This video just reminds me of the last time I got a machine tattoo and while she was tattooing me she sat there being rude about my hand poked tattoos and how she'd never understand why people would do anything other than professionally done machine tattoos...etc. things got awkwardly silent when I explained that my machine tattoos are my fun tattoos and my hand poked tattoos are my religious and cultural tattoos. So ya, if you're a tattoo artist, make sure you at least ask why before you go on a rant lol
The girl who says the fact that the needle is tugging a little on the skin as it gets out grosses her out is just dumb, right? Doesn't she know as a tattoo artist that the needles on the machine look exactly the same in slowmotion? Come on lol
Tattoo come full circle. "Hand Poking" has been done since prehistoric times. Pigments were carbon from charcoal and vegetable and mineral material. Skin infection was part of the routine along with scarification.
Shitty stick and pokes are dope, I've given myself a bunch on my upper thighs and I still get professional quality machine work. In my opinion it's a good place to start because it allows you to form straighter lines if you have patience than if you started with a machine and also gives you a good idea of the relationship between ink and skin before you dive into anything with actual detail. As long as you're being as clean as possible then go wild
i gotta say, as someone with several sick n pokes that i’ve done on myself, it’s not a way to get a good tattoo, but that doesn’t render it bad or gross or useless. i did mine because i was too young to get my tattoos done professionally. i did my research to make sure i didn’t hurt myself and haven’t ever tried for anything more complex than a simple shape. i understand that sometimes people do really stupid things just for clout, but it bothers me when professionals say things like “if it’s not done professionally it’s going to be bad and there’s no point.” there’s a time and place for professional tattoos, but those cost money and are a completely different experience to getting a tattoo done by a friend or doing one on yourself.
It CAN be a way to get a good tattoo if it is designed to be handpoked and done by a professional. I've been handpoking for almost 3 years and I can say that my line work is perfectly well rendered and my work is not cheap, because i've studied it and know how it works.
@@aranzaruiz1963 I've met people who are really good at stick n pokes but don't do it professionally. Unless you consider accepting small tips or beer as payment professional.
Okay I'm just gonna say it. These videos are getting progressively worse. Like is there not one expert available? It's clear that some of these tattooists just have no opinions on these topics.
These people have no clue what they are talking about. Sure there are a lot of shitty stick and poke tattoos, however the tattoo is only good as the artist who did it. Hand poke tattoos can be as good as tattoo gun work.
hand poked tattoos hurt less - and are very very precise, I have one done on me and it is so different to any other tattoo you may see, the precision is amazing and it did not take too much time at all
.......wow the ugh.... i think you should've just got wisdom and perspective of actual hand poke artist. It's not about "speed".... it's an artful and skill
I’ve gotten a bunch of handpoked tattoos by a professional tattoo artist who specializes in that style and I love them. Also, if you look at people like Grace Neutral you can see the artistry behind her work. Some of the viewpoints in this video are really narrow minded
I think those “my buddy did this in his basement” stick n pokes are really.... hit or miss. But those cultures that do stick n poke as part of a long specific tradition of tattooing (like in East Asian countries) that shit is unbelievably beautiful
I love handpokes, my first tattoo was a handpoke and it was a good way to introduce myself to getting tattooed and it healed so nicely. They should've asked Grace Neutral about it, hers are beautiful.
I have 5 hand poked tattoos I did them all myself each taking 1 month! I never got an infection and always used a sterile tattoo needle and gloves. I applied Vaseline when I was finished and covered it with a bandage. I tried a machine and find it harder.
Handpoke tattoos don’t hurt as much as machine tattoos. The vibration of the tattoo machine usually gives people discomfort, and that’s why if you have low paintolerance or chronic-pain disease it’s less uncomfortable to get handpoke tattoo than a machinetattoo.
Here's an easier way to compare the pain of a machine to handpoke: machine tattoos tear the skin, handpoke tattoos are small punctures on the surface of the skin and aren't applied as deep to the skin.
I have a professionally done half sleeve & I almost fell asleep, my 20 minute grave stone stick and poke hurt like a biiitch. Different people have different pain tolerances though
Exactly why I have only hand poke tattoos. I just cannot take machine tattoos, and hand poke existing is amazing because it's the only way I can get art on my body like I've always wanted. Will forever be so grateful for my hand poke artist!
