A little backstory about the planet and temple they where at and why the Jedi and Sith there where petrified. The planet Malachor was the location of a Sith Temple created by Darth Tanis a female Sith witch (The holocorn voice) who created a Superweapon which could turn its victims to stone. The Temple itself turns into a flying base and there are also other dark side weapons and artifacts scattered amongst the planet. The two groups fought what is known as the Battle of Malachor aka as the Great Scourge of the Sith.
It was also where Darth Sidious indocrinated Maul into the Sith by making his young apprentice ingest the ashes of the dead Sith causing him to experience visions of thousands of Sith warriors dying to the Jedi. (Sith Genocide). At the time the Sith where an actual dark side using Race that where taken over by rogue Jedi seeking more knowledge/power from the force.

@@nothingmusic42 I just really hope they don't backpedle. When she says it, she's not in any fear of becoming a Sith. Feloni was building even further upon that the Jedi were wrong in their dogma. Yes Maul is not a Sith but a very dark side user who revels in it because he's arguably the most insane and hatefilled character Star wars has ever produced. If he wasn't filled with such rage when it came to whatever goal is ahead of him. He would probably have become the most dangerous force user in the universe. But it's because he is unable to find any balance in the light that makes him be able to win certain battles but never the war. Ashoka on the other hand actually has balance, not in a Windu he could use the dark side because he would prepare himself mentally and meditate out the dark impulses. Ashoka actually fully achieves complete balance by not dealing in any absolutes. She's not going to slaughter a village, nor be a pacifist to the point of being ineffective. It's actually fitting that the one person who achieves true balance is the one teachings was from someone who ended up being on both extremes.

This finale went through several variations.
In the first draft, the finale was an episode told from the POV of Vader. he would be hunting someone which would be revealed to be Maul. The next draft was very similar to this episode except after the Ahsoka and Vader fight, Maul would fight Vader. Eventually Vader would defeat him, telling Maul "This is for Qui-Gon" before killing him. This was scraped because of time constraints and because the writers came to the conclusion that it was out of character for Vader to say that line. The next variation included the same events as this episode except that when Ahsoka strikes his mask, Vader stabs her at the same time. The last thing that Ahsoka would see before she died would've been Anakins face. Dave felt that would be too dark and took into account the emotional reaction that Ashley Eckstein would have to this. In the final version of the finale he makes Ahsokas fate ambiguous. You can see Dave Filoni talking about these variations during a QnA for the S2 Finale and during the Ahsoka Panel at Celebration 2017.

Briefly after release, in 2016 or so, Dave Filoni confirmed this was the ONE time that ANAKIN resurfaced from Darth Vader. For just a brief moment, when he looked on Ahsoka with his own eye, and said “Ahsoka”, he was Anakin. But the his anger and hatred took over and he was Vader again with “then you will die”
This was the first time someone had cut a piece of Vader’s mask off, so, when nearly the exact same thing happened in the Kenobi show, I had serious trouble enjoying it as much as I should’ve, because it felt like they copied the homework exactly from this show. Later, I’ve accepted that it’s ok to have Ahsoka cut off one piece of his mask, and Kenobi the other half of his mask. But when it happened that first time, and Ahsoka says “I won’t leave you, not this time” it broke me
The final 2 minutes of the ep are insane. Hera learning that Kanan is blind, Morai (the owl who embodies “the daughter” and follows Ahsoka) was circling near Vader. Rex stepped out to see his best friend Ahsoka did not return from the mission, so he thinks she is dead. Ezra is teased to turn to the dark side. WHAT AN ENDING

Malachor is a throwback to the Knights of the Old Republic game. It is where Revan defeats the Mandalorians during the Mandalorian War against the Republic, about 3,000 years before the Rebellion. He used his newly acquired Sith abilities to perform a ritual that completely wiped out all life on Malachor, which was the Mandalorian's home planet (the original Mandalore was destroyed long ago from all the wars they wage). Surviving Mandalorians became rogue mercenaries until Canderous Ordo (your Mando companion in KotOR) brings them together to restore the Mandalorians as a people again. Contradictory to this, 300 years later (during The Old Republic game era) the Mandalorians were no longer a people, but a creed - open to anyone who proves themselves worthy of being called a Mandalorian. Mostly bounty hunters and mercenaries, but also anyone who could contribute to other aspects of civilization.
The creation of these events in the timeline falls between the acquisition of the franchise by Disney and their retcon of the timeline. Filoni loves his easter eggs, and this one is a huge one, for the fans that know its signifigance.

Great reaction guys! On Maul's "downfall" - first off, there's a good chance he's not gone for good... - and second, one of the main traits about Maul since his introduction is his arrogance. Look at how Obi-Wan defeats him in Phantom Menace; he was essentially gloating and that allowed Obi-Wan to get the jump on him. It's a recurring theme that Maul gets overconfident and underestimates his opponents, and doesn't learn from those lessons. Hence why Kanan is able to beat him through his concentration and connection to the Force. Look out for that to keep reoccurring as you explore more Star Wars material!

I was always waiting for that scene where either Rex or Ahsoka was in the room while he said that, & where they let Kaiden have it in regard to THEIR experiences: how some Jedi generals treated the Clones , how the Clones were treated in general post war, Ahsokas trial & how the only one who went to bat for her was Anakin.

My favorite detail about the bit where Ahsoka cuts open Vader's mask is that, in doing his voice distortion, they had James Earl Jones AND Matt Lanter (the guy who voiced Anakin in the Clone Wars) do the lines. The first time Vader says "Ahsoka," it's James' voice over Matt's. The second time, it's Matt's over James'. Then, when Vader says "Then you will die," it's just Matt
(Also, I like how, in the Kenobi show, Obi-Wan cut open the left side of Vader's mask when Ahsoka cut open the right side, showing how they weren't enough to bring Anakin back but Luke was the one to get the mask all the way off)

These last two episodes are still peak, goosebumps episodes for me. I love Ahsoka and the relationship she had with Ani, so this meeting is one I had been waiting for forever. Just the raw tension of that relationship, his selfhatred, offering her a place first before knowing he'd have to kill her when she declined.
I want to see the first meeting between Luke and Ahsoka, at which point he can inform her of Anakin in the end. Force Ghost Anakin making an appearance to her would also make me cry.
P.S. The helicopter stuff is a bit over the top, but it's not that ridiculous when you get used to it. It requires the inquisitor saber, so like Maul can't use his the same way.
I think you should rewatch that last brief fight, it wasn't his arc going down, it was Kanan showing perseverance after being blinded. Maul tripped on his overestimation of his own skills. They also showed him at the end flying away.

The finale shows that Ahsoka has a low chance of surviving -- and with the Light Side bird in the scene, it is implied that she may have died. The shock and defeat, not only of the audience but also for Ezra, pushes us all into despair and loss. For Ezra, that looks like shame, guilt, and a capitulation to the Dark Side. Big emotions

This is just one many cases where anakin ends up accidently creating problems for vader and the empire. Saw Garrea is one of those accidents that turned into a problem for the empire. Anakins kids were one of the biggest accidents that end up being some of the biggest problems for vader and the empire.

Since you like many others were surprised at the whole "flying with spinning lightsabers" thing the inquisitors do, I thought I'd pass on the canon explanation - the lightsaber blades don't generate lift, but there are hidden repulsorlifts (the same mechanism that makes speeders and such hover) built into the hilt. The blade spinning is, like many things the inquisitors do, all for show/for the intimidation factor.
That explanation sort of works for me, but it is kind of silly in a world where safer alternatives such as jetpacks and jet boots exist. Ah well.
