As soon as someone tries to do something different to actually help these inmates, it gets messed up. This is a step in actual prison reform.

@@asfasfaf5365 you don't need any reform if your parents teach you that breaking the law will get you put in jail. If someone kills one of your family members do you just think oh don't put them in jail just give them some reform classes. And then that person gets out again just to kill someone else because they're not afraid to go to jail. You're basically saying to make jail a vacation from life. You're also telling people they could rob people for money until they get caught and then they think well it's not that big of a deal living in jail is just like living in the free world except I don't have to pay rent utilities medical bills and I basically do a couple of months in jail living for free and then when I get out I just start robbing people again until I get caught oh no I have to go to jail and live for free for a couple of months and then just repeat the same process over and over. Sorry but by making jail and easy place to live will not keep anybody from breaking the law more because they're not afraid of it.

Fun fact the King James version of the Bible was finalized in 1611, 180 years before America ratified the 8th amendment forbidden cruel and unusual punishment in jails.
Biblically speaking, prison equaled torture. That's why there's all that fire and brimstone talk in the Bible, but it's really just talking about jail.
It's just that jail has changed since then. We are more humane today, Even though the Bible seems to be treating criminals and sinners like animals.

I've visited a county jail somewhere in Northern Florida a few years ago. This jail had inmates who can roam freely in the lobby where they receive visitations from friends and family. Some inmates were allowed to leave the jail so they can go to work at their jobs. The jail food was prepared and cooked by a local diner and it had a home cooked taste with lots of love. I know this because I was there when I had car trouble and I ate their food. If the the department of corrections can punish prisoners but treat them like human beings at the same time, I believe there may be rehabilitation in their future. But the prisoners will need to do their part by owning up for what they did and behave like if they had home training in their youth.

I mean I think it’s definitely a good idea. But punish the ones who do wrong. The ones who know how to act let them participate in the program. Don’t punish everyone. Being locked down 23/1 is ridiculous. You already in jail for the crime, if you want to change their mind and make them better keeping them locked up behind 4 walls for that long isn’t the answer. I don’t care if they could just have 8 hours. But 1 hour of freedom is stupid, it’s like they want them to keep acting out and hurting each other.

The two jails in my county and neighboring county in Pittsburgh now require everyone to spend their first 72 hrs in complete solitude. No books or notebooks, nothing. They get one hr to shower or call people if money is put on their phone account but that’s it. And if you have to transfer from one jail to the other you start your 72 hrs in solitude over again. Sometimes you may have a cell mate to talk to but that’s it. No matter your charge. My fiance just had to do it and spent the 72 hrs in solitude at both places since he was a transfer. And they would not give him his suboxone medication so he had to withdrawal at the first jail and you’re not allowed a cell mate if you withdraw so he just sat and looked at the wall for 3 damn days then fortunately got a cell mate for the 3 more solitary days at the other jail

Watch this show if you have not. This is based on many psychological experiments with the results being applied all together in one new experiment. They managed to have the inmates enforcing the rules of the prison and indoctrinating new prisoners into their system who were brought into the experiment. This needs to continue because the results clearly show reform in those who are capable of it while also identifying people who need extra help or cannot be reformed.

As an outsider to the US court system, I really think putting responsibilities on the inmates gave them a sense of purpose, the way they governed themselves and looked after each other by the end, kinda showed that these lost souls just needed some structure in their lives and were capable of being good people. It's amazing what happens when you don't treat prisoners like cattle and encourage them to make a better society

It’s a waste of American tax dollars to have people sit in a jail cell locked up for 23 hours everyday. I rather have my dollars help rehabilitate these people and prepare them to come back into our society and hopefully they don’t re-offend when they do get out. The progress of this experiment was very interesting to watch. It was very enlightening. I suggest people to watch the whole series.

I wanna say right now I just got done watching the series and all the credit in the beginning belongs to the sheriff for having the idea and giving the inmates a chance to have the doors open watching them grow together and getting to see their individual stories was a moving experience I believe what he did actually gave them a chance to build relationships with their families and learn to communicate together better it was hurtful to see the people that got hurt .at the end of the day they came together old school and younger they really growed i loved it bravo sherrif

America can't keep jailing status quo!
This experiment opens up an opportunity to explore other models of incarceration, like the penal system in Europe.
This experiment is historical and a good idea!

23 hours in a tiny room everyday! If that jail cell gets a little narrower, it is going to be a coffin! It’s like these inmates are sentenced to death for 23hrs everyday! In what world is this rehabilitation?!

The program gives people something to look forward to while actually correcting the mindsets of these individuals. Isn’t that the point of these “correction facilities” what’s being corrected if someone who had murder and someone who has a speeding ticket will probably be in the same jail under the same conditions.

what we have been doing is not working. This experiment provided a glimmer of hope in a hopeless system. Yes, they must be isolated from society. But if you people serving 20 years, you need to provide some humanity for them. For the shorter terms, you need to show them ways to fit back into society. Complain about it, but provide an alternative or shhh.

If it works and makes the inmates act accordingly then that makes the staff workers have a better shift. As much as it makes sense to behave and u won't get sent to jail... once they are there they figured out that acting right got them freedom. It doesn't make sense but it does. Sometimes u have to physically show them before they mentally get it.
