Hey I like the video and deck but straight up the message at the end was really cool and unexpected and for that reason alone this has been my favorite video so far. Not counting the fact that mill is by far favorite deck type in magic. Any way great job with the ending message I’d like to see you do more messages like that in future videos.
Hey man, great message there at the end. I feel your pain, as dementia has affected my family too. Sadly, living in Washington, I can’t make it out to Minnesota, but I will be looking to donate something with my next paycheck. As always, great deck tech 👍🏻 It’s unrelated to this vid, but I actually bought your version of Pheldagryf for my buddy for Christmas last year, and playing against that deck is the most fun I ever have with this game. Keep up the great work!
As a new, still learning player, I’m so so appreciative that you’re putting the upgrades in with their replacements now, as even though it’s situational, it still helps me see the connection and learn how to make my own upgrades in the future. Love this channel!
This one speaks to me, Phenax was the first commander I built from scratch and I used a lot of these same cards; it is a pretty powerful deck. I would also recommend some pillowfort cards to keep people from ganging up on you which they usually do after you defeat one person in the same way infect does. My family has several members with Alzheimers too I appreciate you bringing that up at the end of the video it is a terrible disease and anyone else who donates to the association thank you.
I guessed the Golden Pig! I made a VERY similar 40 card deck on my own way back when I first started playing MTG. I was so excited when I saw you highlight so many cards I own and cobbled together.
You've saved me so much money in this game with the cheap alternatives you use in these deck techs, i built a deck based on your kambal deck and i found having resplendent mentor and famished paladin improved it massively and that was an £1.50 2 card infinite life combo, thanks for the great ideas! Keep up the great work :)
All the respect and appreciation for the work you do and the compassion you've shown at the end of this video. Such a positive force for good no matter how small can have widely reaching effects. Stay strong, stay hopeful ❤
This, like all of the Commanders Quarters deck techs is absolutely excellent. I hope everyone donates to this great cause. I’m so happy that you use your platform this way!

My father hiked the Appalachian Trail last year raising over ten thousand dollars for Alzheimer's research because his mother and my grandmother is currently suffering from it. I really appreciated hearing this kind of message at the end of the video. (My father: Art Donovan)
Great deck review and great message. Both my grandmothers have passed from dementia and having to watch that happen over years is the worst thing known to man. I give you so much respect for being part of this cause. Thank you. Also, no Archive Trap? In commander, everyone needs to crack a land at some point haha.
A few budget cards I think are worth consideration: Pain Seer, Fallowsage, Sphinx's Disciple - These basically draw you cards for free with Phenax's ability, and they're especially good with untap effects. King Macar, the Gold-Cursed, Arbiter of the Ideal - Likewise, these guys have crazy effects you can trigger every turn without any risk, and they both cost like 25 cents. Freed from the Real - Throwing this on one of your Lhurgoyfs can basically win you the game right out. Also really good for triggering any of the above dudes multiple times a turn. Horseshoe Crab, Soliton - Likewise, either of these guys has "U: Mill 3 or 4" by default, and they get even better if you slap a Bonehoard on them. Or a Slagwurm Armor. Great mana sinks. Slagwurm Armor - +6 toughness is a lot! Profane Memento - A lot of cards are going to be going into your opponents' graveyards, so this'll gain you a bunch of life. Great for survivability, or for just untapping Phyrexian Colossus a lot. Phyrexian Colossus: 8 life is a lot, but it's free untaps! Diluvian Primordial, Sepulchral Primordial - Slightly pricier at like $2-3, but all of your mill means you've got a great chance at snagging multiple good spells/creatures with these for free.
The Commander’s Quarters Surprised you didn’t use the Duskmantle Guildmage infinite combo You activate the guild mages first ability then do one damage to a player while Mindcrank is on the field, the two affects loop on each other and leads to infinite damage and infinite mill

Duskmantle Guildmage, Mesmeric Orb, Necrotic Ooze, Tree of Perdition, and Undead Alchemist are all very useful. And of course, Pili-Pala and Grand Architect are pretty much an instant win. Even if you get them out before Phenax, you can use infinite mana to cast him, also using that mana to untap pili pala every time you tap him to mill your opponent. Sands of Time is great as well.
