- Customer's review of Harbor Freight temporary garage. I bought this temporary garage at our local Harbor Freight store, it's made really well.
It has freed up our main garage, and allows us to store a vehicle outside, and keep it protected from the elements.

I bought 5 of those those garages from Harbor Freight and 1 From PEP Boys, that one was bigger and better also , but I was glad I had all of them, they were very suitable what I needed them for
I have had 3 of these now, the first lasted nearly 5 years before the tarp was just worn out. The next two were destroyed in a MASSIVE WIND STORM and I pieced the two together to make one... with one BIG improvement. I got some X plumbing PVC fittings, and made cross bars in the roof section on both sides in the middle to keep the snow from sinking down between the rails and screwed the base to treated deckboards. once the base was solid, i went to the local salvation army and got a few pairs of skis, and some EYE bolts from the hardware store. Now I can pull it around the yard with the lawn tractor without pulling it apart, and there is NO way this one (made from the remains of 2) will get wrecked in a wind or snow storm.
I would like to mention to people considering this garage is you can buy replacement ends and top tarps from Harbor Freight, add /parts to the URL to get there. The tarp top last about 2 years, then water will start coming thru.
Thanks for the heads up
Nice
Use a tarp on the floor ...moisture from the ground will cause inside problems on your things or underneath your car...Nice job with the screws.
This is exactly what I did after the video 👍
John Smith For real though what damage is this gonna cause that driving in hard rain won't lol
Any way to make the back half a door also?? Or is it a continuous piece that's connected to the roof & sides?
This question is my only hold up from buying this thing
@@tluva1020 You can buy long HD self-adhesive zippers and make the back like the front. That's what I'm doing.
Self tapping screws are a great idea. Thanks

Bought one today an it's a pain in the ass to put together but once I finally got it together I like it pretty good an it will protect my mower this winter hopefully

Good video. We have two (the 10x10 & 10x17) and love both. We've had 5+ inches of snow on ours with no sign of failing. The 10x17 is the best of the two. It's taller and has a lot more room.
Besides the crappy Velcro for the door, this one has held up through a lot of wind and snow storms
Ummmm no one seems to think about using the ratchet binders to hold the straps from getting sucked up! Screwing the sloppy fit tubing together is a good idea. We used electrical tape. I am not sure about your yellow brackets for the lower rails but ours were supplied with round holes...AND, get this! carriage bolts, so tightening the was a non-starter. and OH yeah FORGET the ropes, they are not included. We assemble the upper unit and dragged the canopy over the short lift and then worked each side elevation one pole at a time.
Thanks for watching
Fantastic review
Thanks for watching.
i just put one up last 2-3 years and nothing but good reviews about them. Better than 200 a month for a garage. Ill just run an extension to my battery tender
I have had good luck with mine. The Velcro strips that hold the door up are worn out. So I have to figure out an easy way to hold it up
The stone quarries will sell crushed stone and dust mixed however you’ll probably be better off to go to a contractor who will deliver that stone for you tell him what you want to do with it and they will know the specific grade to get you they can also come in with a shoot on the end of the truck and custom deliver that right on the spot,,,After you get it delivered roll it with a lawn roller or you can rent a walk behind roller
Thanks for the added tip
Looks good I hope it didn't set sail like mine did before I got it finished
thinking about getting one of these to Make a portable paint both out of it
Mine is holding up well
I was thinking the same thing. This way I can use it inside my shop and not get overspray on everything. Did you ever do this?
@@freemurray in guessing if he had a shop that big he'd just park in it instead of buying this to park in 😆
Abba Patio Outdoor Carport Canopy is what I'm thinking of buying. See good reviews on that one. Costs about $160. It's just not fully covered. Gonna bucket and concret legs. I may take a look at one you have at store up the road. However is it truth it's about 300 bucks for this thing?
How tall is the door opening I’m hoping my tractor would fit in there with the rollbar
I put my tractor in mind you may have to just put the roll bar down but other then that it's very roomy
I see you uploaded this 4 years ago how is it now ?
