I rented from Avis in downtown London. Car had a stone chip in the windshield which I marked. When I returned the car, they tried to charge me for a windshield. I told them it was damaged when I rented it. They said they never rent cars with damaged windshields. I showed them the pre-rental inspection report. They were very disappointed. They've probably gotten paid for this windshield multiple times.

Hertz tried to do this to me on a rental in Vegas back in 2009. I dropped it off, took pictures and a video of the condition it was in at drop off….a few months later I get a bill from them for replacing the front bumper. I called them, asked for proof of damaged bumper, they told me they fixed it already. When I told the, I have pictures showing the car was fine when I dropped it off, the guy said “do you always take pictures?’” Ummm yeah! Otherwise they pull this 💩

I always walk around the car and take a lot of photos before I leave the rental place.
This saved me one time when they tried to charge me for a scratch on the back.
When it was clean and under the sun, I didn't notice it. But when it rained and the scratch filled with dirt, it was very obvious.
Although I didn't notice it at the time, the photos showed it was already there, so they didn't charge me 👍

My one experience with Sixt in Denmark was enough to warn me off them forever. I reserved the biggest car I could, a full size Opel wagon. When I picked it up the agent happily told me I'd been upgraded. The upgrade was a BMW X1. Family of 4 with 4 suitcases and 4 carry-on bags doesn't fit. When I tried to renegotiate the price they tried to insist that the base model X1 was more expensive than the Opel, because it was a BMW.

So basically their entire business model is to screw over their customers, nice. What a scummy company. I have always taken photos and video of every car I rent for years now, never had any issues but it's only a matter of time. I had to rent a car at the Tampa airport a few months ago and I saw Sixt and just walked right by, 100% because of your experience with them.

When picking up the car they provided me a series of photos of how they were delivering me the vehicle and then they have a portal that allows the renter to upload your own photos when picking it up i.e. airport. We hired a sixt in Spain had had exactly the same issue. Original car A3 broke down at 10pm in the hills so after waiting 2hrs to get picked up they finally dropped us at the airport to get another car that was scratched all over. At 1am we didn't check the car only to be charged for a delivery of the broken car because it wasn't returned to the airport. Then they proceeded to charge us for existing damage. Used to use SixT all over the world but that stopped us from ever renting a car from them again. I had to insist they delete all personal data after 60days to get off their mailing list.

I rented from Sixt in Dublin last year, and I must say it was the easiest rental experience I ever had. They told me the car I was getting had a scrape on the front fender, but don't worry about it. When I picked up the car on the top level of the multi-story parking lot, I walked around it and took photos of everything, including close-ups of the wheels. When I returned it three weeks later, they didn't even look at it. There was a line of maybe 25 people waiting to pick up cars, and they were so happy to see a car coming in that they just signed off on it without checking anything. I didn't put a mark on it, but I can see how easy it is to pick up door dings. The parking spots over there are just inches wider than the cars.

Hertz in Miami Beach, 2009. Rented a Mustang convertible for 5 days; no V-8, just a black V-6 auto. Took pix of all the wheels and angles of it. Jumped in to get my visit started and when I closed the door, it smelled like a dirty catbox. There's no way to record THAT. I went and washed/cleaned the thing out and threw an air freshener under the seat.
Upon returning it, they looked it over and said it's good. The credit card bill showed up a week after I got back, they charged me $250 for smoking in it! Yes, I smoke, but not in a rental car!! When I spoke to a rental person at Hertz, they told me that it "smelled funny" upon return. I explained the condition of it to him, renting a premium car that was filthy, they had no other ragtops in stock, etc. He was very sorry, but that's company policy on returns. If THEY say it's damaged, it's DAMAGED!!! Thank God I had filled the tank before taking it back!!

I get weird looks like I am crazy but doing a full uncut video walkaround, showing the odometer, time and surrounding location has given me a good sense of comfort knowing that I am covered if the rental company pulls any shenanigans. Thankfully never had to use it but it only takes 2 mins to do.

Had a similar experience with a company called Klasswagen in Europe. Their insurance was ~1.4x the rate of the rental, and they warn you that (1) your credit card insurance won’t cover you unless you have a police report for the damage and (2) every rock chip or scratch or windshield chip is €600+.
Of course, they found some new tiny little scratch on the car I returned after 2 weeks, but I thankfully somehow captured it (for a split second) in a walk-around video I took of the car. Felt like I got away with something even though it’s clearly part of their business model to either charge a lot for insurance or catch their customers on damage claims.

Or, it's not repaired and just sold off for cheaper, as you already paid for the damage. Additionally, if they were to refurbish a wheel and that would cause any issues after the car is sold, they're on the hook for hit as law mandates a 2 year warranty in B2C sales over here.

Takes maybe 2-3 minutes tops and as you showed, could easily save you serious money.

In Europe renting a car is really a pain in the ass. Last rental in Spain at the airport, booked a car with insurance for totall loss. First thing when i arrived at 22:00 clerk want to have me buy additional insurance( standard procedure). Then they give me a paper from the car with only 1 spot market as damage. then you have to go to airport security and when i arrive at the car, it had 20 spots damage, then took photo’s security didn’t let me return to the desk in the airport, then after long discussion the let me back, women behind the desk immediately signed 20 markings on the car. In south spain almost all parked cars have damage, so you shit your pants evryday. Then when i return the car, desk wasn’t open yet so just have to leave the key in mailbox! Nobody to sign of… afterwards they kept 60€ of my 1000€ credit card deposit they hold. No explanation what so ever… car was tidy en tanked full. Imagine if I didn’t mention the damage on the car when taking the keys!

my family went to iceland last summer and we rented a Mitsubishi eclipse cross which is a terrible car and it looked like they washed it with a snow brush after each rental. on a super windy day when we stopped at a gas station when i opened the door the wind caught it and it hit something. the only damage was a ding on the end of the door and if we had a chance some and plyers with a rag would have probably fixed it sufficiently but the rental car place charged us like 3k i think ( covered under my dads credit card) and theres no way the actually fixed the door.

He's been shitting on them in all of his news review videos for I think a couple of years now at this point.

You can't get high off hemp? Not true Rob, you can't get high off CBD but hemp there's hemp derived Delta 8 THC, THC-0 THC-P THC-A DELTA 10 in countless others that I can name that are legal and you can just buy in a gas station due to the 2018 farm Bill which legalized hemp... Trust me I wouldn't be buying gummies and vape cartridges here in Indiana at my local gas station if they didn't get me high.... 💯 😂😂😂

I rented bmw exactly like that from Rome Fiumicino airport sixt back in february and they tried to do exactly the same to me. The car had 20+ spots of damage marked and tried to get me for a curbed wheel and a ding on the drivers side door which I knew were there before I got it. Luckily I took pictures all around the car before even getting in it and showed them to the guy checking out the car when we returned it. Somehow he started having trouble speaking and understanding english (which he did just fine before) after I showed him the proof of the damage being there before we even left the parking spot. After a while he regained his ability to speak english and said that he will send a email back to their claims department to say that the damage was already there before we even got it.
The car was in awful shape too, not a single panel or wheel on the car that didnt have damage and even the steering wheel was off center by about 20-30 degrees. Luckily I didnt end up getting charged, but I can only imagine how many people they get by doing that.

Filled up before we returned the car. 2 weeks later i received an invoice through the post to say they are going to charge me 20 euro plus 1 hr labour of 50euro. Luckily i kept the receipt in my backpack. If i haven't got my receipt, i would have been scammed by them.