I just pulled this commander the other day when a bought some theros packs on a lark. I was watching a bunch of your videos yesterday and was going to message you to put a bug in your ear a out this card. I'm definitely picking up these cards.
Oh excuse me? I have most of these cards including the commander? Even things like Demonic Tutor? Might have to make this deck. Solid build, solid message. Im subbed.

Thank you for this video. This was the first edh deck I ever made. Nice to see your version on it! Avatar of Woe and Nemesis of Reason is a nice body to use with Phenax's ability.
@@TheCommandersQuarters Yeah, gotta say I loved your version. I've built mine a while ago, so I didn't know cards like Fraying Sanity, which should definitly go into my version! You went to a more focused on mill strategy, whereas I went to a more of a profiting from milling one. One nice combo that I could mention is Junktroller/Reito Lantern + Tunnel Vision. That is a nasty one to pull! In any case, here's my list, should you want to take a look at it. Keep up the good work, sir! tappedout.net/mtg-decks/i-am-god-3/
Can confirm deck is absolutely fantastic and my favorite of the four I've built from this channel. Will suggest Scheming Symmetry as a reasonable upgrade, replacing Razaketh's Rite- having another player be able to put a card on the top of their library grants them no advantage when you can mill off that card immediately or almost immediately. (And if you're in multiplayer, you can use it to do favors for the people whose graveyards you're not filling at the moment). Also, Drown in the Loch, replacing Negate, because you're gonna be able to use it to counter anything incoming or nuke anything already out once you get going.
Mitch, If I was as good as you at creating quality MTG decks, people would say, hey look! There goes the guy who is as good as Mitch at creating quality MTG decks. Keep it going!
It’d be cool to see The Command Zone do a Game Knights episode that is budget themed with Commander’s Quarters would be interesting to see what other people can come up with.
Some suggestions for budget cards Crashing drawbridge: a common artifact from eldraine. Costs 2 and taps to give all creatures haste. Cheaper then greaves/boots or spells in both cmc and cost. If your splashing green with a sultai deck, i highly recommend tower defense, it gives all creatures +1/+5 which is always good when your playing a deck where the creatures toughness matters more If your not splashing green, cards light wight of the 6th precinct or even shade effects work very well Cards like carrion feeder and carrion beetle can also work well if your splashing tokens. Edrik saur is a good source for bodies and ashnods alter is one of the best sac outlets tho they will cost a little bit more
Mitch, my Mom passed away in 2011 from this horrible disease and I know that if I was ever granted one wish it wouldn't be for riches, it would be for the ridding of this horrible disease from this world so that No One or No Family would ever again have to suffer what my Dad, my family, and myself suffered. God bless you and yours.
Dude I love these videos! I have taken so many suggestions and discovered a lot of cards I may not have otherwise seen. Thanks for putting so much effort into these videos. I built a pretty sweet Vannifar deck combining what I learned from your deck tech, personal upgrades and themanasource’s video. Keep up the good work!
One of my friends has been holding a Phenax to trade with me, since he knows I want to build a deck around him. It may be time to trade for it. Everyone always says that Mill in EDH isn't good. And while they may be right, it is still a bunch of fun to build around that theme. Unfortunately, I haven't exactly had the time to build around it, due to being challenged to build a Nath of the Guilt-Leaf deck. So having a budget option to play around with mill is great! All of that being said, instead of spending $25 on this deck, I'll use that, plus a bit more, to donate to Young Champions. My great-grandmother had Alzheimer's. She would say and ask the same things over and over again during a conversation because of how fast she would forget about all of it. Words don't really describe how hard it is to see a family member go through that. I only wish I could give more, or attend the event. I would love to know how that goes.
