Loved the video fevir but the PvE in this game is better then you think man, its just different its not the tank and healer that you have in most themepark mmos but there are tanky and suporty specs for classes and the PvE is not easy at end game.. I didnt play the Korean version but Lee Jae Sung the last winner of the World championship PvP tournament said that the "newest dungeon on the korean version has been out for 5 weeks and no one have managed to complete it yet". He also told me that they release content super fast for BnS in korea," like alot of dungeons and raids its 1 new PvE thing everymonth" I think that is awesome. and if you want to challenge yourself in BnS PvE you can also go solo to dungeons and play it and then it will be hard in the way that if you fuck up and take dmg you basically get 1shot and have to try the boss again.. kinda like Dark souls where you fight big monster but then fail in some way and die and you try it agian.. if you like a challenge like that then you will like the BnS PvE.. Thats just some info about PvE for you and anyone else who wanna read the comment :) PS: maybe they will make the PvE faceroll for NA/EU tho we dont know that 100% yet but i hope not. +Fevir Yea, in late game group content. There will still be a tank. However, unlike trinity MMO where the job is restricted to certain class. Most class here has a tool to become a tank. When you are on tank duty, you will focus on protection and counter. You combo will change accordingly so others can line up their straight dps combo. For end game content, you will have to spec for it. If you ever solo mini boss, you should see that your combo is different than when you fight normal mob or pvp. You will be on defensive. Perhaps, it's less apparent for assassin as that class in not suit to become tank. It's more of a pure dps class. This is my experience as Blademaster in Korean server years ago anyway. I don't know how much has changed between now and then. However, back then I wouldn't consider this game hard. You can solo most if not all group content in the game if you are skilled/patience enough. However, most boss mechanic is still very enjoyable IMO. The problem I saw in most group contents before level cap, for example world map mini bosses. If you solo it, your dps will be low. It will take so long to kill it. Because it has HP pool for multiple people in mind. If you gang it, Boss's damage will spread among everyone that it is no longer a threat. Because it seem mini boss's attack should still be manageable for a single player. So everyone will just ignore whatever the boss does and spam attack.
+Fevir The BnS you are playing here is like 4 years old in comparison. It's like the first half of Kill La Kill. It only gets crazy in the second half, and that's called Blade and Soul 2.0. I'ts got SOLO pve dungeons. It's got legendary gear. It's got raids a typical human can barely manage. The game really kicks it up a notch around then, matching the PVP quite well in my opinion. HOWEVER, I'm talking from playing on the China server a while back. I remember the game being generally difficult, to a moderately fun level. But from what I'm hearing, they've nerfed the game quite a bit in the western edition. I really hope they change that because it was perfect over in the east. Not like excruciatingly hard, but fun with the occasional death, then scaling up to pretty hardcore near the endgame with good raids that are fun to look at for the amount of times you have to do them. And on that note, the game was always amazing for retaining gear grind that makes you replay dungeons, but not having the annoying XP grind that bars you from content. It's a rarity in that sense. But hey, what do I know, I'm here from secret category 3. I played the game originally because of the artist Hyung Tae Kim, the mind and soul behind this game. I'm mostly here for the atmosphere and visuals, though stayed to try out all the classes :) Warlock and 9th class can't wait!
+Fevir just watch the current end game content pve for Korea. It's a lot a lot of stuff to do. We are getting all that steadily so people experience and learn each part of game content. They officially announced on stream as well as the original developers that are engaged for the west community. Even tho this game it's 4 years old. In Korean it feels a difference game because how much it had evolved and pve it's just as good as pvp.

This Impressions video is done really well. You've earned y subscription definitely. With that said; I've been itching to try this game for the last four (4) years and only now have the means to give it a go. You certainly have validated my thoughts with some extra hands-on detail that I'd not known about up until this point.
The Russian servers are a supper supper outdated version of the game that's not even supported by ncsoft it's free to play so when it comes out just try it

Whenever i talk about people making an mmo of an anime like fairy tail or naruto, this kind of combat system is what i dream of! I do hope that creators take the combat system of this game into so many more mmo's!
The forums have been down since the time I was introduced to this game (heard about it a while ago, but never noticed). Friend told me he was going to play so I went to check out some stuff. Curious though... I am a graphics junkie and wanted to know if they update their graphics accordingly to the updated technology. Does such happen to this game? And have they updated it since the first release in 2012 on the other servers? (and what i mean by updated technology is -- Direct X 10/11.12, and possibly an engine update for the NA servers)

I really like your reviews Fevir, but as many others pointed out, PvE in this game gets really good later. Some amazing mechanics I've never seen anywhere else, with a real gestion of verticality (i.e. making the boss fly in order for him to avoid a buff wave that will go through the room, etc), it's really fun. And no holy trinity !

