- Ian Russell is a three-time British Carp Angling Championship finalist and former winner of Total Carp’s Battlecarp and Fishing TV's Carp Wars.
As one of carp fishing's best-loved personalities, he became prominent in the UK carp fishing scene as the proprietor of bait rolling company, Heathrow Baits Services. Ian has also written for multiple carp fishing publications and has made numerous TV appearances.
Back in 1996, he caught one of England's most exclusive and revered carp, Summerleaze's Big Fully, a rare and uncommon capture that subsequently propelled his carp fishing profile.
Ian is equally at home fishing crowded day ticket venues, as he is angling on low stocked syndicate lakes. His participation in the British Carp Angling Championships and similar events has exploited his tactical awareness, making him a formidable contender on the competitive scene.
Ian's carp fishing life has been varied and extensive. During this episode of the podcast, he discusses many of his fondest angling memories, as well as lifting the lid on some of his most significant fishing edges.

What a top guy, grounded, no ego, fished everywhere and caught from everywhere. Brilliant stuff
Knew this would be a great listen. On the few occasions that I’ve met Ian he’s always been a top bloke, very approachable, zero ego, im not surprised he’s managed to have a career in angling for so long, what shop owner wouldn’t like Mr Russell calling in for a brew and entertaining his customers. As much as I enjoy all the podcasts from the younger carp anglers, you can’t beat the ones from the guys who have been there and done it years ago. Maybe it’s my age, but I want to hear about all the heritage waters from years ago, when I was just getting into carp fishing. There’s a few names he mentioned there that would make good podcast guests. Geoff Bowers would be a brilliant listen, as would Albert Romp if you had a swear filter. Dougal would be er, interesting. Kerry Barringer, Kenny Dorset, get more of these guys on that made carp fishing what it is today. Top podcast, thanks Ian.
Love Ian , Korda smashing the podcasts
What a fantastic interview. Ian is a good bloke ,so knowledgeable but so grounded.
Always worth listening to.
We need more carpers like Ian.
No way Ian Russell, What a lovely bloke met him at the northern show a few years back nicest bloke i'd spoke to all day.
I met him at the northern show it was like he was an old friend I started to wonder whether we had met before
I had a 10-15 min chat with him at about 6 in the morning while in the line for the bog at orchid lakes last year he was mint as👌🏻 genuinely happy to have a chin wag 👍🏻
Ian the legend brilliant podcast lads loved it what a guy Simon take his offer and go fishing with him you won't regret it buddy 👍🏻 👍🏻
Another brilliant pod cast guys , Ian is a class act and a gent would like to see him back on in the future, talking about more great memories from the past 👌🤞
Love Ian he has time for everyone and he’s such a top man.
Another great listen 👌🏻👍🏻, credit due it’s nice to see/listen to these podcast from anglers who are not Korda sponsored not that there’s anything wrong with Korda just nice to just watch/listen to stories without any mass promoting 👍🏻.
A great listen and insight into another anglers angling over the times, brilliant
The man that is Ian Russell what a legend. One of the nicest people in are sport. He gave me so much advice for fishing bedfont and bushy park. Using the mega Indian spice and the stench . And them raspberry ripple pop up's dangerous. Massive big up ian one love cj 🎣🎣🎣
2hrs of pure magic right up there next to the Mickey Gray one for best TTPC. Lovely man and one of the most modest and humble chaps out there. He’s very generous with his information too, Years ago I asked him a question relating to a shallow silty estate lake I was fishing and he suggested I try soaking bottom baits in sunflower oil. It Worked a bloody treat for me.
Fantastic pod cast, Ian Russell is a top bloke and all round nice guy. I hope to one day enjoy a tutorial with him....tights lines guys , thank you once again. Awesome content.
Ian Russell seems to be a truly nice guy with a humongous amount of carpy knowledge, definitely up there with Julian Cundiff, Awesome!
What a listen! Ian always a pleasure to watch/listen too! Would love to fish with him could learn a lifetime in one day 💪🏽
If I was going to do a tutorial, It would have to be Ian. Legendary angler, in my top 3 of all time. Korda has Ian Russell and Nash has some guy from Towie, enough said. Great work Simon.
Simon I love the podcast, you know. But I think Toby, you know, should have a go hosting, you know
Very entertaining Podcast. Ian seems like a very genuine and nice guy.
Awesome carper thanks Ian and Team Korda and Happy New Year
The lake with Ali was chigborough
Good interview . Check out the new frank Warwick one from carpology, that's really good .
Remember the ad with those Summerleaze mirrors and Shoulders from Horton. 4 takes, 3 forties, 1 hook. Gardner Talon Tips. One of the best hook patterns I’ve ever used. Went to the Heathrow Baits unit to get some tutti’s and some leads from Atomic next door. Good on him for making a living doing something he loves.
Never really been a fan of the pod casts...don’t really get it, but Ian is a top angler and I could listen all day long
Great watch guys as always could listen too ian all day 👊👊
Caught some of my biggest fish on Heathrow baits years ago was gutted ☹️ to find out he’d sold the company. As I only got back into finishing this year. Great bloke Ian 👍🏻
I think the mystery of carp fishing is long gone ....its now a business
It's still there if you get out and look for it...
Enjoyed that immensely ian Russell 👍
Top angler and man i have the pleasure to fish Rk leisures Horton complex and the man's a legend on there 💪👊

Korda longshank
What your problem with Jim Shelly????
Think you should get him on he’s a sound guy full of stories and massive carp but there is no way you would ever ask him.
Great to see you here bud
good podcast enjoyed this one glad you brought up the bucket rule completely unfair also I’ve noticed at a lot of my memberships this year that a lot of bailiffs are swim swapping with there mates which means everyone who pays money never gets a look in totally un fair considering we all pay the same money should be first come first serve tight lines all 🎣
This one didn't feel that long?? I guess when you get engrossed in something time flies! Lovely fella, nice to see him in this environment, I hope I bump into him on the bank one day!
Mate Ian on oxlease , top bloke 👍
HBS stupa stench - loved em
One of my favourite pukka video 📹
Top man Ian 🙌🙌
Deffo a man id like to meet in my life one of ya own ......
The anglers you have on these podcasts are by far the best anglers to grace this generation, but please get MATT HAYES involved, I’m pretty sure he could tell more carpy story’s than many on this planet, it’s a shame you missed out on getting one with John Wilson... a very iconic carp figure of the 90s, rip John you were the reason for my love of fishing
Me and my Dad fish with Mick brown once or twice a year he and matt hayes were my absolute favourites growing up! would love to see 2/3 hours of Matt hayes on here
Yes! Matt Hayes is a must. Don't think there's a angler on the planet that hasn't watched matt Hayes.
I remember using three stench from HBS banging bait at the time
