- Before the Batcave and Robin, the Joker and the Batmobile ... there was Zero Year. The Riddler has plunged Gotham City into darkness. How will a young Dark Knight bring his beloved hometown from the brink of chaos and madness and back into the light? From the critically acclaimed, New York Times #1 best-selling creative team of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, Batman Vol. 5: Zero Year--Dark City is the concluding volume to Batman's origin story, as you've never seen it before.
▸ Who Is Batman: Batman is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, and debuted in the 27th issue of the comic book Detective Comics on March 30, 1939. In the DC Universe continuity, Batman is the alias of Bruce Wayne, a wealthy American playboy, philanthropist, and industrialist who resides in Gotham City. Batman's origin story features him swearing vengeance against criminals after witnessing the murder of his parents Thomas and Martha as a child, a vendetta tempered with the ideal of justice. He trains himself physically and intellectually, crafts a bat-inspired persona, and monitors the Gotham streets at night. Kane, Finger, and other creators accompanied Batman with supporting characters, including his sidekicks Robin and Batgirl; allies Alfred Pennyworth, James Gordon, and Catwoman; and foes such as the Penguin, the Riddler, Two-Face, and his archenemy, the Joker.
Kane conceived Batman in early 1939 to capitalize on the popularity of DC's Superman; although Kane frequently claimed sole creation credit, Finger substantially developed the concept from a generic superhero into something more bat-like. The character received his own spin-off publication, Batman, in 1940. Batman was originally introduced as a ruthless vigilante who frequently killed or maimed criminals, but evolved into a character with a stringent moral code and strong sense of justice. Unlike most superheroes, Batman does not possess any superpowers, instead relying on his intellect, fighting skills, and wealth. The 1960s Batman television series used a camp aesthetic, which continued to be associated with the character for years after the show ended. Various creators worked to return the character to his darker roots in the 1970s and 1980s, culminating with the 1986 miniseries The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller.
DC has featured Batman in many comic books, including comics published under its imprints such as Vertigo and Black Label. The longest-running Batman comic, Detective Comics, is the longest-running comic book in the United States. Batman is frequently depicted alongside other DC superheroes, such as Superman and Wonder Woman, as a member of organizations such as the Justice League and the Outsiders. In addition to Bruce Wayne, other characters have taken on the Batman persona on different occasions, such as Jean-Paul Valley / Azrael in the 1993-1994 "Knightfall" story arc; Dick Grayson, the first Robin, from 2009 to 2011; and Jace Fox, son of Wayne's ally Lucius, as of 2021. DC has also published comics featuring alternate versions of Batman, including the incarnation seen in The Dark Knight Returns and its successors, the incarnation from the Flashpoint (2011) event, and numerous interpretations from Elseworlds stories.

After watching Matt Reeves' The Batman, I decided to go through Batman's comics and seeing that Reeves pulled Riddler's flood plan from this comic is so interesting to see.
And this is why The Riddler is my favorite villain in all of dc.
When was the last time Rob did:
"Rob corps.....
Men lemme tell u sum...
Man lemme tell u sum!!! "
Kite Man's origin was soo good
Ali Mulk hell yeah!
Kite Man! Hell yeah!
The Riddler & Penguin always been my favorite Batman villains. They never get enough exposure.
The Riddler is the best thing to come out of DC Rebirth.
This is New 52 isn’t it?
People arent intresting in war of jokes and riddles, the origan of KITE MAN is what people are really excited about
I'm happy just to see Catwoman wearing her old purple outfit from the Jim Balent run. That costume is fantastic!
HELL YEAH!
Hell yeah
The riddler: a guy that wears skin tight suites and ask people dumb questions as a weapon
The Archimedes principle isn't so hard.
To simplify it a little:
You know that you weigh less underwater. But how much less?
That's explained by the Archimedes Principle. Basically. The weight volume of water displaced by your body being immersed in water is the same as your reduction in weight. The decrease in weight is proportional to the density of the fluid.
You can go further and apply the logic to any fluid (including air).
'War of Jokes and Riddles'.
Hell Yeah!
i like riddler cuz he has the british chop beard
In Batman hush the Riddler scheme is really grand
+Cooper gerrish oh I forgot he was behind that story lol.
I love that picture from secret city.... of his first night where he was like publicly made aware of, where he's swingin with the dude in his arm, It perfectly mirrors and looks JUST like detective Comics #27, the very first Batman comic ever where it all started, I love how zero year pays homage to that
Dude you go into such precise detail regarding these stories that I feel that I don't even have to read them :-D. Keep up the awesome work.
I don't know if I like the comics or robs storytelling more...
Gordon sporting a wicked mohawk @5:51
The only riddle Riddler needs to solve is why the hell he doesn't shave off those lousy mutton chops. Come on, it's 2017!
