  • Did you know that a brown bear can eat more than 100.000 berries per day? Denali National Park was for sure one of our highlights on our wildlife trip through Alaska. Undisturbed wilderness, spectacular mountain sceneries, wild animals - Denali Nationalpark is the world’s largest conservation area covering more than 24.000 square kilometers 🌲🦌. You can only explore it on a local bus, get off wherever you want and hike the backcountry. But be aware, even though there are no trails and hardly any people around, you are never really alone - because this is the home of Alaska’s Big Five.
    Five Things you didn’t know about Alaska’s Big Five:
    1️⃣ CARIBOU🦌 - Caribou is the only deer where males and females grow antlers. They travel further than any other land mammal. Some of theme travel more than 5.000 km a year. That’s more than travelling from New York to Los Angeles.
    2️⃣ DALL SHEEP 🐑 - Dall sheep are the Northernmost wild sheep in the world. Their horns continue to grow during their whole life, unlike antlers which are shed every year.
    3️⃣ MOOSE 🦌 - Moose shed their antlers every year. This makes them around 30 kilos lighter.
    4️⃣ WOLF🐺 - There are around 70 wolves living in 10 packs in Denali.
    5️⃣ BEARS 🐻 - Can you believe that these bears can eat more than 100.000 berries a day? Brown bears are on top of the food chain and can easily take down a huge moose, but they mainly eat berries, grasses and roots.
    *️⃣ ARCTIC GROUND SQUIRREL 🐿: The arctic ground squirrel found a rather „cool“ way to survive the long, harsh winter. While it sleeps for 8 full months its body temperature drops as low as -2.9°C - the lowest measured in a living mammal. Their major organs slow down, while others shut down entirely.
    Are you traveling to Alaska and wonder where to see wildlife? Denali National Park is definitely one of the most accessible wildlife places to go on a road trip from Anchorage. Another awesome video guys, I'm always super impressed by your cinematography and editing. I have a kind of weird obsession with bears, I just love watching footage of them in the wild. Amazing to see how close you got. Did you ever feel in any danger?

    • @bugsandbears
      @bugsandbears  5 лет назад

      Oh yeah, we could also watch bear videos forever and ever. Have you seen "The Grizzly Man"? If not, you should definitely.
      So luckily we had all our bear encounters so far from the safety of a car or bus. And for hiking, we're prepared for the unlikely case of a close encounter. However, when we found all the bear poop and so many traces we felt the likelyhood was strongly increasing - and yep we were getting a little nervous - so we changed our route 😅. No bear sighting though. Have you ever seen them in the wild? Cheers, Doris & Matthias

      Thanks, Andrew! We were pretty lucky with some sightings while visiting Denali. Most was shot right from our car or from the local bus through the National Park.