Finally blew apart this year in a wind storm
4 years is pretty good for this type of structure. I’m thinking of buying one for a temporary (3-4 years) spray booth. Thanks for the video!
Most people need to re-tarp it after 2-3 years.
@@HomeOwnerRepair seems pretty good. I'm paying for a storage unit, so technically this is cheaper even if I had to replace it every 3 months, haha. I only need it for about 2 years anyway while I wrap up school. The tradeoff is that it's definitely less secure.
Thinking about using this as a portable goat shelter. How hard it is to move from place to place?
You could probably move it with a few people helping
@@HomeOwnerRepair Can you drag it from place to place or does it need to be taken apart and reassembled each time?
Ya boy about to create his own custom paint booth out of this.
I have seen people do this before
I can't find a replacement cover for it
How tall is the shelter from the top of the ridge to the ground? Harbor Freight say it is 9' tall, but that looks to be closer to the sides. For what I need to shelter for the more headroom I can get the better. Thank for the info.
its nine ft like they say
Does it come with some other way to attach the top poles? Or would they just be held together by friction fit is you didn't put in the self tapping screws?
The poles slide into each other like a tent. I used self tapping screws to help prevent them from pulling apart. We get a lot of snow here
I would think that even if you didn't have a lot of snow it would be better to have the poles screwed together. I'll be doing the same if I get one of these to hold my tractor.
What size screws did you use?
If you can't get replacement covers for them, why would you buy one?
You can
I wondered if someone could put gal roofing instead of the tarp.
yes, there is a video on here with someone using metal roofing
What's the diameter of those poles. I don't think they are big enough to carry a snow load.
I've had this one go through a lot of blizzards and snow storms, the trick is to tap it off from the inside once the storm is over. The snow will slide right off. I usually use the brush end of a shop broom.
Would it fall apart in winter in buffalo NY I rent and would like it protect my work truck
I’m in N.H. and it had lasted through many high wind and heavy snow blizzards
Where can i buy i am looking for truck tent can someone told me please
I bought this one at Harbor Freight
Does this have a front and back door so you can drive straight through it?
if you buy 2 of them you can have a 20 foot long one with front and back doors
How does it handle during winter time especially with snow?
It's been fine. When it snows I typically go in and gently tap the roof with a broom and it slides right off.
Are these good for heavy snow
I haven’t had an issue with mine
You must go outside and tap the snow off. If the weight of the snow causes it to sag you’re done. Also you need to remove snow in case you go through a freezing rain, snow cycle. Snow and ice can get super heavy. And don’t kid yourself. These are great in warm weather when you install it. But come winter and if your area gets snow buyer beware. This is not a garage. It is a canopy/tent.
Are the sides removable? I want to use it as an RV cover and would need to raise it up about 4' higher. Any idea if that is possible?
No they are not removable. Your RV might be too high for it
Build a base to set it on.
I'm having trouble getting poles into the slips on the tarp I've tried silicone spray any pointers?
Mine went right in
You probably know by now thst they don’t go in the HEAM
After 2.5 years in TX heat and UV the canvas/tarp is breaking down and will be toast by this summer. Luckily I got it as a store return they wanted to get rid of for $129 out the door
This video is not 5 years old. Has the cover lasted this long? If not? how long did it last?
It lasted about 4 years
@@HomeOwnerRepair pretty impressive in your climate.
Can you tell me if it will withstand 25 mph winds?
I have had this last through multiple blizzards with 55+ MPH winds
How did it holdup
Last about 2-3 years
I'm thinking about getting the same 10x17.
How does it hold in 2020?
This one lasted for about 5 years
How tall is the door from the ground?
Mine finally blew apart. My jeep has 4 1/2" of lift on 33s and it rubbed on the door.
Had one only lasted 16 months,From wind damage, can't buy a replacement
Welp it’s done just lost it in a wind storm
Homeowner Repair RIP
Hey almost 3 years is pretty damn good
They last about 2 years
I just got two of these and within the first week my first one has dripping moisture on the inside. it holds moisture on the outside enough to cause major dripping condensation on the inside............😡what is the purpose of having a canvas garage to cover stuff if it drips and leaks all over my stuff anyway?????
