I've grown blackberries for years and wondered if they could be grown in containers - which in my mind offered numerous advantages - especially if your yard is highly shaded. You could move the pot around to catch the sun during different parts of the season, more easily prune the plant, conserve water, and eliminate weeds. Easier to protect from birds and other varmints too! Can't wait to try this! Your tip about picking blackberries and when to tell the are ripe? Golden! It makes a big difference in flavor in my experience. An excellent and informative video!

I love how you dedicate such long time to make a single video. It is great to sed that your methode works, which in my opinion alot of RUclips videos lack. Most cases they show either only the planting process or only the harvesting. Thank you so much for high quality video!

Thank you, I just bought a couple of bushes, wasn't sure how they would grow in a pot. When I was a kid, they grew everywhere, we would pick them by the bucket loads, so expensive to buy, but if I can plant them in pots, thats great.

FINALLY I know when they are ripe to pick! This is our second year. Mine were huge, black, shiny and so tempting to pick but invariably we'd pick them too soon and while some were sweet, most were sour! Tried all kinds of experiments to discover when to pick. It was a hit or miss. Our raspberries were easy, the cap loosens off the core when they are ripe. Blackberries don't do that. now I know to wait until they lose their sheen. Thanks!

i've grown chester blackberries for 5 years or more and I learned alot from your video. I've moved and now can only grow in pots. You know your stuff. Have you ever tried to grow them in hydroponically or in self watering containers. That's what I want to do.

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  8 лет назад +1

Thanks for your feedback! No as of now I do not do hydroponics because I believe plants were always meant to be grown in soil. The best flavor I get is from soil grown plants. Also plants growing in water lack some nutrients like selenium (which is present in soil). Since the whole idea of eating veggies is to get the most nutrients, I only grow in soil. But that may change one day. Aquaponics actually sounds more interesting to me, I'll see if I can get to it some day :) Good luck with your gardening ventures!

the reason your berries produced on the first year is because these berries were propagated from elbows of an older established blackberry, they take the parent plant's long primocanes, strip and stick the tip into a bag of compost, after 40 days they should have established roots themselves, then they cut it off and when it goes dormant they sell to the public, those primocanes would therefore be considered floricanes by the time you receive them :)

I found blackberries growing wild in my backyard about two years ago. Then, their growth exploded to the point of becoming invasive! This year, I'm going to transplant some new growth vines with their roots into a controlled row. If it is successful, I'll add an extra row next year, and then mow down the original wild bramble to make room for other things.

I live in Louisiana. I bought a blackberry and a muscadine plant from Walmart, like 3 years back, but have never planted them. They're still in their original (and now somewhat faded) pots, but are both nice and green, just doing fine. So, I'd like to know if I pot them now (late April), when could I expect to actually see them produce fruit? I live alone and wasn't able to dig the holes for them, and regrettably, never considered the possibility of container growing them. So thank you for this video and your help!

  • @krodkrod8132

You should heavily mulch the top of the pot to protect the plant from excessive heat and help keep moisture in. Since your in California I would also recommend making sure the container is shaded.

+Something Random (Plant Lover) To propagate blackberries, just take a stem and bury it in the ground, do not cut it! The stem will form roots. See this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Layering and then cut the stem once roots are formed, you now have a new plant!

Can you do a video on how to prune your blackberries. Also do you have any raspberry videos? Do you think they are about the same care? I had problems with pincher bugs eating my raspberry leaves. Any suggestions?? Please and thank you! Love your videos!

Add epsom around base on top of soil for sweeter fruits?

Thank you for this video. I will likely return to it often. I have a new plant in a grow bag. It is growing.. however horizontally. Am I supposed to tie it to a stake? It is about 2 feet.

CG, How do you winter over your containers of blackberries? Do you just leave them be outside or do you bring them in a cool place like a garage or shed?

They survive the winter here. From this container, it was transplanted in the ground. See the updated fruit orchard here: ruclips.net/video/dLODdgI9af4/видео.html

I have my seeds ready I just haven't planted theses yet. I just planted my strawberry seeds yesterday so I want to see how that goes and if that's successful than I'll proceed to plant my blackberry seeds. 😊

Hello my friend. Love all your videos and your passion for organic gardening. I have a request to ask. Recently I was able to get some Indian tulsi basil from a friend and wondered if you could guide me through it or make a video. I wish to plant it in a container to keep it inside during winter since I live in Canada and it’s pretty cold and snowy in winter. Can you please help. Thanks in advance

cant wait to grow black berries in pots cos I have had them in yard before and they took over so got rid of them and never thought you could contain them in pots,i thought the seeds will drop off all over yard and spread through yard again

I just bought three bushes from the nursery. I’m excited. Do I need to trellis the canean and how do I trim old canes?