I have both handpoked and machine tattoos - the process of getting the handpoked was so different. Silent, almost meditative. They can both be beautiful.
No $150 is more like the hourly rate of a really good artist. For a little triangle on your pinkie you'd pay the shop minimum set up price. Usually $30-$50 depending on your area.
It also depends where you go to get your tattoo done.. I'm finding a lot of artists just have a minimum price for their work (at least here in Australia they do) It does pay to email in with your enquiry and ask for a quote too since eveywhere is different. Not every tattooist is going to charge $150 for a tiny little tattoo
lol same here. I live in Munich, Germany and paid 180€ for a small poppy. I draw the motives and designs I want to have on my body and it's just so much cheaper to stick and poke myself lmao.

I have 4 handpoke tattoos and they are great. I did 5th on my stomach few days ago, and stomach is the worst because of the skin, its so elastic, and didnt hurt at all, but its so much time...its long....also i did neck tattoo with machine and hurts like hell, but with handpoke, i would die :D
Knowing their opinions are relevant for people who didn't know abt hand poke before hurts. I recently started learning how to make tattoos and I fell in love with hand poke. I also like embroidery, so the time and patience needed isn't anything new to me. Personally I feel like I have more control in every single stab and the skin is less damaged so it heals quicker. But I won't start hating tattoos done with machines and saying hand poke is "normal" one here, like cmon lol.
me a half filipino where tribal tattoos are a thing: so you aren't gonna talk about how...like stick and poke tattoos have a more ritualistic/emotional meaning than just being a stick and poke tattoo, like the fact someone is pouring their own love and time into it? also i have seen some pretty shitty tattoos done with a tattoo gun, as well as i have seen people get infected from machine tattoos too, everything comes with a risk., it just depends on who is doing the tattoo and how your own skin reacts to it, they could at least try and respect the art form of it other than just bashing it left and right.
1:25 Nick Offerman enters the chat. "Have a seat son..." 3:04 All that really needs to be said about it. Also, seeing as hand poke tattoo's are the modern traditional tattoo technique, they are "real tattoo's".
I don't know if Inked has always done this and I'm just noticing now or if it's actually a new thing, but they seemed to cut a lot of people off mid-word in this video. It was funny at times, but it can also be a little annoying. Especially when they never cut back to the person to let you hear the end of it
Hey guys, im handpoke tattoo artist from Indonesia! I think, differences of opinion are fine, but we have to see from time to time there have been changes to more modern techniques using machines, maybe it's easier to learn, but my opinion that is I want to continue to preserve the culture of the existing Indonesian tribes using manual tattoo techniques !!! all the tattoo artists are amazing !!
This video is actually pushing me even more to do handpokes. I think that some of these "artists" should learn what being respectful means and also getting a proper knowledge about tattoos and how they were originally made. Cheers
I don't think I could withstand a real traditional handpoked tattoo...I heard they are very painful and you have to endure extra long sessions"if its a big piece " .I've done a few tiny personal pieces on myself and they may not be perfect but I love them.Handpoking is a quieter and gentler process I think "For small tattoos" .👉🏻Would of been nice to see photos of good handpoked pieces and maybe the artists at work.
This video is super inconsiderate to the history of hand poke tattoo done all over the world, and the amazingly talented artists doing really beautiful work.
Seems like most have no respect for what tattooing started out with. Kinda sad. Shows how how lazy humanity has gotten overall. Let alone it also shows a lack of love for the true art of tattooing
Get a real tattoo... me: “ laughs in Indigenous” / stick and poke techniques are ancient and sacred, there are many people that still practise this art as it is considered medicine traditionally. Much respect to those that understand this rich history.
Fr me growing up Asian and Pacific Islander. Majority of these artists are seriously pretentious and don’t respect the history. Bunch of western washed opinions
I always get a kick out of the 'its only professional if it comes out of a shop' entitlement mentality. Granted doing it out of ones garage, etc is not advisable. There are those who do be take safety as priority that do not work out of a shop and I've seen terrible work come out of shops just as much out of the kitchen. Just because a shop has a paper saying they passed does not mean they didn't pay that inspector for that pass.
