Just got your kit yesterday and installed it right now man I'm in love now all I need is the climate control and other buttons and I'm set
Awesome! You can change your switches by putting in 12v 3.5mm LED bulbs but it’s MUCH easier to just get red switches from a 99+ Cabrio.
Great content, new subscriber. Keep up the solid work! Ordered up a red filter set on eBay just now after watching this video. Been looking for a filter for the lcd screens for about a year now. Thanks!
Thanks for your purchase! I'll get them out for you ASAP.
great info ..good video thanks
VERY PRO VIDEO THANKS A LOT YOU ARE AWESOME BRO !!!
Great Stuffs Thanks
Definitely doing this to my GLX.
Great video, man!
Thanks man, glad it helped you out! I think you might be local to me. I've seen your name in the local fb group. You bought John's white Jetta, right?
@@LucidAutowerks yes, sir! She's currently down right now. Input shaft bearing in the trans gave out. Waiting for the clutch and timing chains to come in so I knock it all out at once. Once that's done, I'll be ordering your kit in purple for the cluster.
Hehehe VW life.
Had to peep the channel. Great content. New subscriber! Damn that 2 door Golf crush kind of killed me a little I won't lie lol.
Mind Flowers haha. That car was rusty in places I’ve never even seen rust before. Fortunately its parts will live on in other Mk3s
Lucid Autowerks that is always a good thing when the parts get to live indeed
Thanks!
Thank you man u really helped me
Awesome! Glad it helped you out.
I'm gonna do this with my black faced orange needle cluster in red ;)
So I put an automatic silver 2.0 cluster in my Manual TDI and i believe that the rpms are actually accurate, even though the gauge faces are different, also, do you offer white filters to diffuse the lighting or would just removing the filter all together work?
Hey I’m interested in this wondering if you could do a white color filter, would pay lil extra if necessary
if i change the bulbs for some colored ones, do i then need to take out the filter? Or if i leave it as orginal in, is the color then going to get shitty?
Thanks for the vid
Hi, good video i have a question.. What is the name for material colors??
Thank you for a great video. This is very helpful. What pins will do I connect to energize the speedo, and tach so I can clock the needles.
It’s a little harder than that. The speedo and tach work off of a square wave signal. I’m going to build a bench tester someday. Easiest way to test them is in a working vehicle.
Can I fit a cluster from golf mk3 in mk2 dashboard without big job??
Blue led lighting can be had on a vr6 or tdi mk3 by using the lighting bits from a mk3.5 cabrio cluster;
And of course if you have a 2.0 you can simply use the whole cluster
Great vid btw!!!!
Great video Lucid, very informative. Do you have any schematic to bench test the dash out before installation? Would love to test before re-installing.
deezjet hey I saw your email and sent you a picture of the harness pinout 👍🏼
I'm running light bars today, and had the cluster in my hands thinking about doing this... I'm torn between blue or red. Oh! Thanks for reminding me! I think the head unit can switch back to red!
Ordered.
Awesome, thanks man! I'll get them out for you ASAP!
@@LucidAutowerks - Since we can't gif on RUclips, just imagine the mailman from Rick and Morty saying "Ma' man!"
If you haven't already, please hit up my email about the other derlin bushings; I should have mentioned it in the notes section.
@@NeverMetTheGuy I don't have an email address with your order. Reach out to me at lucidautowerks@gmail.com if you can. I saw the note about the bushings. Your other stuff is ready to ship
like blue
oooooh nice nice nice nice nice wonder if i can use 12V rgbw led and have the hue change from red to blue using tach sensor. ooooh UV LED even better
Could you do a video replacing all the bulbs with LEDs? I found a thread on vortex and tried the LEDs mentioned but they were too long to fit in the cluster, pretty puzzled at this point.
I haven't found any plug-and-play LED bulbs just yet
Awesome work man!
How did you wire up the test harness?
Thanks! There is a pinout of the cluster harness in the Bentley manual. Not in the back by the wiring diagrams. I believe it’s in the “dash” section.
Hey also do you know how to reprogram mileage? I'm picking up the mk3.5 Cabrio cluster for my Cabrio and from what I know the cluster saves mileage not ECU
Mind Flowers I don’t actually. Look up Matt Litke from Clusters by Litke. He runs the BurnalltheMk4s Facebook group. I know he does it, but I’m not sure if he’s located in the US. He may be able to point you in the right direction. There are also some ebay sellers that offer the service.
Great video bro!! I have a cuestion, do you now how to chance the display color??, I refer to numbers chage black to another color. Thank you.
No, sorry. I know that if you remove the polarizing film from the LCD and put it on upside down (or use new polarizing film) that the background will be black and the numbers will be the color of the filter.
@@LucidAutowerks okay bro, thank you very much.
Hi bud I followed the vid but know the lcd display is messed up and not showing anything. Any idea how to fix
Did you do any soldering at all when you were in there? Is there any chance that the LCD screens got flipped or mixed up? You should at least see something but it would be jumbled. Possibly the little wire/rubber strips that connect the screen to the board are not installed correctly?
Why are the us spec and uk spec different ?
Instead of swaping filters(for displays), can I use red LEDs, without filter?
Yes, you can. I had a hard time finding the right sized LED though. I know it’s been done before but I’m not sure where to get the LEDs. I checked superbrightleds.com and couldn’t find ones that fit. I even ordered some that looked similar but they didn’t work.
