    I’ve been bought so many gifts over the years that I’ve never used or used only once. It’s crazy. The one gadget thing I use that I actually like is an electric potato peeler. You pop the potato on the spikes hit a button and it spins around and peels them in one go, usually. It’s pretty sweet and saves a lot of time, and gives them a cool texture too. You could actually make curly fries with it if you wanted.

    For me, I'd be happy with a good quality large cutting board.
    Knives are personal, but I'd be happy with any Japabese knife.
    I think a gift giver should have a reasonable grasp of what the cook in their life likes to cook.
    I agree, single use objects just take up valuable cupboard space.
    Great video!

      Thank you! When in doubt, a cutting board is a great gift.

    Something i have thought about a couple of times. Some old school cook books are spiral bound which means it stays open easier. Why did we go away from that?

    • @KnifewearKnives
      @KnifewearKnives  24 дня назад +1

      That's a great question, I wish all cookbooks were spiral bound. I think it's a matter of aesthetics, as many cookbooks are designed with coffee tables and bookshelves in mind.

    I disagree with the pans. Personally a nonstick pan (cheap) will better perform for delicate tasks than carbon or cast for lower heat applications then (delicate fish or eggs as an example) then you have your stainless/cast/carbon for everything else. Just my personal take as I typically go for stainless over cast or carbon due to cooking high acidic foods consistently but my carbon and cast pans are also top notch! Great vid though!

      The amazing thing is how utterly reasonable it is. You're actually paying less by volume than you would at Safeway and getting stuff that's miles better. Silk road is the best.

    Great video! One note: I too would hate to receive a spice blend as a gift, but Burlap & Barrel (the brand that AD recommended) makes really good single spices too. I love their smoked paprika, and they do a range of other unusual chili powders

    On cookbooks, a great cookbook you can read is The Food Lab by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt. Tons of stories and he really delves into why certain techniques are better than others.

    The chef press things are amazing. I use for grilled cheese (wonderful), browning ground meat for spaghetti sauce, even browning on any protein. I haven’t tried putting them on top of roast potatoes, but I suspect that would work well too. Other Christmas gifts I would include is the king tweezer tongs. Most folks don’t have and would love, I think. And for people who like to be super organized those mise en place boxes are awesome. Also good for Raclette or hot pot to prep ingredients and keep in fridge.

    Hey guys, big fan here.
    Just wanted to ask you a sharpening question I have soured the net and could not find a good answer. I have some western style chefs knives and even have one Chinese made "Japanese style" knife. Before I consider getting my first proper Japanese Knife i wanted to practice sharpening on the knives i have.
    now my question is, should i get accurate results sharpening them on 300,1000, and 6000 grit diamond stones? Diamond stones are all that is accessible to me as importing wetstones is very expensive for where I live. Let me know if there's some specific tips to sharpen on a diamond plated stone.

    • @KnifewearKnives
      @KnifewearKnives  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hey, absolutely! Those stones should work great. Personally, I would stop at 1,000 for your current knives as the softer steel will likely dull quite fast at 6,000, whereas 1,000 will create a more durable edge.
      I haven't used diamond stones personally, but I imagine the technique is fairly similar!

      The thing is the Le Creuset enamels are just unnecessary given how good the Lodge stuff is for a very reasonable price... The Lodge 3 qt casserole (EC3CC43) at $89 USD is maybe the best bang-for-the-buck pan of any kind money can buy.

  • @bloodgain

    Don't undersell the Baggu bags. They pack down very small, so it's easy to keep one in your everyday carry bag always ready to go, and they get great reviews. Not much of a real gift, but it'd make a good stocking stuffer.

    Completely disagree with the nespresso take, you can get way better flavor for your money by just having a proconsumer coffee set up with either an espresso machine or a aeropress with fresh beans by a local roaster who understands fair trade practices. Nespresso is literally just a Keurig pod machine but two times the cost and with the same credibility of terrible fair trade practices for growers. If you are translating that into a gift for someone you love? Just give them a good espresso machine or even a breville bambino. Or, just give them a fresh bag of coffee (pre ground or whole) from your local roaster. Amazing video though otherwise.

    • @johnmay9598
      @johnmay9598 6 месяцев назад +1

      Well except that Bambino costs like $400.
      The reality is that the aeropress is simply the best bang-for-buck option in terms of cost, time and effort required, regardless of whether you care about good coffee or not... IMO, anyway.

    • @KnifewearKnives
      @KnifewearKnives  6 месяцев назад

      Well said, that totally makes sense! These days it's aeropress or bust for me.

    • @marklulala
      @marklulala 6 месяцев назад

    • @benlink202forever
      @benlink202forever 6 месяцев назад

      @@johnmay9598 Completely agree on the aeropress, its just a great option all around for on the go and budget brewing. From where I live, I see bambino going for 250-300 around there. Almost in the same cost range, so why not just spend a little extra for it? However, the problem I see is not having a proper grinder before. So in all honesty, any mid to high end grinder is probably going to help with money efficiency compared to buying an espresso machine without a grinder to work with it.

    • @HerrFinsternis
      @HerrFinsternis 6 месяцев назад

      The aeropress is a great coffee maker. If you're looking at that a mokkapot sits in the same price bracket and depending on how you like your coffee that could be the way to go.