Glad you enjoyed the deck tech and yeah it might not be the best strategy, but it definitely a fun one! You are the best! That is far too kind of you! I am sorry to hear that this terrible disease has affected your family as well. You are doing more than enough, and thank you again!
@@TheCommandersQuartersWhile playing optimal strategies can be fun in itself, there's also fun in running decks that you never see at a table. I think that fun and wonky is the essence of Commander. And no need to thank me. If anything, I should be thanking you. Not only for bringing awareness to Alzheimer, but your videos as well. My friends and I have made decks based on some of the videos you have put out, and it has been a lot of fun. We have had Phelddagrif win games because he made friends and let everyone have fun. I personally had one of my funniest games with a Trostani Discordant based on your video. Your videos have brought some of the fun and wonkines that I love back into my playgroup.
A Phenax mill deck ! You did it ! (I'm so glad). It's my favourite edh deck and with this video I will tweak it a bit. However I think that an almost wall only strategy is not good because if you get overwhelmed once you can resign. Some anti aggro cards like propaganda or silent arbiter could help (I know they are not really cheap). Eventually I'm hoping that Young Champions will earn a lot of money. !
Fleet swallower and stolen identity would also be a great additions in the style deck as upgraded cards since fleet swallower when it attacks mills half rounded up each time, and with stolen identity you can have two great targets for making a copy of with either consuming abiration or fleet swallower
Bloodchief Ascension would be a solid pick to put in here! Potential infinite off of Mindcrank and life gain off of your main strategy too! And with the amount of damage other players will be giving to each other it'll gain those counters quite quickly and is an ok turn one if you don't have a dark rit or a Sol ring
I am still blown away by how good these decks are, I just recently ordered the Izoni, Thousand-eyed and Yargle, Glutton of Urborg. The commander I want to see the most is Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord. I wonder how a mix of a Voltron strategy and aristocrat effects would work for him
Excellent video as usual, Mitch! I remember around the time Phenax came out, I had a Defender-themed mill deck in blue and green, with Axebane Guardian and Doorkeeper. I just had a fun idea for a deck tech! I’m not the best brewer, and I’m busy, but maybe you can have fun with this idea! It’s a Rakdos, Lord of Riots deck utilizing pingers like Goblin Fireslinger on the low end of the curve to cast Rakdos and ramp out big boys like...I dunno yet, but maybe Eldrazi would be cool?
Turning such an awesome video into an even greater message is really cool. Firstly, I'd love to donate, and also I had no idea you lived in MN! Hopefully I'm able to attend, it seems like a great cause.
Kudos to you sir for raising awareness! Also, being that it's a super cheap card, I'm surprised we didn't see Charix, the Raging Isle on this list. Mill out 17 every time you tap it🤘😆
I love your deck techs! I've built 2 decks aleady with your guides, one for my son and one for wifey! Might I request a Bruna, Light of Alabaster deck next?!? Thank you so much!
I personally would include a duskmantle guildmage instead of the jesters cap to deal with people that shuffle their graveyard into their libraries. I found it to be more reliable. It also combos with mindcrank
Really cool deck! Mill strategies are one of my most favorite tactics. Right now my mill commander is Ambassador Laquatus, it's pretty dependant on getting an infinite mana combo to win, but is otherwise pretty decent
I really like all the theros gods but phenax is one of the more powerful ones but I would really like to see kruphix as he is one of my favorite commanders also this deck seems really good.
My grandmother is also suffering from Alzheimer's. The personality change is very difficult because you watch the person you love disappear even though their body still walks.
What swaps would you make for ELD? I like Merfolk Secret Keeper, Overwhelmed Apprentice, Didn't Say Please, Corridor Monitor, and maybe Drown in the Loch.
I made s phenax eldrazi deck that dealt with getting rid of my opponents library any way possible, wether it was through mill or ingest, and my favorite cards for the deck were consuming aberration and mirko vosk, The Blood drinker
When War of the Spark comes out, you should make a self-mill deck. Between Laboratory Maniac and Jace, there are 2 win conditions. I'm curious what commander you would choose to use for it and the colors you feel are needed.