I played this game for the first time on CBT #1 and prior to that I've heard sooo much about how good the combat is. And now I understand just... how... good... the... combat... is... Like Fevir said, it's hard to explain. It's unique. I've played Tera, and it makes Tera's action combat look small. You just have to try it to see. Usually when I play a new mmo, it takes me a couple of rotations to get used to the skills. But in BnS, I found myself practicing combo rotations on regular monsters that I don't even have to kill for a quest. I was literally grinding and having fun, and even after all that practicing I still feel like I haven't mastered the combo rotations yet. That's when I realized why this game's 1v1 pvp arena is in E-Sports.
One of the original sales points when I first heard of this game years ago was that everything in the game could be your target, including your allies, rocks, trees, etc. Is that true? I didn't see any of that demonstrated here. Is the map destructible? Was just curious since I'm a huge pvp fan, but feel like when I nuke people in other games with massive explosions, a crater should form but doesn't.
+SwordBreaker925 GW2 not really added the trinity, but now they add raid for 10 player, and in these raid, we need to spec alike the holy trinity, but its not really different than before, its just now we have the gear with the good stat to heal with class like guardian and mage. if you put a guardians qith all the perk for AOE heal +regen with a good heal gear + heal rune you have a good sustain healer, ok it will not be really like a true trinity, but you need it to stay alive, without it , its not possible to keep all the party alive using only the self heal skill.
nymx Lol calm down kid. Yes vanilla didnt have much of an end game and they could still do better, but it's certainly not bad. As for PvP and WvW, i've never enjoyed these types of modes in ANY MMO, so i cant say much for them.
nymx Lol what healing class? All classes have great healing abilities. All classes stand well on their own and in a group. The game is fantastic, and the player base proves that. There's a reason it's so popular and has been for years.

Great video the only thing I disagree with is at 0:40 those 3 points you listed were all listed by NCsoft as things they are not doing, except MAYBE the dumbing it down storywise and so on but the reduced difficulty is false its the same difficulty as other servers and they are actually UNCENSORING it rather then censoring ^^ not sure that you read comments but maybe someone else was wondering and decided to read this comment but yeah its not a game I think of when im like Whats a great game with PvE content? but it is for sure the first that comes to mind when i think of PvP

I wanna know, are all weapons and other valuable items accessible by farming/grinding? I'm not talking about cosmetics, but just weapons and items to help strengthen your character.
+Kitty Kata with a Cherry on top Not really. I don't know if you know about the gear morphing here. But to be clear, In KR and JP versions of the game there is an easier morph system than in the CN version. But the concept is that you have your first Levelable weapon. You insert other weapons in it to level it up. When you;ve reached the fifth level you need to get a special weapon that will break-thru your weapon to sixth level. Then you do the same inserting thing till level 10. Then you have to find another special weapon, then some materials like Evo stones. crystals, etc. and then you get the next version of your current weapon. Rinse and Repeat. Same deal with the other gear. but there are some branching paths among weapons. Like do you want a final morph or do you want a Legandary morph. But. as i said, with the rest of the gear you just lvl it up. upgrade. morph and again. So pretty much while you are leveling up your char, in the meantime you are upgrading your weapon and gear. the main ammount of resources are available just by doing quests and dungeons like the story wants you to. But after 45 level you need to have a good party of your friends to achieve whatever you want
+Shinstrikex the big thing is that the main saving grace for me, the pvp, was unplayable in RU. Ping and levels.. here at least even when I wasnt max level I was up against other non max levels since it was fresh.. and classes like the Assassin and KFM are literally unplayable past a certain ping
Oh. I recall that quite clearly as a Blademaster. my parry would come out extremely late and it would really annoy me. to the point i felt i couldnt play that server anymore.
So in short you don't like PvE because it lacks the western Tank/Healer classes? That's stupid and narrow minded of you. The game is based on how well you play a class, timing and skill point distribution. Unlike the western games where you beg people to be a tank to soak damage or healer to push a button and get blamed or flamed, this game lets you be yourself. You won't see a class like Warlock, Force Master, Assassin or Summoner tank so for that you need a Blade Master, Kung-fu Master or Destroyer. So despite what you might say this game has an intelligent design with ocassional hick-ups, but its a breath of fresh air from everything that poisoned the MMO market all these years.