Just one more question. Display for clock doesn't work as should. It shows digits but some segments(parts of the number) are missing. Display for mileage worked fine until few weeks ago. Now mileage display sometimes shows trip distance without "trip" and .X(X is some number) at the end of mileage. But later(I guess when interior heats up) it shows like it should. Do you know how to fix that problem?
I got mine from this link. They work nice.
www.ebay.com/itm/10Pcs-T5-B8-5d-5050-1smd-Car-Red-LED-Dashboard-Dash-Gauge-Instrument-Light-Bulbs/312533088700?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
Hi there. Is it possible to send it to Germany? As a letter shipment! What would it cost?
With best regards.
Any more info on how you made the custom wall harness for testing?
You can find the pinout for the cluster harness in the Bentley manual. I wired it to a 12v wall adapter I had lying around.
I got all that already figured out, just mostly wondering how you actually wired it together. Having the wall harness would be super helpful so I don’t have to constantly run out to a car to test. Also with the fact my mk3 is in a million pieces right now and can’t actually test operation of any cluster atm lol 🤦🏻♂️
@@Ajcr5050 I'm not sure which pin wires I ran to positive and to ground I can check the Bentley for you. I can't tell just by looking at my connector.
This is fantastic! Thank you! And hey, do you have a video of how to reverse the polarity of the time and odometer displays? (Or quick description?)
Thanks! I’ve read about it, but never done it. Basically you use a razor to lift the polarizing filter from your LCD screen and flip it over. Since they can get damaged when removing, I think people used to take a polarizing filter from a VCR or a DVD player display and use that. Personally I would maybe buy some new polarizing filter material since it’s available online. Hope that helps!
@@LucidAutowerks Solid info, thanks again!
No problem!
I got some of the correct material and I’ll have a video soon as well as I’ll be offering precut filters for switching the LCD polarity.
@@LucidAutowerks That’s awesome! Due to my interest in this, I actually did it myself. Bought some polarizing film, rotated it to an angle where the reverse polarization was correct, then cut out two rectangular pieces. It works super well! But hey having that as an offered product as well as a video would be pretty sweet for sure
Very cool, are these filters still for sale on ebay?
Yes sir 👍🏼
how did you bench test this?I have one that I want to sell but don't know how to check milage oranythiung and can't find anything on line how to do it haha
If you have a Bentley manual, the cluster harness pinout is in there. You need to cut up a cluster harness and add power and ground to a few wires.
@@LucidAutowerks Thank you! I actually ended up figuring it out, I just needed to connect another ground!
Do you have a filter made for the shifter portion on the gauge for automatic cars?
I have red ones with the shift indicator filter here - lucidautowerks.com/products/vw-mk3-instrument-cluster-speedometer-filters?variant=21934620442704
@LucidAutowerks do you have photos how the cluster looks after filter color change? And are there other changes necessary if I have the black background cluster vs the white?
@@JessePacheco-dt5ru I have some pics on my computer. Send me an email at info@lucidautowerks.com
can i just leave th efilters out to make it white? (for the lcd's)
Yes but it’ll be a slightly yellowish light since the bulbs are incandescent. It’s not bad but it’s not a pure white. It’s kinda like a soft white lightbulb in your house.
Actually that’s with just the overheads. The LCDs end up with a little orangeish tint if I remember correctly.
My one keep on display error message on the mileage side is there any thing I can do to sort it out thanks
That problem is something that I don't know how to repair. I suggest that you contact Matt Litke at Clusters by Litke. He is extremely knowledgable and can point you in the right direction.

Thank you for input
what if I just remove the filter and put led color bulb in ?
You can do that too. I had a hard time finding an LED that worked when I looked a few years ago.
i have busted bulbs in my cluster, what type are those bulbs?
I'm actually not sure and I can't seem to find the info. I'll keep looking though.
They are, t5 b8.5d bulbs
strange, i have a automatic but i don't have the PRND lights.
Me 2. Why îs that?
I think it might be to what region your in
Will an automatic cluster work with a manual car? Will the mileage be off?
It will work fine. The only difference is that the gear selector screen on the auto cluster will show all of the PRND21 lit up. The only difference between clusters is when you put a VR6 cluster into a 2.0 the RPM will be off. The total mileage for the odometer is stored in the cluster so no matter what cluster you install it will show the mileage from the previous vehicle 👍🏼
@@LucidAutowerks Thanks, I have a 2002 Cabrio with a manual transmission. The lights will not light up anymore when the headlight are on and the temperature gauge sometimes works.
Hey do you have white color to
Sorry, I don’t. The closest you can get to white is to remove the filters completely but it’s still slightly off-white because of the incandescent bulbs that are used. It’s close to white, though. For actual white you would need to switch the bulbs out for white LEDs. I’m still searching for LED bulbs that are plug and play.
new follewer good vid buddy.. 2 door in the intro is sad to watch
Thanks for subscribing! That red GTI was one of the rustiest I've ever had. I got a lot of good parts from it though so it was a good donor. I dragged it out of someones backyard where it was sitting for years.
CAN I INSTALL LED LIGHT IN MY 97 GOLF MK3 MOD DERSBOR FILTER COOLER LIGHT ????
I haven’t found an LED bulb that fits. I use parts from Mk3.5 Cabrios for the blue LEDs.
