Kyle, great teaming up with Jerome Andre. This destined to become a "Classic Out-of-Spec" episode that many will look back on. The conversation between the two of you really provided great insight to the state of the custom/conversion industry. So much has changed over the last 3-5 years. Amazing to see this part of the automotive industry becoming mainstream on EV tech and performance.
An Out of Spec EV build/conversion channel, would be amazing. My preference is truck conversions, but as long as the channel gets into geeky details. Any type of EV build would be fascinating. Good luck getting it started.
I didn't see many late model conversions. Would like to see how they can convert 2010 and newer with the integrated screens, body control modules and other related items. They can start with my 2019 RAM... Ha!
How do the conversion “kits” (not “skateboard” platforms) compare to the replaced ICE components? I understand it varies by car/engine, but roughly how much is the weight? I’m curious about changes in weight distribution.
Weight distribution can be balance almost at will by using two packs (one front one back). Budget wise a ful EV conversion is probably 50 to 100% more costly than a few ice drivetrain (for now) but you get more performance.
I think it’s a horrible idea to destroy old classics. Even for the environment it is better to use gas for the 5 times you take your classic for a drive instead of using so much resources that only wait in your garage.
This conversion market will probably become huge for people that are gear heads and want to do their own work. Yes please start a channel dedicated to this space!
Using the less desirable version for a conversion is perfect. Conversions will get easier and easier with more component sales. I also like the drop in electric motor option where it drops into the engine compartment of a vehicle and adapts to the rest of the drivetrain.
Do you want the truth or to feel good? I’m a 70 year old gear head who’s been restoring vintage sports cars since I was a teen. I loved them more than anything in the world (except maybe vintage motorcycles). After 4 years of driving a Tesla Model 3 I honestly have lost all interest in classic vehicles. The Tesla is just too good and there’s simply no way you can bring a classic up anywhere near a Tesla. I wouldn’t have thought so...I don’t expect you to believe me. But wait until you spend a couple years with a Tesla Model 3 or Y. Sadly I think this market niche will be as extinct as VW/kit cars were after the 70’s. But maybe I’m wrong...
People will always want to show their individuality and be willing to be a little less comfortable for it. You just don't care what other people think anymore 😂
I have to agree. I love old cars but the reason they are trendy is because 1: Recession is here & people are trying to keep their old faithful mules running as long as they can. 2: Some shady businesses are feeding speculation with flipping & conversion. Today the Tesla 1st generations are starting to arrive on the used market for less than 20 K $. There's just no turning back especially when safety is considered. Old cars are genuine ⚰️ on wheels compared to the best modern cars.
Model 3 highland perf awd chassis under a 1957 chevy bel air perfect elktromod. Almost the same width, wheel base etc. Or use the roadster shop style chassis modified for full ev pack's, independent suspension awd all bolt in style(Ford did this with the E-100 truck a few years ago using a full mach e gt drivetrain suspensions and pack underneath. Using reproduction sheet metal for various killer style elktromods. Without actually cutting up or modifying a true numbers matching classic chassis. 👍🏻😎
another great program. You are on a roll on so many levels these days. Thanks. Camera should be on the cars, not the speakers, however. I skipped over a bunch of stuff where the cameras showed almost nothing.
Great video.. Definitely would like to see a channel dedicated to EV conversions. I'd also love to see places that could update older EVs like my 2016 Spark EV to support newer battery types to extend my capacity from 19KWH to 32 or better along with an update to the on board charger from 3.3 to 6.2 for faster home charging. It would also be cool if an eAxle of say 60hp and an additional 100lbft of torque could be added to the Spark for 200hp, 427lbft of torque and 4WD just for more grins than I get now😊
We need more conversation videos please! I suspect most people on this channel care about EVs because they care about the planet and addressing climate change. So, it must be emphasized that the most sustainable pathway forward is to covert older ICE cars, not build brand new EVs. Plus, many people like analog (and physical buttons) and find all the tech in new EVs too much. But the conversion market thus far is way too expensive for the average person. Electric Classic Cars, EV West, and similar outfits do great work, but most people cannot fork over 50K + for a conversion. I wanted to convert my old ’01 E46 but it was more than buying a brand new Model 3. So, Kyle, I would love to see you talk to those that do conversions in how they foresee turning this into a mass market venture to serve those with more modest means, not just in the US, but also in 'developing countries'
My favorites of this group was the electric Jag XKE and believe it or not the Ford Mach-e Rally sand tan color off road 4x4 with the wenches in the frunk. Ford might be onto something with that one.
