"Happy days are here again" is probably the quintessential depression era song. It was originally featured in the MGM musical "Chasing Rainbows" starring Bessie Love, Marie Dressler and Charles King. This backstage musical featured not only hit songs but also technicolor sequences. Sadly these and most of the entire musical numbers including the "Happy Days" finale are missing from the survivng prints. In 1932 FDR used the song for his presidential campaign and has been used by the US democratic party ever since. Later on it was recorded by many artists including Barbra Streisand in the 1960's. In Europe "Happy days" became very popular in its version by the Comedian Harmonists called "Wochenend un Sonnenschein" (Weekend and sunshine).
The version in this video was recorded by Harry Hudson's Melody Men and released on the cheap Edison Bell Radio label... This is a repost of a video uploaded a few years ago...
The video features summertime images... (let's hope spring returns soon...)

Record in bad condition
This record was recorded with an Ortofon Om78cartridge and stylus. The equalization and restoration was done as truthfully as possible
Thanks for reminding everyone about about America's radical traditions as promoted by FDR (1932-45). No need for more Hooverville in 2021 and Beyond. Denis Bright in Brisbane Australia
Unfortunately 'here again': misery and war.
Less than 50 hours...then it's Official. TRULY...HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN.
When did this happen
Edison-Bell Radio records were very reasonably-priced (sixpence in pre-decimal sterling) and featured lesser-known bands doing cover versions of the song hits of the day. Although cheap, they were well-recorded but not particularly well-pressed.
The sound quality you have achieved is superb and true to the original 1930 engineers' work. Thank you for an excellent post.
The Mitch Miller version was popular in Hungary during the 1960's, when it was the signal song of a program beamed by Radio Free Europe.
Super excellent with very good interesting photos
Wunderbar. Danke!
Truly delightful
@Deutschlandsender Danke schön!
The movie was "Chasing Rainbows".
@gfks11 Thank you very much!
And while we're on the subject, Jack Hylton's is the best known version but this lot are up there, too.
Nah, this is my favorite. Every time I look this up I start by looking up Ben Selvin, until I finally check my favorites for this "best" version. I especially like the video with this one.
@camille885 Merci Camille, je suis content qu'elle te plaise!
Perfect song for the times especially after the Wall Street crash.
Would it be possible to get a downloadable recording for this? Would be used in a documentary about the US caucus system.
This is great quality! How did you do it?
Anton Chigur blocking my view with that giant head of hair!!! Sir...SIR, do you MIND?!
The official anthem of the Democratic Party.