I'm getting my first ever tattoo tomorrow, hand poked, by a professional who has studied the art and dedicated it to Viking history! Super excited. Sad that these people don't respect what started tattooing at all.
I got my hand poked tattoo by a 102 lady with full sleeves named Apo Whang-Od. I wasn't just getting it for the art, but for my culture and my ancestry. They age gracefully too, cant say the same with a lot of pinterest-era tattoos that fade in a few months. This traditinal technique is similar to a lot of polynesian and south-American tattoo artists who are keeping this alive. I wished Inked interviewed these people too.
I have 19 hand poke/stick & poke tattoos and 3 pieces done with a machine. The 3 done with a machine cost me insanely more money because of shop fees and such. Also because they were done in America vs Japan. The artwork has faded a bit within 3 years of getting the work done with a tattoo gun as well. Every single poke tattoo looks exactly the same as when I got them. Half of them used “India ink” and I feel like it stays in your skin for a seriously amount of time. 3 of them I did myself when I was away from home on tour with my band. Used a sewing needle stuck into an eraser on a pencil. Wrapped sewing thread around and dipped it in India ink. The process didn’t hurt nearly as bad as people say it does for any of the 19 I got. They are all people who haven’t experienced it. It’s a really amazing experience and you end up truly appreciating the art after the hours that the artist took their time to put culture onto you.
My first tattoo was hand Poke from a Japanese traditional artist that took over 20 hours to complete and covers an entire shoulder, back, and wrapped around to my stomach. It looks so much better than a lot of the stuff these people throw on their bodies with a machine. I was expecting legitimate conversations about poke but I am now Disappointed with this industry. Thanks.
I’ve been hand poking for the last year and a half and absolutely love the medium and the time it takes for every piece. You should’ve gotten some hand poke artist, were real tattoo artist too..
"Only go to a professional, doing it at home is gross" as if yall didn't get your start doing bootleg tattoos in your best friend's loving room. Like....when did tattoo gatekeeping become a thing? Some people's houses are cleaner than tattoo shops!
I have over 30 pieces by a professional hand poke artist and it has always been a good experience. Not all are great but there is greatness among them.
my handpoked tattoo was done professionally and $220. it's an absolutely beautiful cow skull and it's a pretty good size. it's my favorite tattoo! i was tattooed in her sterilized home and it was one of the calmest, safest tattoo experiences ive ever had :^) such a shame that so many artists are uneducated in hand pokes
I’ve actually gone to a professional handpoker that’s in my town. She has done three on me so far and they’re beautifully done. My wrist literally looks like a machine one from my normal machine artist (it’s a lipstick with some flowers). I get compliments on it all the time! If you are able to go and get it professionally done (boy not in your house at 2am) it’s actually quite a lovely experience. Just to not have to hear a machine go buzz for like 2-3 hours and the amount of less pain I was in was super nice.
Neither machine nor hand poking are better or worse, they’re just different and have their benefits based on the artists and clients individual preference
Hand poke tattoos aren’t only single needle. Like most people think. If you train you can do beautiful artwork pretty fast It’s majorly a tribal tattoo. Or prison tattoo.
Handpoked tattoos have been a tradition for thousands of years. I see youtubers and tiktokers using the same techniques as tribal grandmas in India I think it's beautiful to see it around the world
I have 8 tats that are done handpoked but the girl who does is always very clean and i love her art plus its actually not that painful like i fell asleep in most of them cuz i was so calm
I got a handpoked tattoo few days ago in Indonesia. Halfway through the electricity went off in the building for several hours. I was happy that the artists work did not depend on electricity and that he was able to finish his work though :)
I have all black and grey work and I use stick and poke at home to touch up any areas that didn’t take well in the first place or didn’t stay as well when healing. So I’m more just going over bits than doing whole tattoos. I do it at home I use all the sanitary an cleaning products that a professional would and I use sterile equipment. If I ever think I get good enough to try doing one from scratch then why not. It’s not dirty, it’s not unhygienic if done properly. There are some amazing hand poked tattoos. Any one with a machine can fuck them up just like anyone doing hand poke could. It’s the individual doing the work more than the method used that dictates that. For now I’ll continue to touch up lighter bits etc on ones I’ve had done professionally. Maybe one day I’ll have the balls an technique to try a complete one myself, but to say hand poke is gross or shit or unhygienic is just plain wrong. Do it the right way and it’s an intimate experience an some even find it a mediative experience because of the patience time and concentration it takes.