Shield sphere reasonable upgrade. 0 mana for a 0/6 with the only downside if you use it to block things which you don't. Semi-reasonable upgrade intruder alarm. It costs a bit but man what a winning card.
Duskmantle Guildmage can help end the game much faster with its first ability in this deck and since Mindcrank is already in here, it can even immediately kill someone for 3 mana. Definitely worth considering for how inexpensive it is.
I think Jester's Cap or cards like that are a MUST for Mill decks or else it wont work. If you're thinking of building this, you need a card like that. And that last message is real talk. The problem is real and I hope people can help donate for this cause. You will get some of it when I get my next paycheck.
one thing to keep in mind is that because of Zendikar Rising, any budget Phenax deck should probably be running Charix, the Raging Isle ($.25), Maddening Cacophony ($1.15), and Ruin Crab ($1.15).
I cant attend, nor can i donate, but my family is. I lost my great aunt to alzheimers, and know how rough it can be to experience it. Stay strong, keep on hoping, and just stay on the great and amazing path you are on. I hope you have a fantastic day :)
**Karn's Temporal Warning**
Iy can only be cast if you have a legendary creature or planeswalker. So Phenax must be in creature form at the time.
A great thing to keep in mind!
Yeah, but phenax is quite difficult to destroy... which makes it easier to have said legendary.
@@OodustwindoO
Depends on your group. Many regular metas play exile effects for Enchantments and Creatures because the gods gained momentum
I have multiple legendaries in my deck, mainly jace, ingenious mind-mage for another round of mill and jin - gitaxius for the control and discarding

Clark Milstead have you seen the modern mono blue mill deck from MtgAids RUclips channel
Chad Griffith yes I’m glad some people know how to play magic but I prefer donor or esper mill myself
Jesse Jones true also if you couple him with laboratory maniac you could have a more consistent outcome
Throw in Wrexial the risen deep. You can cast so much b.s. from peoples yards. You're milling em anyway so may as well use it.

Nemesis would be really good in a Phenax deck with vigilance or a way to untap it after combat.
Oh my! A Phenax deck! I've got one of those! Let's see if our ideas match - I'm typing this as the video is being played.
Nice!

@@RaginKavu Ooooh nice! I like this direction!
@@TheCommandersQuarters Good to hear you liked it! Feel free to use any of my cards/synergies in an eventual future break the bank episode of it!
Me too! I have an immense love of mill and I clicked on this video for that reason.
Well thanks!
Love the deck! Phenax was my first commander deck i ever built so he will always hold a special place in my heart lol
It’d be cool to see The Command Zone do a Game Knights episode that is budget themed with Commander’s Quarters would be interesting to see what other people can come up with.
Would be fun to watch!
Yeah I’m interested in how everyone would build their decks you included would be cool.
They would never do it. Josh already said he thinks the mill in commander is way too under powered. Prove him wrong everyone
Some suggestions for budget cards
Crashing drawbridge: a common artifact from eldraine. Costs 2 and taps to give all creatures haste. Cheaper then greaves/boots or spells in both cmc and cost.
If your splashing green with a sultai deck, i highly recommend tower defense, it gives all creatures +1/+5 which is always good when your playing a deck where the creatures toughness matters more
If your not splashing green, cards light wight of the 6th precinct or even shade effects work very well
Cards like carrion feeder and carrion beetle can also work well if your splashing tokens.
I’m so sorry that your family has been impacted by this terrible disease! I share that same wish
I love this, I pulled Phenax and built him immediately, and this helps me with what I'm lacking in the already budget deck lol
I appreciate the charity plug. Good on you.
Oh also, make sure to send me a screenshot of your donation email if you want that signed Wayfarer's Bauble.
@@pryeti Well glad you have been enjoying the deck techs! Phelddagrif is actually one of my personal favorites to play! Hippos everywhere
Awesome deck tech, and necessary message.