DoomRulz You tripping. Those chops are sexy AF.
So the muttonchops are ridiculous, but the kelly green suit with matching bowler hat and gold cane are understated fashion genius?
because Nygma in this comic is obviously Irish?
That and how did Batman survive that explosion in the museum when he made certain there were no exits. Come on Nygma, that was like 20 years ago and you're _still_ shouting about it!
DoomRulz tell that to wolverine
Will u cover kingdom come?
RE: Lucius Fox.
No worries mate; "BOW TIES ARE COOL," Dr Who, (Matt Smith.)
This take on the character of Edward Nigma also harks back in many ways to the Jim Carey version; which I personally though was brilliant; although a lot of people seemed not agree at the time.
War of Jokes and Riddles is so nice!!! I have never been so hyped for the Riddler!
The art here is amazing
Was anyone else shocked to see Catwoman wearing her old purple spandex out by Jim Balent in _Batman_ #28? I thought both DC and Marvel ditched spandex that seeing her wearing her old tights was pretty nice. I miss these old costumes.
Writer doesn't understand it's not the impact that damages the organs by way of hitting it really hard--which bones can protect from, it's the inertia of the organs that smash them INTO your bones and other organs, leading to rapid shift in momentum (or high impulse) resulting in extreme force that do. So thicker bones do shit.
As in the bones cannot really protect you from the force because Newton's Laws. Shielding are only good at stopping things that penetrates you or ripping you apart.
Though it's possible that the bone is so thick that it holds everything in place...then you can't move any more or breath or beat your heart any more lol
Bruces hair on this comic is atrocious lol
viviciuszn His mouth is no better.
viviciuszn all the art in this looks like shit lol
i hate everything
Yah it's pretty bad
Greg Capullo is great
viviciuszn I like it
Rob bro I can't wait until you do secret empire #7
Did you notice that Gordon's partner was Jim Corrigan(the specter)? He said "stop this corrigan!" Or something... is this canon or just an Easter egg?
Bruce Wayne blaming gordon partially for his parents death explains a lot of the interactions they have . The way Batman is so cold to him , and also why while commisioner gordon is still talking batman will just vanish with gordon still talking to him. Kinda giving a little disrespect but at the same time NOT closing the door on Commisioner Gordon , but keeping him at arms length.
"Bones growing uncontrollably"
Maybe they should stop drinking Bone Hurting Juice
These Batman New 52 stories were almost like horror stories...
Rob man, I can't stand reading comics much, I appreciate the lore, you deliver the lore in a smooth and comprehensive format. Thank you
The Killing Joke or at least a variance of it, will always be the definitive Joker origin for me.
I feel like Rob inspired the new BATMAN : HUSH movie in this video. 8:50 - 9:10
I appreciate your Fine Work. Thanks
So, once again, Batman kills a guy.
Rob please do the Red Hood and the outlaws rebirth stories coming out each week... its awesome
Rob. Your videos are the best man
Does anyone else love the fact that the Batmobile is a stick?!
BUGS BUNNY VS deadpool
I like the Riddler. I mean I don't agree with him at all. His premises are sound but his conclusions are insane. What I like so much about the Riddler is a recurring theme in which Batman will often say a caveat about how pathetic Nygma has become, or how many resources Batman has at his disposal and then finishes with "and yet still the Riddler almost got me" hahahaha! Never underestimate the Riddler and "Brains over brawn, every damn time!"
Kite Man
Hell yeah
Just when I was bored Rob drops a new video.
I love all your videos so easy to catch up since I read the less popular comic companies
Thanks Rob. Love your videos!
It was so out of character for Riddler to try to suffocate a baby in this comic
Fate/Apocrypha can wait
“All it takes is one bad day” that’s deep . Which means any of us can be the joker.. that’s DEEP I feel like I unlocked some treasure chest 😂😂
I am looking so forward to this story ark! I hope it is really as good as it sounds like it will be. Rob corps.!
What's going on, Rob? This is guys.
Thank you because of this it makes so much more sense
BASICALLY this is the BEST story coming outta New 52
Boogie Thug Rose the whole run was the best thing comin out of New52..... but Endgame was better. The joker story was insane. Prob the best ever. Death of the family and then Endgame were just Epic af.
Dude !!! You need to do Earth One : Batman
like ASAP ! XD
Dark City was also a good movie too.
Bruce has distinct scars on his lip and chin...wears a cowl that doesn't hide said scars. Gordon doesn't notice said distinctive scars despite having seen them on Bruce multiple times...doesn't put two and two together...great detective work. -_-
It's because gordon knew bruce before batman so he would never believe billionaire bruce wayne would be batman so he doesn't notice obvious clues
You should do a video on who trained batsman. Because idk if I correct but zero year is after his training to be batman. Tht the may have been reckoned.