I've hand poked myself and many of my friends. Its fun, and much more sentimental. Also I think the little mistakes add to the appeal. Its hand done after all
These artists confuse me. Most of the art they critique “sucks”. Half of them started tattooing on their friends yet look down on it. Most of them have little to know education in the history (see the quiz video).

"Tattoo artists" discuss How to lose 7 minutes of your life, by Inked
..I've never watched the whole 7 minutes with the new crew lol
💘 hand poked tattoos have been around since the beginning of man
Shut up u confused idiot! 😆 trump 2020 🇺🇸
WaNNa lil ganja lol you're the only one that's confused you conspiracy theory nut bag
WaNNa MaKe LiBs cRy Stop turning everything into politics
Come on lol
It's almost like things happening in slow motion look different when they're not in slow motion.
Yeah but she cant see it with her bare eye while she does it and clearly hand poked pulls and irritates the skin way more
I also found that to be funny, that she didn't know it still pulls up the skin just way way faster. I literally said outloud, 'she's joking right?'
Smartfunnyandlazy she obviously knows that. It’s her job. It’s just too fast to bother her. A hand poke does so slowly so it’s more uncomfortable.
@@redmacbeth5198 I get that, but it was the way she said it that makes it come off sounding ignorant.
Tattoo come full circle. "Hand Poking" has been done since prehistoric times. Pigments were carbon from charcoal and vegetable and mineral material. Skin infection was part of the routine along with scarification.
some of them are fine but many are so judgemental "just ask your friend" y'know, there are really good artists who do this
Shitty stick and pokes are dope, I've given myself a bunch on my upper thighs and I still get professional quality machine work. In my opinion it's a good place to start because it allows you to form straighter lines if you have patience than if you started with a machine and also gives you a good idea of the relationship between ink and skin before you dive into anything with actual detail. As long as you're being as clean as possible then go wild
They all present the most American outlook on hand poking I could ever imagine. Not a great representation of a broader perspective on tattooing XD
as an american.... *i do not wish to associate with these people* (but sadly you're right)
i gotta say, as someone with several sick n pokes that i’ve done on myself, it’s not a way to get a good tattoo, but that doesn’t render it bad or gross or useless. i did mine because i was too young to get my tattoos done professionally. i did my research to make sure i didn’t hurt myself and haven’t ever tried for anything more complex than a simple shape. i understand that sometimes people do really stupid things just for clout, but it bothers me when professionals say things like “if it’s not done professionally it’s going to be bad and there’s no point.” there’s a time and place for professional tattoos, but those cost money and are a completely different experience to getting a tattoo done by a friend or doing one on yourself.
It CAN be a way to get a good tattoo if it is designed to be handpoked and done by a professional. I've been handpoking for almost 3 years and I can say that my line work is perfectly well rendered and my work is not cheap, because i've studied it and know how it works.
There are professional hand pokers. It absolutely can be a way to get a good tattoo
*GET GRACE NEUTRALLLLL!! SHE'S AWESOME!!*
Ymer Monajan Yes. A featured video is necessary.
hand poked tattoos hurt less - and are very very precise, I have one done on me and it is so different to any other tattoo you may see, the precision is amazing and it did not take too much time at all
That’s what Jess Yen said. He’s a phenomenal hand poke-type tattoo artist. He does Tebori.
My hand poked tattoo felt very relaxing. I don’t like how the artists on here are kinda bashing them as ‘not real tattoos’ but hey each to their own
.......wow the ugh.... i think you should've just got wisdom and perspective of actual hand poke artist.
Handpoked tattoos look very different. I actually prefer the look
I have both handpoked and machine tattoos - the process of getting the handpoked was so different. Silent, almost meditative. They can both be beautiful.
I did my own stick and poke bc tattoos are just expensive af if i wanted like a triangle on my pinkie id have to pay $150 dollars lmao
"Get a real tattoo"
Otzï the iceman: "Am I a joke to you"
This is what happens when people dont have their own opinions
Knowing their opinions are relevant for people who didn't know abt hand poke before hurts.