Thank you
I was not prepared for the surprise feels.
Fleet swallower and stolen identity would also be a great additions in the style deck as upgraded cards since fleet swallower when it attacks mills half rounded up each time, and with stolen identity you can have two great targets for making a copy of with either consuming abiration or fleet swallower
YES YES YES!!! MILL IS THE BEST DECK TYPE! I HAVEN'T EVEN WATCHED THE VIDEO AND I ALREADY LOVE IT!
Well I hope it doesn't disappoint you then haha
I would also highly recommend adding Duskmantle Guildmage, which in addition to being an alright mill piece, can go infinite with mindcrank
You are the Golden pig for building lots of fun decks and showing us how to win with it. All hail the rat god ....¿Cromat?
I'm in Wisconsin! I can totally attend this.
Kudos to you sir for raising awareness! Also, being that it's a super cheap card, I'm surprised we didn't see Charix, the Raging Isle on this list. Mill out 17 every time you tap it🤘😆
Using war of the spark basic lands. Nice touch there
Minds Aglow, Tunnel Vision, and Hedron Crab are all in my Mimeoplasm Mill deck, along with a lot of these cards.
I love your deck techs! I've built 2 decks aleady with your guides, one for my son and one for wifey! Might I request a Bruna, Light of Alabaster deck next?!? Thank you so much!
Came for the deck techs, stayed for the good causes. ❤️
Fg⁹uicuj⁸uh
I run Disallow, Stifle, and Trickbind in my mil deck, solely to counter Eldrazi reshuffle effects. Premium upgrades mate.
Yes thank you, been waiting for this
I personally would include a duskmantle guildmage instead of the jesters cap to deal with people that shuffle their graveyard into their libraries. I found it to be more reliable. It also combos with mindcrank
YES!
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Hope you like it!
Another fun one to build around!
Phenax was my first commander deck :)
Alot of these cards in commander would just make you an absolute target.
My grandmother is also suffering from Alzheimer's. The personality change is very difficult because you watch the person you love disappear even though their body still walks.
Been waiting for this one!
The most flavorful episode I've seen.
When War of the Spark comes out, you should make a self-mill deck. Between Laboratory Maniac and Jace, there are 2 win conditions. I'm curious what commander you would choose to use for it and the colors you feel are needed.
Here's hoping they reprint Leveler's effect into a commander ;)
Shield sphere reasonable upgrade. 0 mana for a 0/6 with the only downside if you use it to block things which you don't. Semi-reasonable upgrade intruder alarm. It costs a bit but man what a winning card.
Duskmantle Guildmage can help end the game much faster with its first ability in this deck and since Mindcrank is already in here, it can even immediately kill someone for 3 mana. Definitely worth considering for how inexpensive it is.
Great cheap Mill deck most Mill decks are super expensive. Great Video have a great day
I think Jester's Cap or cards like that are a MUST for Mill decks or else it wont work. If you're thinking of building this, you need a card like that. And that last message is real talk. The problem is real and I hope people can help donate for this cause. You will get some of it when I get my next paycheck.
Tunnel Vision + Vessel of Endless Rest is a nice combo that I personally like to have in my version of this deck
one thing to keep in mind is that because of Zendikar Rising, any budget Phenax deck should probably be running Charix, the Raging Isle ($.25), Maddening Cacophony ($1.15), and Ruin Crab ($1.15).
I reccomend Altar of Dementia and Undead Alchemist. These two cards can create great combos especially if you have Lightning Greaves.
I cant attend, nor can i donate, but my family is. I lost my great aunt to alzheimers, and know how rough it can be to experience it. Stay strong, keep on hoping, and just stay on the great and amazing path you are on. I hope you have a fantastic day :)
Im not the biggest fan of Dimir things, but those gods have some swole as hell abilities. I'd love to see you make a deck out of all of them
One of my favorite cards to run in Phenax is Dragon Throne of Tarkir
