Hi. Good video! I would like just to add the info that if you would like to use the Public IP of your EC2 virtual machine as your DNS server, you need to access: Settings > DNS > And select ''permit all origins'' on "Interface Settings".
Im currently enrolled at Evolve Cyber Security BootCamp, I have a TA that isn't helping explain in depth of what exactly is going on clearly. I appreciate you creating this walk-thru video, Vincent Stevenson you are a saint. I've spent hours trying to figure out and fail forward with this challenge. Thanks and lots of love from San Diego!
DNS Address (private IP of e2e instance) is not working. I set the security rules are exactly the same as in your video, and selected 'Permit all origins' in pihole dns interface settings. I tried pinging the dns, it is not pingable from any of my devices.
Thanks Vincent - well explained and really helpful. But what stops users from anywhere in the world now connecting to your pihole dns server? Would you need to restrict that by IP address? In my case my ISP does not provide static IP addresses.
Problem with this is I can't configure on my android phone as it expects a URL rather than an IP address for the DNS server - not sure what I should specify for this
I can access my pinhole through public IP but when I use that IP to my phone as DNS, my phone doesn't get anything, and also pinhole doesn't block anything. What to do?
While running on AWS - In Settings -> Interface Settings -> I have Allow local requests only and am getting "ignoring query from non-local network" errors. What did you select for your interface settings?
You Are a Legend, I was wondering why My Server isn't working. I just added UDP and TCP for my Lightsail and it works! Thank you!!!!!

this would allow everyone to connect to that dns server, I would't recommend this!!!
@@thetiagomatos understood! But this is exactly what I need 🙂

i thought something was wrong when i saw the private ip, it makes sense. great video!
awesome. specially since raspberry pi cost a small fortune. I was searching for adguard home on aws and found this gem.
Incredible breakdown. Nice work 😄
Thanks man, you are the best. A f* legend!
Thank you Vincent, I wondered if I could use an EC2 instance to run PiHole.

How can I configure a domain name to my pihole dns, not to the user interface, to use instead of the ip?
Thank you a lot.

same as you
I did follow steps but when I changed DNS server on my router to the AWS static IP, I couldn't connect to internet anymore. ANy suggestions?
in pihole settings and DNS change to Respond only on interface eth0
@@luisrdki Thanks, man. I spent a long time tshooting and now is working!!

It works after I chose the 2nd option
@@xmennaruto96 Hey could you specify which option you chose?
"Respond only on interface eth0" or "Bind only to interface eth0"
I got the same error. Did you resolve this issue?
Can this be done on lambda
pihole is not blocking ads
Is an open dns resolver a good idea?
No, it can be abused