Is there a follow up to this video? Unsure how the device attached to the riddler was used by Batman to reboot the grid…
hi rob your channel is awesome
What's with the private vid in the flash play list? Cmon guy! Don't leave us hanging
This month is fuckin golden
Thanks for sharing another storyline with us . I love listening to them . But , as a piece of friendly editorial advice from a fan , please consider your very frequent use of the the word " basically " . Every time you feel the urge to use that word please try to come up with a different word or phrase to keep your narrative cleaner and smoother . Peace !
Why doesn't the riddler just sign up to be a teacher?
Hey rob, love your work, please do a video explaining how the ultimates may be introduced to the principal marvel universe cuz i've seen some pictures of them pls
You're great Rob-I'm a long-time fan-but you've got to get more than one style of awkward canned-laugh.
i already become your subscriber since yyou only got 300 subscriber n this is amazing rob now you got 1 milion
can i ask something rob?
can you make explanation about GREAT EVIL BEAST in dc universe?
because the character is said for beyond creation of the presence it will be great if you can explain to rob corp what great evil beast is n Lucifer morning star n michael demiurge n ellain belloc in dc comic they are the strongest entity before the presence
please make explanation about these character
thanks
Hey bro, been subscribed for a couple years ... but I can't find the thanos quest, I think you did one.... but I'm not sure
Rob can u do something on the character of Tyrant hes so badass can we just get a how to kill or a story about him i mean he hasnt appeared in many issues anyway BUT MAAN!!! is he awesome
I guess this timeline/origin means that Riddler was operating as Riddler before Joker had shown up using that name?
Rob did you cover riddler reformed? I been wanting to pick up those comics cause I loved the idea but don't know much about it
Damn.....Batman would take a knee.
Why do people say the riddler is an idiot he took over an entire city
can two face do that?
Riddler is hella fine. And that's coming from me and I'm not the biggest fan of riddles.
Hooker Legs same.
I've never even seen any other origin besides the vat of chemicals thing. It's in an even older comic book than the killing joke, obviously, and it's in the 89 movie. But what other origins have been in the actual comic books?
Obviously in Batman 89 he wasnt the red hood, but he was a criminal. I'm not really counting many of the movies because the Dark Knight Joker had multiple, the one in Suicide Squad seems to be Jason Todd or maybe the Haha on the Robin suit was Joker mocking him about that, but that's whatever, and then the Joker movie is one off and on it's own and not connected to anything. It's hardly even the Joker. But at the end it's left to the audience to wonder if any of it even happened.
So I am a bit confused about rebirth vs new 52. Does new 52 tie into Dc Rebirth's continuity?
One issue issue I see is this glosses over year one
Invincible and irredemable rob...infinite let me tell you something with both books
Can't find a video for savage city. Doesn't Seem to be in the play list
I'm waiting for hot wings!
War of Jokes And riddles Kinda of Explained....eh Rob?
What's the deal with the red hoods leg at 1:32?
Rob what do you think about green lantern rebirth right now with the return of volthoom and the original 7 lanterns
Did the third part of this series get made? Or did it get taken down?
"Corrigan." Gordon in the past mentioned that name. The Spectre?
Anyone else try and solve the sister riddle before the answer was given?
wired sound cut at about 17 min
"comics explained, to the best of my ability"
Hey Rob, have you done a video on Romulus from Marvel? Also, The story, Dark Knight Metal, which explores Bruce Wayne being actual meta human?
Or is it in the middle or not connected at all
DC should do a 1930's Batman, get back to the beginning.
Proper and Grandiose
Wait 'Corrigan' isn't that the spectre??
Fucking love this Riddler !!!
Cratos ZeusI have read all batman series n I still don’t understand how the joker just came back to life did I miss something Is this the doings of mr oz? Please anyone help. I thought he was healed like Bruce was with a fresh start they both died in the same place, then we saw a man who looked just like a healed joker they even had the same color eyes he even says he was hurt there n can not remember his past either.
Wow...I had no idea his name was Edward Nigma, lol.
fascinating.
Love you Rob
Basically
Riddler: *kills low IQ people*
Me: *sweats*
Robert if you somehow see this, please do more iron stories and more x men stuff, like maybe legacy
Damn bro only one video a day ? 💔
Hello Rob. I would like to make a video on Oblivion's part in Secret Wars. I mean the Beyonders killed Everything and destroyed thousands of universes. Oblivion represents nothing so i believe he grew stronger with these? Is it possible that the Beyonders are emissaries of Oblivion? Could it be also possible that Death grew stronger as well...these entities kill thousands of things.
"so what I'm gonna do here..."
