  • Carnival in Malaga is unique because of its multicultural, colorful and spontaneous character when celebrations are held in both the Historic Quarter and in the other districts of the city.
You can find a bit of everything: from parades for children and adults to meetings of groups of singers, bands of street musicians, parades, quartets and choirs in the Teatro Cervantes in a Carnival singing contest that attracts contestants from the whole region.
The carnival runs from Sunday to Sunday, leading up to Lent, filled with music and events, including the vibrant Grand Parade following the proclamation and election of the Carnival's God and Goddess.
The city centre comes alive with musical performances and the Battle of Flowers, showering the streets with confetti and paper.
The Battle of Flowers is a historical reenactment of when the working class threw flowers at the nobility riding in carriages during the carnival. Bags of flower petals and over a ton of confetti are distributed, and participants throw them at each other to recreate this historic moment symbolizing class struggle.
Visitors are also treated to cartons of fried anchovies for tasting. Afterward, the Burial of the Anchovy takes place at sunset, bringing the Carnival of Malaga to a close.
The Burial of the Anchovy:A unique tradition, this event features a parade to the Malagueta beaches, culminating in the burning of an effigy laden with current event references, symbolizing the end of the carnival.
This fish, which is one of the main symbols of Malaga, is decorated differently each year, again in a topical manner. Once at the beach, fireworks are set off while the anchovy is set alight and “buried” at the shore.
the Burial of the Anchovy takes place at sunset, bringing the Carnival of Malaga to a close.
the Malaga Carnival is an event of significant importance in the calendar and is a date that is celebrated in many parts of the world.