People have been converting vehicles to EV for many years (decades) but the technology wasn’t great and it used to be lead-acid batteries. Originally it was also just people wishing to get away from gasoline/diesel engines but now with the real power/speed you can get out of an EV motor hot-rodders/custom car enthusiasts are recognizing the possibilities.
Vw conversions are popular and you walked by the vw bus, anything new with systems for these, particularly to increase range? Tesla drive axle with Tesla batteries?
I would love to see a dedicated channel, especially with the nerdy stuff. Here in France, it’s excessively hard to electrify a car on a legal basis. At one moment, you needed to have the OEM's approval for the project (OEM that still in 2023 are anti-EV), and that was even before the safety regulators, registrations bureau and other government institutions (not even speaking about the insurance companies that are all extremely reticent to any modification you’ll do on your car). I don’t know where it stands now, but my guess is that nothing has changed. So I love to see it happen elsewhere. Maybe it will come to Europe one day, once they see that moding a car won’t collapse the whole society. But I doubt it.
I like the principal of converting classic car, however, much, much tighter legislation is required to ensure the chassis, brakes and suspension components can handle the much greater hp and torque. It’s not just a case of dropping in a motor and batteries.
Hi out of spec team I would like to request you all to come India and collaborate with some Indian EV specific or auto RUclips channels and test out the EVS available in India and also the chargers available here.
I really want to see a Smart ForTwo conversion kit come out. Imagine if Mercedes knew what they were doing, and had put a serious battery pack and drive train in the last Smart EV it could have Chinese Smart car clone range. And more space because the bottom would be flat inside. I would love to know if you rip the guts out of a petrol or EV one, what could actually fit inside it with a competent conversion done by serious engineers and mechanics? *Serious as opposed to the people at Mercedes who I don't really respect because they abandoned the best car idea in the world and are still making ICE cars and campaigning for more lung disease.
This is not new or coming its been around for 10 plus years ,in fact the original hobbyist version is dieing off replaced with the commission one or buy drop in kits.
nice to see a report about modernity from a gearhead. one hears so much from dug in people who treat fossil fuel as a religion, some to the point of hostility. As if the type of fuel was important enough to matter compared to the complete design and technology. Plus it's kind of silly investing custom build money into machines that will kill life as we know it. I have a C5 corvette convertible that is just waiting for the industry to mature enough so that the price is no longer exotic.
FFS, Kyle, maybe it is generational but your over-reliance upon hyperbole is the most annoying thing about this channel. Please investigate the possibility of expanding your vocabulary beyond the constant misuse of “insane”, “crazy”, “amazing” for things that are simply noteworthy or interesting.
This is too slow, I'm equally interested in seeing someone swap one of the most used engines and swap them out, as a European I'm thinking golf engine, mostly because the new geb of vw group is worse than the last one so I just want to swap them n use the last gen, help save the planet.
If I was going to do an Ev conversion it needs to justify removing a V8. Meaning the kit must be better performance than the V8 with good range. I absolutely hate crap Ev kits that ruin a car by turning it into a glorified golf cart. I will still miss the sound of a great engine. That Cobra conversion kit was a big hideous box in the engine bay. No thanks Can't they make some effort to have it look good. It's ugly The Ford Mach E isn't bad looking for an SUV, but I will never call it a mustang.
This is great to see. Many people like me have always loved their classic cars, but would really like to see an easily adaptable kit to update the drivetrain to EV power. Thanks!
An Out Of Spec EV Conversion channel would be fantastic. I have been following the DIY and Kit space for at least 5 years. I love the direction of standardized training, equipment, etc. I would love to see a channel that explained conversions to different levels of desire: From 1973 Fiat Spider, retain manual and classic simplicity, 1996 Ford Ranger 4x4 with aftermarket recent infotainment system to a 2020 Jeep Gladiator with current EV infotainment and features. Add to this how to aftermarket upgrade an early Kia Soul EV to current batteries, 400V system, and current infotainment features. Old EVs made newer, recycling what gets replaced.
Yes, the ICE to EV conversion business is really taking off. Did you know that Ford and Chevy now make electric "crate" motors? Ford's is called the Eluminator, Chevy's is called the eCrate. Depending on how it is done, it can be more sustainable to convert an existing ICE vehicle than to build a new EV. Most of the carbon-intensive work (mining, smelting, manufacture) was done to produce that ICE vehicle. What about classic cars? In my opinion, rare classics should probably be left alone. However, millions of cars have been produced with great exteriors and mediocre to piss-poor ICE drivetrains. In any case, Kyle, I think you'd have a blast doing a deeper dive into this growing industry. #sema2023
