I had an egyptian archeology class in college, my egyptology professor mentioned that its highly likely that at first Set was god of desert that people prayed to in order to please him and not cause drought, storms, and eaethquakes, not to mention protect them from people living in desert like Lybians in upper egypt, kinda like Greek Poseidon, early in egyptian history when egypt was bunch of small settlements and city states, but over time as the Egypt evolved and the war of upper and lower egypt metioned here slowly but surely changed the general idea about him, since cult of Osiris and Horus took over with the victory lower egypt but his primary function of protector remained since he still protects Ra's boat.
Set does have 2 sides to him, he can be either a villain or a hero. Now when they showed him in The Mummy 2017, they did mess up like had him as The Egyptian God of Death when his brother Osiris is The God of Death. Set is a lot like Ares being how they are both Gods of War as well as Chaos and Destruction. In some stories he is The Father of Anubis in his union with his Sister-Wife Nephthys. Also being a Storm God, Set VS. Apep is like the other myths about Storm Gods who have faced Serpents/Dragons, in Greek Mythology it is Zeus VS. Typhon, Norse Mythology it is Thor VS. Jormungandr, in Native American Tales The Thunderbird VS. The Great Horned Serpent, In Slavic Mythology it is Perun VS Veles, in Hinduism it is Indra VS. Vritra, and in Japan it is Susanoo VS. Orochi.
Set is one of my favourite gods. He is so cool and evil. Yet being evil he is still loyal to Ra
Something that really fascinates me about Set is guessing what kind of animal was the inspiration for his head.

I think he kind of killed Osiris in self-defense in the earlier texts; Osiris kicked him or something. But, I do agree that he is not as black or white.