+Fevir I don't think so. In most MMO's you pick a class and stick with the role it offers as a trinity member. Only games that let you carve a path in PvE's are single player RPG's where you turn into a one man army. MMO's were built on the concept the the "trinity" and the overcompensation stat gear. The fact that you are able to clear out a dungeon meant for 6 people based on correct usage of skills with a class that is able to self sustain and defend itself and deal damage IS a breath of fresh air considering the fact that this is a MMO.

You play games because of graphics and never get satisfied by the gameplay leading you to quit early. +Jay Ray Games (Developers of the games) push graphics forward just if they can't present nothing more and know what is Games potential, graphics nowadays mean much just for school kids who can just watch games and can't play them. +Scyth3R Yes BDO graphically is better than games created in 2009, but for game that presents it self as modern graphical project is way outdated, also it's quite ugly in gamma and color correction, also often atmosphere does not fit its theme, and BDO is very FX intensive what make my eyes cry just in 15m of gameplay. Beautiful does not mean just clearly traced pictures, it's also colors, gamma, theme and atmosphere and in all this elements, but clearly traced textures BnS still looks better and what's important - BnS is much more eye friendly. But I still think that NCs use way "booby" textures for the characters that look funny more than fun, but in this game I find so much fun that didn't have much time to look its textures, that's the difference between BnS and BDO, play BnS and watch BDO... I prefer games to play and movies to watch where graphics is still much better than in any modern game. Also games name say many things about product - Blade and Soul: Soul-crafted Blade, - Black Desert: it's Dark and Empty there.
i remember 4 yrs back testing it out,and having perma death if you died your character could float around but couldnt do anything :P s it would force you to make a new character everytime was pretty fun looking forward to it again

Senpai kee well for 24$ you can get a founder pack and play in 9 day for the weekend (Closed Beta) and you can play i think the 24 too and you get some bonus like 3 day access before the launch start and some in game money with tittles etc
+PanicGiraffe played both games and I would recommend BNS for PVP/PVE and BDO for graphics/economy/trade system. The reason I dislike BDO PVE is because its old school skill spamming with the boss taking hits, no real mechanics whatsoever. I was expecting a Vindictus/Tera/Dragon nest boss mechanics/attack paterns and I found none. In BNS however, there are certain bosses that use different skills and combos, some human bosses also have pretty cool skills and whatnot. In terms of open worldness though, I think BDO wins since it feels like a sandbox mmo although it gets tiring at end game when you can not even fast travel unlike in BNS. But at the end of the day, I would still play both of them, because I can haha.
+allied006 I can confirm it ONLY TO SOME EXTENT. See, with the last expansion they added raids, or rather one raid wing with more to come. And the raids are designed around having tanks and supports. This is GW2, so things are more fluid (for example a mesmer tank is actually a thing), but in the raids a healer is pretty essential.
+allied006 Yeah they kinda are. With the addition of raids you see parties entering with one dedicated tank, one healer, and 4 dps flat and 4 dps dot with variation depending on what the party wants. On top of that each boss of the raid has a lot of specific things players have to keep aware of. So in short its a soft trinity with more focus on specific boss mechanics
Can't wait till this game officially releases. The only reason I'm not really playing the beta's is because I've already finished the entire leveling process probably 4 times on the Chinese servers, lol.

I guess I too have a bias since I already have played B&S and I know it doesn't feel that great or fluid but ya know what, w/e I'm hoping its good on the NA but there are so many games out or coming out that are better on my time. Witcher 3, MGS, Fall Out and so on.