I'd like to see an EV conversion kit that takes up the space of one or more of the legacy ICE packages like small block Chevy and TurboHydro TH400 transmission or Ford small block and their most popular transmission back in the day. This would be great because there were MILLIONS of cars made with these combinations of engines and transmission. The EV kit would fill the engine compartment with the electric motor as well as all of the electronics and the one-gear gearbox needed and about half of the battery pack. The other half of the battery pack could go where the fuel tank used to go and/or in the bottom layer of the trunk. There are lots of these old ICE/Tranny combos that existed over the years in the US and all over the world. Ideally the kit would be something that is bolt-in complete and doable by anyone who is mechanically inclined but not necessarily electronically inclined.
The electric motors are so small they can fit where the transmission was. Under hood space would be used up by controllers, chargers and some batteries. Remainder of the battery can go to the rear of the car.
@@joeclutchless1944Yep. There are several places that the batteries could go, including the trunk, where the fuel tank was, under the rear seat and possibly in the engine compartment. For best weight distribution they could be spread in more than one area. What's also cool about this idea is that you could conceivably start with a small battery for a modest range and then add more later when you have the time and/or money.
Yes, please cover more conversion stuff. Also interested in seeing what will be available to ’upgrade’ existing EVs and PHEVs (for instance converting a PHEV to BEV or upgrading the charging and battery capacity in existing cars).
Kyle, thank you so much for the segment it is so interesting and helpful for many of us who are interested in moving in this direction to have our old cars converted or to become trained in doing so ourselves.❤❤❤
Absolutely need a EV conversions channel from OOS. Electric Classic Cars is awesome to see what they're doing and would love to see how more state side conversions are happening with older US makes and models
$50K conversions is never going to be "large scale". What is needed is a series of kits to convert recent quality vehicles whose only problem is a blown engine or trans that makes the car not worth fixing as an ICE car. 15-20 year old Mercedes and BMWs and Audis that would cost $10K+ to fix and so can be bought for $1K as a base to convert into an EV. 50kwh of 2170 cells can be bought for under $4K, and a Tesla front drive unit for $1500 on eBay. I want a $1k kit that has all the brackets, racks, OBDII spoofing and CAN control needed to take those readily available components and turn any car EV by an average shade tree mechanic in a couple of weekends. Not something that needs a 4-post lift and special scissor battery table. Not a rich man's hobby or an "enthusiast's dream" or "tinkerer's toy" , but a practical re-use of an ICE car into an EV with reasonable performance, creature comforts, reliability, and for under $10k all-in. Because there is no point in spending $50k on a conversion that is, in the end, a used car where everything except the drivetrain is old tech and probably can't compete with a $35k brand new Tesla on any level.
I work for a company in the UK called Lunaz restoring and converting everything from Bentleys to bin lorries 👍 Nice to see some coverage of what we and others do.
There's a number in Europe and the UK (see electric classic cars), there's a company doing kits with the hope it can become economic to convert than buy an new car. France also has grants for hybrid conversions. Would love to do one myself...
Love the video, I am in to ev conversation!! Looking to build an ev swap with a modern twist of a 1936 Chevy master deluxe sedan! Looking for a school/ training to go to ! To get more info!! And move a conversation Company of my on !! Would love to see more videos on the subject!!! And i already get the magazine, it’s great as well!!!!
This is the most exciting thing I have seen yet. I'm DIY, old school, grease monkey who is a computer programmer, by education and profession. Somebody give me some money. I want to start an EV mechanics school. Our economy is over-loaded with young uncertified labor. Wow.
Out of Spec Conversions. EV conversion market needs to be covered more. With the transition away from ICE, it will leave a lot of cars rotting in junkyards. Converting them would be the right thing to do. We will need some regulation on this, so it’s not the wild, wild west it is today. And for EV conversions to become more mainstream, they will need those standards to be able to use public DC fast chargers.
Why there wasn’t a kit for a regular Joe to drop their , like F150, Silverado or Chevy Colorado? Just a plug and play kid, I have seen it in the news companies who said they have a kit coming but nothing here?
More of this please! I live in Rhode Island and our license plates typically have a light blue wave on them but my Bolt EV (and all EVs and hybrids) have green waves.
Electric Classic Cars is one of my favorite channels! Richard does a great job.
Fun! The full EV platform frames could evolve into the new era of Coach Builders

