    My old DJ residency had one of these, only figured it out when opening a cupboard and finding the PBX alone with oodles of Nortel phones sitting down below it, plugged a few in to the sockets around the club and everything worked, pages etc... was so cool!

    These phones are old but great to have in a collection

    Awesome! I never had the time and or knowledge to do this long ago. But I finally last year as previously commented got my phone system running via software instead of hardware. Mostly because I want my callers to hear whatever I want instead of a traditional ring. Along with I have a few "local" numbers that people consider longstanding and landline numbers despite now VOIP.

    We have those phones at work. 3 of them. Our pbx system also has the old page tone. They are always in use. Very rugged phones.

    All you need is some intercom speakers and you'll have your own personal PA system.

    Would love to play with a norstar system. their not in the UK that much though.
    Instead got a Cisco IP system to play with. bit more complex in setup but also good for learning if I ever need to work on a VOIP system. but at end of day it fulfils my need for a complex PBX system with tons of phones. just using Ethernet vs a analogue/digital phone line

    I don’t know why, but for some reason, I have a really long ramen noodle looking telephone cable. I use it for phones and screwing around with dialup, not necessary because I have 100 Mb fibre broadband. But nostalgia

    for splicing i recommend 3m idc butt connector. There is no need to strip and can crimp with literally anything (hammer, pliers, slap with a book(my favorite))

    Alternate title: Why I'm Still Single
    I want to get a Norstar 6x16 DR5 or DR5.1 software cartridge (any version with the new page tone). If anyone has a cartridge, non-DS, that they would sell or donate to the channel, do get in touch with me.

      Do you still need a software cart for the 6x16?

    • @pierreverdoni

      Even with DR5.1 software your 6x16 KSU will not give you caller-id You need a c6 interface

    It's a key telephone system not a PBX.
    An SL 1 is a PBX.

    That old page tone is kinda cutesy and not very attention-getting. I can see why they changed it.

      I think JB Hi Fi here in Australia are using very old Norstar systems because I hear that paging tone in every JB store I've been too when a store worker makes a call over the PA system to get attention.

    I think I can imagine how it would be wired in normal use, I'm guessing the RJ21 cable would go into one of those breakout boxes (like what the local phone company here does here in stairwells (for older) or risers (for newer) in apartment blocks, but larger, then the wires would go into the wall or a wire conduit, into the ceiling, and around the office (or in my case as I'm imagining it, a school) and there would be phone jacks with labels with stuff like "EXT. 21" and "EXT. 31" and it would probably be on the same keystone panel (at least that's how I imagined it) as a RJ45 jack for an Internet connection.

      Yep, you're correct. You can still get punchdown blocks and the required tools on eBay and other places, but like most telecom stuff, they're rather expensive.

    Can you tell me where the music used during the end card is from. I know I've heard it somewhere but my brain can't place were it might have been! Thanks

    • @themaritimegirl
      @themaritimegirl  7 лет назад +4

      It's a piece of stock music written in the early 1980s. It's called Power to Spare, by Craig Palmer. It's used in the original Commodore 64 training video, which is where I heard it. It was also used by NBC in their sports programs in the 1980s, and it was used by a show on PBS called Great Lakes Outdoors up until just a few years ago! I love it.

    With the handset, you need to press Line 1 when you pick it up and it should get a dial tone

    • @themaritimegirl
      @themaritimegirl  7 лет назад +2

      You wouldn't in this instance because I had no outside line hooked up, but I later discovered that the Handsfree button was actually programmed as an Intercom button, which is why I got a dial tone once I pushed it.

      themaritimegirl ah ok. My dad had one of these in his office building, but it has in the past couple of weeks been replaced by an iPECS VoIP system. The old handsets are outside getting wet so as you can tell I am quite upset given the value of the systems today.
