in the boutique and commented on her multiple purchases. They walked me through the store and spoke about things as if I was getting a museum tour. This was by far my best experience with a luxury store in Paris. They were also interested in my knowledge of the brand, being an American, and I referred to you 🙂 You are absolutely right that the Diane stands out, head and shoulders above anything else I saw. Previously, I thought that the hardware might be a might too much for my minimalist taste, but WOW - this bag is stunning in every way. It is now at the top of my list, when my budget will allow for another extravagant purchase. My experience in both Moynat and Moreau ended up being more limited, although still positive, but those were stores I mostly wanted to see for the sake of seeing, with no specific bag on my wish list. I also loved seeing the regal Tempete and Brillant in Delvaux. The associate was very friendly and helpful there as well. I must say that my travel partner, having heard my stories about the quality and craftsmanship of these brands, pointed out to me a big flaw in stitching on one Brillant that was on display. He is not interested in handbags, so it would've had to be, and was, quite obvious! I ended up in Printemps/Galeries Lafayette for Valextra as I couldn't find a standalone store. I purchased a medium black Iside in Printemps, got it back to the hotel, and it turned out they had given me the navy version (taken from the back, I suppose an honest mistake). However, it also had some white markings on it. I brought it back, and they gave me a black version, which I inspected. However, upon checking again post purchase in natural lighting, saw more of the same white markings. So, another trip back. They were quite sheepish and didn't question me at all. I said, I wouldn't think this should look as such, and the store manager was quick to agree. I wonder if it has something to do with how the leather is treated? However, they had run out of black Iside bags to show me (without flaws), so they told me to go to another store to pick up a replacement (which turned out to be a 5 minute walk away - from Printemps to GL). While the situation was handled with kindness, obviously not ideal and I thought they should've offered to go pick up the bag for me. I do very much love my new Iside, however. My strangest experience was in Celine stores. I was set on getting the medium soft 16 bag and did purchase it in the end... but the interactions felt odd. An SA strongly pushed the Conti at me after I straight out told him that I was going to purchase the 16. None of the boutiques had the medium 16 in black, which also seemed bizarre. They told me there was only one in France, at Galeries Lafayette. Also, absolutely no Phoebe Philo bags on display at all in standalone boutiques! Wrapping up... it was great fun and quite informative 🛍🧐
Hello Abby! Ooh my you have been busy travelling and having fun. I’m jealous. Joseph Duclos and Moynat are like A star students who are top performers and never misbehave! I can always trust on them. Here is to a future Diane bag purchase for you. It made my week last week when I saw Brigitte Macron carrying the Diane clutch. Such a fab endorsement and she looked chic. Brilliant has always been consistent up until now. Minor hiccups here and there but nothing major. Next time if you see anything off and if you get the opportunity please take a picture and email it to me as it will make it easier to get to the bottom of anything. Valextra left me gobsmacked. Brands will always get a bag transferred to you or your most convenient store what they did to you was inexcusable - I’m sorry. I wonder what the marks are? Again please take pictures next time. Celine is slightly different being owned by LVMH it’s a bigger beast and they have targets to meet I get what they were trying to do to you is sneaky because most people don’t realise the ulterior motive. The 16 is way more popular than the conti which they still have supplies of and are trying to minimise on stock going on sale and in turn impacting profits so they push you to buy it because they don’t have ready stock of the 16! Vicious cycle! Luxury is a minefield! Thank you for keeping me in the loop but most of all having confidence in my recommendations. May you continue to enjoy your purchases in good health!
Excellent comment - thank you for sharing your experience! I am sitting in the US and considering ordering a number of the purses you mentioned online but perhaps I will wait until I am well enough to travel and see them for myself ... the exception to that being Joseph Duclos! That one may just have to come by mail ... at least the first one! :)
Hi Anesu, I am catching up with the latest videos. Thank you again for such excellent video, I love all your selections. Excellent analysis of these bags!
Thank you for watching. I don't know the brand as it's not in my home country but I'll try and take a look at it next time I'm in Italy if it's widely available.
Another amazing video! What are your thoughts on Susan Szatmáry? I notice that the Swedish Monarchy has been using them and have been looking for material / info on them ever since.
Can you discuss the care of boxed calfskin to develop the patina you reference so often? I have a Moreau Faubourg 49 in black Baranil but I’m afraid to carry it for fear of ruining it. I bought it to be an everyday bag and the SA assured me it was designed for casual daily wear. I love it and would like to use it without fear!
Very informative video! I'm a delvaux girlie through and through and the lingot is my most versatile bag! It works for every occuation ( dressed up or dressed down). That said, i have been eyeing the joseph duclos diane top handle bag in l20 ( as the marron glaze color i ❤ is in that size). Is there a large size difderence between l20 diane and the pm lingot?
Hi Anesu, I am interested to know why you think that Joseph Duclose is setting a standard for quality (even more so than Hermes) considering they opened in 2021 and their products have not passed the test of time nor wear and tear like others have. We certainly have not seen a vintage Diane bag that is 30+ years old that still looks immaculate. How can one be certain that the metal details won’t get scratched easily or detach from the leather completely over time? I do understand this is a very old brand name but that’s just it, the current owner has purchased only the name and has no other connection to the old 1754 family business that JD was. They are relying on that name to justify their prices and create a sense of quality, luxury, and timeliness but is it truly? After all, they are merely a toddler. Thanks 😊
Hi Tatjana, great question and a very easy and pleasurable one for me to answer! If I may, I’ll be in France later this year but I’m still finalising the dates after the summer holiday, answer after my trip as I would like a few exhibits I currently don’t have access to. Please bare with me.
You sure are a fan of the Lingot! I was never a fan of it until you reviewed it. But I will probably never buy one for the simple reason I am not a shoulder bag person. Give me a handbag every day.
