According to the Federal Highway Administration, thousands of injuries and fatalities occur each year as a result of accidents on snow- and ice-covered roads. Many drivers are unaware of the common culprit in many of these crashes: black ice. So what is black ice? It is a transparent layer that forms without bubbles, which allows it to easily camouflage itself on the road surface.
Black ice is more likely to form when there is a sharp drop in temperature, such as early in the morning and during overnight hours. Some commonly affected areas are bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas of the highway. These areas have cooler surfaces that quickly freeze when they come in contact with moisture in the air, especially if they are near lakes or rivers.
🚨How to prepare to drive in winter:
Use these tips to prepare your vehicle for driving on black ice or unexpected icy conditions:
🚨 Winter tires.
Swap out your regular tires for winter tires when temperatures start to drop. If your vehicle is regularly exposed to driving in snowy or icy conditions, the handling and grip offered by these tires specifically designed for this climate will be better than all-season tires.
🚨Slow down.
If there are conditions for a higher chance of black ice, use caution by driving slower than the posted speed limit and extend your stopping distance. This could give you more time to react calmly if you get stuck in black ice.
🚦Identify possible black ice warning signs
When favorable conditions are present, be very alert. Black ice closely resembles wet asphalt. Other indicators include:
🚨The absence of water spray on a road that appears to be wet
🚨Cars that suddenly spin or skid
🚨See brake lights ahead
🚨Car or tire tracks in the gutter
🚨Shiny surfaces next to an opaque black
🚨Ways to react when encountering black ice
If you find yourself driving on black ice, use these tips to maneuver out of the affected area:
🚨Do nothing. Avoid making sudden movements or turning the steering wheel. Slowly take your foot off the gas and slide across the ice in a straight line until you find traction.
🚨 Change gear. If possible, shift slowly to a lower gear to gain more control.
🚨 Brake smartly. If you start to skid, press your brakes firmly to activate the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS). Or, if you don't have ABS, brake gently.
🚨 Avoid spinning like a top. If your front end is skidding, turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction of the skid; if the rear end is skidding, turn the steering wheel in the same direction.
🚨 See where you want to go. If you look where you think you might crash, you could inadvertently steer your car in that direction.
