    I’m trying to find someone that’s rooted a ficus alii petite from a cutting or leaf....have you attempted it. I know all ficus family should be able to root the same. I’ve attempted growing from a cutting in soil and in water but only one in soil ever sprouted roots (out of about 25 cuttings) and survived but took years to grow to even 2 ft then all of a sudden this last 3 months it’s more than doubled in height.
    I recently had a sad situation with my massive 4 ft wide approx 7 ft tall alii petite that’s about 8 years old and it lost more than half its lush leaves (due to the root blocking the drainage hole and it getting clogged full of rain water) . After waiting a few months to see it it would burst back which it didn’t, I decided to radically cut it right back to just the trunk n stems...I know ficus usually shoot and grow lush again but I’m just hoping it’s not kind of stunted at the height I cut it back to which was half the size.
    I’ve taken about 15 cuttings all different sizes and planted some in soil and a few in water but they all still have many leaves on so I’ll remove the leaves in the morning for better chance of sprouting roots. I did do what another Indian guy did on you tube and shave the outer bark off the ends of some cuttings in hope it sprouts better... I know your post is old but reply if you can. Cheers from Perth west Australia

    All I do to any ficus is , make sure I just take off enough from my original plant so idc if its an old or new branch because if the old branch roots it will root really well , further more even if it doesn't root it wont matter because I wont loose anything important because it was waste to begin with.
    I never even use any rooting powder I just stick it in a propagation mini greenhouse for seedlings with bonsai soil that has springtails for mould control and after a month I get to see my results.

    Thanks nice video and nice teaching I'll try it out, I have lots of streams like over 30 streams altogether , how many you have to put in one pot to grow into plants ?? Please tell me am really confused and don't know about this keep more coming thank you

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 лет назад +4

      I normally put about three or four in each container, mainly because I don't have enough containers for them all to have their own. I leave them in the water until they have a good root system and then transfer them to a pot with soil. Usually I just put one plant in each pot. You can put more than one in each pot as it will fill the pot faster this way, but it will mean you will have lots of small plants forming a bush instead of one strong plant forming a small tree.

    great vid, thanks!
    quick question, how do you get the trunks so thick?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  8 лет назад +6

      I let the plant grow quite large and then cut it back to a smaller size. Allowing the plant to grow large makes it quickly thicken up its trunk. Cutting it back makes the trunk appear larger as the branches are shorter and its a smaller plant.

    So I put one cutting in soil and one in water (1 month ago) and the one in soil seems to have rooted and just made a new leaf while the one in water still just has white bumps on the stem and nothing more. Did I do something wrong?

    Can I place the fresh cuttings to root under weak lighting in a tent? It's very weak, cheap fluorescent tubes. The tent provides mild warmth and humidity

    Thanks a lot ....What is the most appropriate time for Ficus growing by this way?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  8 лет назад +3

      It depends on where you live, if you live in a hot country then it doesn't matter too much as you can do it an any time of year. If you live somewhere further north which has dark cold winters then its best to take the cuttings in Spring or Summer.

    Why do you cut the leaves with scissors? Is it important to leave the base of the leave on the nod? Thank you

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  6 лет назад +2

      I use scissors because the stem is very thin and delicate and so if I pulled the leaf off it may damage the stem. The small piece of leaf stalk left will fall off after a few days.

    I had put few cuttings of Ficus Benjamina in a water glass and about a month later they started producing roots. When the plants had roots about 5 mm in length I planted them in a pot with compost. About 3 or 4 days later the leaves turned yellow and withered away. The plant did not make it......why is this and how do I overcome it next time ?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 лет назад +5

      I think the roots were not long enough. They need to be at least 4cm long, so next time leave them in the water for longer. I've had some survive for over a year in water. Also when you transplant them into compost make sure the roots don't stick together too much and you may also need to spray the leaves if its a sunny location.

    • @jacklarus
      @jacklarus 4 года назад

      Is it detrimental for the roots to be too long? I have two cuttings that have been rooting in a jar of water for about eight months and they have a lot of big roots. I'm worried that moving them to soil at this point will shock them.

    Hello. How do you prune the ficus benjamina without drying out the branches? I have one but I have a hard time with branches drying out. thank you.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 года назад +3

      This usually happens if you prune the branches on the lower part of the plant. If you prune just one or two branches which are already weak they will just die because the tree will just relocate its growth to its other branches. If you want the lower weaker branches to continue growing after pruning you also have to prune the other branches on the plant. strong growing branches at the top of a plant will stop lower down branches from growing unless their growing tips are also pruned.

    Hi I have one more question for you , does the cutting work in compost without rooting in water ???? Or only in water as you showed thank you please do reply soon thanks

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 лет назад +2

      Yes they do also work in compost, but I find they root better in water and you can see the roots growing.

  • @myurewde

    What is the gree solution?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 лет назад +2

      Its water, but its gone green because of the algae growing in it. when the cuttings have lots of roots I add a few drops of feed into the water to help them grow, but this also encourages the algae to grow.