I recently started learning how to make tattoos and I fell in love with hand poke. I also like embroidery, so the time and patience needed isn't anything new to me. Personally I feel like I have more control in every single stab and the skin is less damaged so it heals quicker. But I won't start hating tattoos done with machines and saying hand poke is "normal" one here, like cmon lol.
I’m shocked that they don’t get why people like hand poke tattoo. 🤦🏾♀️
me a half filipino where tribal tattoos are a thing: so you aren't gonna talk about how...like stick and poke tattoos have a more ritualistic/emotional meaning than just being a stick and poke tattoo, like the fact someone is pouring their own love and time into it?
also i have seen some pretty shitty tattoos done with a tattoo gun, as well as i have seen people get infected from machine tattoos too, everything comes with a risk., it just depends on who is doing the tattoo and how your own skin reacts to it, they could at least try and respect the art form of it other than just bashing it left and right.

Especially when they never cut back to the person to let you hear the end of it
Hazle Weatherfield in this set of recordings they have way to many people and the editor had no idea what to do
Most of the folk have zero respect for where their art started!!!
Its traditional, heritage, thats important.
Hand poked tattoos are the first tattoos that most people get in middle school or high school. Lol I did it with some ink and a compass
Watching this as I just finished my hand poked tattoos.
Handpoke tattoos come out so much better than machine ones. They look so much more natural and the process is less invasive than the buzzing needle.
“i don’t wanna be like shitty about but *laughs in mean girl* “ and proceeds being shitt about it 👏 greaaaat

I was expecting legitimate conversations about poke but I am now
Disappointed with this industry.
These guys are incredibly disrespectful about an entire sculpture of tattooing. "JuSt GeT a ReAl TaTtOo" OKAY BRENDA THIS IS A REAL TATTOO BUT OOOOKAY
@CrooK *subculture, my phone had auto corrected. No offence but you didnt get it was a mistake by reading the entire thing?
This video is exactly why I love hand poked tattoos lol.
"it's been around for like, a really long time"
*yes... like thousands of years long time*
"they always look bad"
"bad" is different for everyone. Someone's bad is another person's great
I have over 30 pieces by a professional hand poke artist and it has always been a good experience.
Give Cavan Infante his own show!
The only tattoo i have was hand poked by my old room mate when i was 16. Its not great but not terrible.
I don't trust a tattoo artist with no tattoos

@@lucasreis4606 yep
🤣
@jack mama damn you don't trust alot of people than
Or not enough tattoos
Neither machine nor hand poking are better or worse, they’re just different and have their benefits based on the artists and clients individual preference
does anyone know who tattooed the roses on the artist's arm with the red lipstick on?
Hand poke tattoos aren’t only single needle. Like most people think.
If you train you can do beautiful artwork pretty fast It’s majorly a tribal tattoo. Or prison tattoo.
Handpoked tattoos have been a tradition for thousands of years. I see youtubers and tiktokers using the same techniques as tribal grandmas in India I think it's beautiful to see it around the world
I really wish there were some examples included in the video. I have no idea what it is and am now off to google to find out lol
Hahaha. This video should be called machine tattoo artists hating on hand poked tattoo technique.
I love when INKED shows us "these" artists
Hand poke specialists create these beautiful delicate designs that a machine could never achieve.
I think hand poked tattoos have more love and dedication behind them which makes them meaningful
I got a beautiful hand poked tattoo last week from an amazing artist that specialises in them
I've hand poked myself and many of my friends. Its fun, and much more sentimental. Also I think the little mistakes add to the appeal. Its hand done after all
These artists confuse me. Most of the art they critique “sucks”. Half of them started tattooing on their friends yet look down on it. Most of them have little to know education in the history (see the quiz video).
i dont get why they refer to machine tattoos as "real tattoos" like...??? it's still a fucking tattoo even if it's hand poked
You guys really think they are talking about ancient/spiritual tattooing. No they’re talking about the shady hand poking done by some shady dude giving you a trash Bart Simpson tattoo. Stop jumping to be offended. It’s obvious that they aren’t talking about the originators