EVTV in Missouri is a must see.
I've been shopping around the last few years for the best approach to electrify my Rolls Royce. I've got plenty of room for batteries.
An Out of Spec EV build/conversion channel, would be amazing. My preference is truck conversions, but as long as the channel gets into geeky details. Any type of EV build would be fascinating. Good luck getting it started.

Asking good questions. Thanks for sharing the experience. 👍

Carol Shelby would have LOVED this 💯

This is the future I’ve been waiting for
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ ☮ ❤
Bring us plug-in hybrid conversion kits for pickup trucks since OEMs aren't building them!
If there was a car i would hv love to conver😂t that could be the lincoln town car!
Love that panther body on frame...
I'd like to see one important modification: a Tesla Model3 shooting-brake/wagon😍. Only metal-work. Should be doable.
Model 3 highland perf awd chassis under a 1957 chevy bel air perfect elktromod. Almost the same width, wheel base etc.

The pearl white Chevy truck was our build. It is all new metal. Nothing used on it. The gt40 was our frame and molded body.
Can't wait to see the new channel for this stuff.
check out out of spec RENEW! @zachkane7378

All of that sounds about the price of a fixed salvage model 3 perf.
We need more conversation videos please! I suspect most people on this channel care about EVs because they care about the planet and addressing climate change. I would love to convert an F100 like the one Ford did one day.
I have been wanting to get into doing Ev conversations for a while. I would love to start a shop out of my garage. Dual Porpoise 🐬🐬
JEROME... *BARTON FINK* of the EV Space 😝
Vw conversions are popular and you walked by the vw bus, anything new with systems for these, particularly to increase range? Tesla drive axle with Tesla batteries?
Governments ought to start including conversions in the various financial incentives they offer.
Would be nice but the market will not even required it.
I wonder if one of these ev kits would work on my mazda, and be less than 5000.00.
EV, YES!
It will bring a great idea for the channel to cover this space.
As long as the car runs on bottled lightning I'm down to watch videos on it
👍
There is no “sacrilege” 😊😊😊
Is there a channel that actually looks at the cars?
Kyle you need to make a video on the ride share service Freebee they are fully electric and fully free it would make a good video
I like the principal of converting classic car, however, much, much tighter legislation is required to ensure the chassis, brakes and suspension components can handle the much greater hp and torque. It’s not just a case of dropping in a motor and batteries.

what about de-conversion? I mean there are so many hybrids out there what if I'd like to run it as a normal car.
Is your name “Frankenstein?”
Oh and I also want an old ekec sl to cruise with my dog
lets get a conversion kit for an 07 yaris... 🤣

Maybe this is the future of EVs, the big car companies are shutting down production of EVs.

You certainly have my vote to see more EV Conversions. Thanks for covering this aspect of the EV World.
I love the whole EV conversion space! Would love to see more developments.
EV conversions are so HOT right now! I also look like Hansel 😎 check out my EV Conversions and modified EV's. Jeromes a great guy. Nice vid 😉⚡️🇬🇧
Great conversation between a couple knowledgeable and cool people. What’s not to like? Thanks!

I work for a company in the UK called Lunaz restoring and converting everything from Bentleys to bin lorries 👍
Nice to see some coverage of what we and others do.
Thanks. A visit at Lunaz would be de rigueur should the channel get the green light.
I wasn’t able to make show so thank you for the detailed tour! Oh and thanks for the SoCal EV shoutout at 37 minutes.
There's a number in Europe and the UK (see electric classic cars), there's a company doing kits with the hope it can become economic to convert than buy an new car. France also has grants for hybrid conversions. Would love to do one myself...
The Tesla model 3 conversion to replica 300SL was amazing

I love this especially the old Ford pickup. Give me more!

I'm looking for EV conversion on my Porsche 928 in exchange for advertising your logo on the car.
30:57 Elon Musk should listen to these wise words and remember it when he talks about FSD next time.
I am absolutely interested in EV conversions. Please cover this space.
This episode needs the title: EXCITING!
Showing stuff more and this talking guy less would be good.
Show the cars that are capable of powering your home in a pinch.

I live in Rhode Island and our license plates typically have a light blue wave on them but my Bolt EV (and all EVs and hybrids) have green waves.
