Yeah, I spent 6 years in a PhD program, so did my brother, and his wife, and I've been teaching for 5 years. University politics IS academia. Cliques and mentorships and RAships IS academia. The journal system IS academia. It's like a giant echo chamber, but much worse, because of the institutional systems in place that reinforce it, because of the role academia serves to the broader political-socioeconomic system. Its primary purpose is to act as an ideological litmus test on careers with high prestige, social influence, leadership, and (sometimes) high pay, like politicians, bureaucrats, lawyers, doctors, scientists, and professors. Its secondary purpose is to produce the "propaganda that propagandizes the propagandists," if you follow.
