Hua Hua idolises the late singer and actor Lesley Cheung. He was a huge star who was so loved by his audiences but then vilified when exposed as gay, finally committing suicide.
This was Lesley's signature song. It may be the only song Hua Hua has sung without changing the original arrangement at all, so deeply he respects Lesley. (Hence the old school feel to it.) He also performs it in his dressing gown as Lesley did. This loving, emotional tribute reflects Hua Hua's empathy with mental health issues and his own determination to live on his own terms.

For anyone out there who doesn't get it yet, it takes a while to find out what happiness really is and who you are and how to connect with your authentic self. Keep searching. Look inwards and you'll see everything more clearly

This is a very spesial song to him, and thus his fans too. This song is in the very core of Hua Chen Yu as and artist. Everytime I watch him deliver this song, it makes me so ful of awe for him as an artist and as a human being.

Hua Hua has said in the past that, instead of chasing happiness, he tries to live a life without worry. It seems much more attainable to learn to let things go rather than seek something which seems elusive. Once you're able to do that, happiness will find you.

The wardrobe is a tribute to Leslie Cheung (his idol) who sang this song in housecoat in his concert. He also sang this song at Superboy competition. There is Eng sub on this performance with judges response. During his first five Mars concerts he sang this song as a signature end or during his concert.

This is a cover of the song by singer/songwriter and actor Leslie Cheung. He died after jumping from the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong on April 1, 2003. Leslie was 46 years old and left a brief letter stating that he had been diagnosed with depression.

Another pearl of wisdom, thank you, Phil. Happiness. So true, you can never find happiness by chasing it or trying to acquire it through wealth, status, recognition etc. The simple truth is, happiness is a state of mind. It is dependent on you and you alone.

Thanks for this reaction Fil & Rosa for the recommendation
Leslie Cheung was one of Hua Chenu's idols and I think the song means a lot to him on a number of different levels which is why he puts so much into it, although, emotional as this is, it's hard to believe that this is nowhere near his most emotional version of this song out there!
Hua Chenyu has so many wonderful songs, he never ceases to amaze me with his music.

Fil, beautiful track. Powerful message matched with a classic arrangement of crescendo strings.

Love this performance every time he sings it! You made note if the level of emotion and I noticed that you haven't done a reaction to his performance of "Dad, I'm Home". You really need to check it out. It's delivered in a completely different format. You have to watch the live version, not the slideshow version. Search for Hau Chenyu, saddest song.
Really would like to see your reaction to this.

Beautiful cover of Leslie Cheung's song. Hua Hua is driven by the lyrics of words, which he sells with his amazing vocal abilities. He doesn't write lyrics, but he seeks out songs he relates to. Or, has lyricists rewrite for his own compositions, until they say what he wants. This always moves me. First time, I really struggled with my emotions. 😭😭😭
The dressing gown was an homage to Leslie Cheung (Hua Hua's own idol) who wore a robe on stage.

this time Hua Hua did not make arrangements out of respect for her late idol Leslie Cheung. Beautiful and emotional song❤

Thanks Fil, a wonderful reaction to this song. Hua Hua was so emotionally invested in this song, you felt the sadness, sorrow and yet a sense of determination. There is a video showing Hua quickly exiting the stage after the performance, the emotions of the song still very present on his face, that his music partner quickly followed him; and gave him a big hug. Hua Hua is extraordinary in his ability to perform a song that touches me so much...I just love this guy!💗💗

As much as you enjoy Hua Chenyu, I wish you would get to know more of the behind the scenes, backstory of things. For example, you touch on the surface meaning of the "I am what I am". What you truly miss is why he is singing this song, who wrote it originally, and what happened to the original singer. Once you learn the deeper stories, then the song takes on a much different meaning and you can appreciate Hua Hua even more. I think the same can be said in part about some of Dimash's early work too.
Songs like Friend, Dad I'm Home, and his trilogy songs are all of this need to see the backstory. Often the pre-interviews of the talent shows is where you get this information, while other information comes from the fans in the know.

He actually held it together better than usual this time. He often reduces himself and the audience to tears with this song. I've usually seen the line translated "I'm a firework of a different color." Hard to say which is the correct translation. I like the one I'm used to because A. I'm used to it and B. Leslie was different, and he knew it. HCY is also different and knows it. It's a lonely feeling. But what a beautiful sentiment, I'm a firework, same as you, just a different color. I also love the line "we are all the pride of the creator." Leslie Cheung wrote this song, but like HCY, not the lyrics. The person who wrote them for him couldn't have done a better job of designing the song to fit him. The shaming of gay people has gone on far too long. I like this way better. God-made and God-approved. The man LC lived with reported after his death that he had been getting treated for depression and flirting with suicide for a long time. (Can't remember that man's name, but I know he stayed single for the rest of his life, or at least until the article I read was written.) Every time he sings this, it's a tribute to Leslie Cheung.