The one I have doesn't do that Mary. I'm going on about three years with this one. I have had pretty good luck with it
Gotta let air in mary. If you seal em condensation is natural.
snow load?
as long as you clean it off should be ok
How is that holding up so far?
This one lasted about 5 years, just got a new one that has lasted only a year.UGH!
@@HomeOwnerRepair good information to know thank you.
How did it do in snow?
Lasted 4 years through many rain storms and blizzards before a windstorm finally did it in.
How’s it holding up?
Good, it’s still up
And holding up fine. It has been through some bad blizzards
Hows it holding up against the wind?
+Mr Shadowz we've had some 50-60 mph wind storms over the winter and it has held up fine
awesome, i appreciate the reply (:
any ideas on how to insulate this thing?
Yeah gut me....might be tough to do
@@HomeOwnerRepair Sure! get 47 cans of spray foam and go to town!
A small personal workout gym lol.
There yah go...lol
How is this holding up after a couple of years?
So far so good. It has lasted through some pretty bad winters too.
They don't last long. About 2 years
@@domingotrevino6797 i agree but for a buck sixty or so its worth it
snow in september? wtf
Nice..what size is this..
Not sure, it’s from Harbor Freight
HomeownerRepair ok kool
How much do these cost at harbor freight...
$200
Looks nice but how do it hold up with the wind?
I've had it for a while now and it's been fine in blizzards and wind storms
can this thing survive another snowmageddon like in 2014?
I have had it for a while now...so probably
looks like you have had it for 3 years now...any signs of rips-fraying? I just got one.
How does it keep outdoor pest out? Cats, rats, mice, possums....
They can get in. It's hard to keep them our of a regular garage too though.
Might try cedar 1x2s around the base of it.
for a 10x17 they want $300 plus a shipping of $97 KMA
Its $199.99 with a coupon or $240 without now
could a fit a full size car ?
+Rohn hodge yes is would fit a full size car with no problem. It's pretty high too. I store a Jeep Wrangler in mine with a 4" lift on 33s
HomeOwnerRepair would you think a bronco with 4" lift and 35s will fit?
Do you know if there’s a way to lock the front door on it
I'm not sure that it would help. These garages are easy to break into.
@@HomeOwnerRepair Utility knife will open it up faster than the zippers can!
Homeowner Repair damn alright
Homeowner Repair how did you put that part that holds it down into the dirt
depending where you live, the tarp covering will last at best a yr. everything else is ok, but, the tarp covering is way to thin and cracks, tears and wears out. shame
Mine lasted 5 years in New Hampshire through quite a few blizzards.
Hello. my garage tarp ripped after 2 years.... looking for a replacement tarp....
The one I have is still going strong
Did you ever find a replacement?
Is it pretty pesk proof?
Mice, ratts, squirls, possums?
How tall is it ?
+nickyfranks It has to be about 8 or 9 feet at the peak. I have an 89 Wrangler on 33s with a 4" lift that fits in it.
@@HomeOwnerRepair I have a front solid axle swap S10 on 38s at the top of the cab is at 7 ft and 3 in tall, what I'd be able to fit in the door or should I build it on center blocks. Also how tall is the door from the ground
This thing is complete trash. I don’t recommend anyone buy this. The carport itself is ok once you build it, but the instructions are TERRIBLE and the poles come “numbered”. In my experience the poles I got was just a black smudge where the number should be. You couldn’t even make out what number the pole was. RIDICULOUS. 1/10 stars I’ll give this. I even took it back and got another one, same thing, numbers on poles are so smudged they are illegible. Some poles even came without any number at all! I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out this puzzle. As mentioned it’s ok one you get it up, but you better have some patience.
Atta last ya bout 2months ir less
Lasted about 4 years
WE HAVE THE SAME 1 AND LAST YEARS SNOW TORE A 5; FT HOLE IN IT //// ANY & I D E A S
Not sure if you can just buy a new cover