+Lorna Kingsley the open world PVP is only if you have putted on you faction PVP outfit , if you are using some other outfit you are not flaged for pvp ;)
+Lorna Kingsley not sure if this is late but, do faction quests anyways. you are required to wear your pvp uniform while you do those quest but you do not need to actually kill another person.
Good combat in any games is a beautiful thing. Black Desert is the weirdest game on that front. It has all the ingredients of a Dragon's Dogma level action game, yet completely doesn't use it. It's like a make a house and then don't allow anyone to use it.
Your opinions about certain things in this game are interesting considering the black desert video I just watched. It's almost like watching 2 different people make videos in what you're willing to excuse in the one yet attack in the other. I haven't played either anywhere near enough to be invested one way or the other, I just find it interesting.
+diablowal hrm? Where in my personal opinion is there a break in consistency? I'm pretty sure for BnS impressions (although its been some time) I basically just say its standard pve with very impressive fighting style pvp.. and for Black Desert I talk about how it has a huge emphasis on it's world.

And also hold it to what appears to be a very different standard, I mean the sentence "nothing to really challenge you" in this video is in stark contrast to the kind of critique in the BD video despite that games literal lack of anything challenging. You complain about "just having to show up" in this game, where BD at least appears to have the exact same issue yet it seems to get a complete pass on that aspect. You sound very harsh when describing what you view as this games negatives, and then very forgiving when it comes to BD's. When watching the BD video I found it very fair even from my perspective of not caring much for what that game offers, whereas this video seems quite the opposite on certain things. Again I've barely touched this game, far from invested in it. I just found it interesting how stark the contrast was on how you compared the two. The bias is very apparent, which is fair enough as you state as much at the start.
diablowal I'd agree that I do have a bias. I'll watch them both over when I have time as I try to filter it out as much as I can. However with these two games.. it really is an apple and oranges type comparison. They share the same genre but are completely different styles. For instance the idea of having an instanced 6 man dungeon is that you need to have 6 men in it.. if you can wander in it solo and complete it.. something is wrong (BnS). In BDO they don't have that.. and I think I just say- that doesn't exist- so I don't really need to go further and instead try to explain what they add in its stead. I guess this is just justification on my part- but I do welcome the feedback.. I try very hard not to let hype cloud me too badly as I'm very prone to it. Thanks :)
+Fevir Just for the sake of discussion, why do you consider BD apples to oranges vs B&S? They at least appear to be largely the same type of game, if you dropped dungeons into BD you could make all the same criticisms that you made against B&S and mostly apply them to BD. On the same token if you just fleshed out the "appeal of the mundane" type stuff in B&S and removed the dungeons it would largely be the same game (with much worse graphics). There just appears to be more similarities than differences between the two from a game design standpoint, and the... lack of certain features which is why people are critical of BD is almost being used as a way to try and excuse it as practically another genre. I may just not be seeing it, since I have such little experience with either game. But if I remove the graphics factor and just look at both of them mechanically, I'm not sure why people almost look at them as apples vs oranges. I feel as though I'm missing something.
diablowal If you look at them mechanically.. sure. I think when it comes to MMORPGs (and from my channel you can probably tell I play them all) it comes down to the focus/audience. Blade and Soul is going to attract and keep 3 sets of people- anime heads- competitive esport minded people- and traditional theme parkers. So the way the game is designed- those are the game. Black Desert is not going to attract and keep those people. There are entire groups of people who will only play games that have housing- and if fleshed out the appeal of the mundane in BnS to a similar extent (maybe added additional functionality that overlaps with what players searching for that also like) than that would alter BnS in a real way for potential players. "the... lack of certain features which is why people are critical of BD is... ...exuse it as practically another genre" -- It isn't a lack- it's a conscious design choice to do it differently. That in itself really alters the way you have to approach it. It's like taking a racing game- traditionally with cars.. and used boats. The thing with MMORPGs is that they boil down to a collection of activities- the types and depth of each activity (among other stuff) kind of define it in the space and these two games in particular have fleshed out opposing activities.
Could you say that the PvP is more or less martial arts Dark Souls style combat where you aren't locked into anything, you never have to take damage and every mistake is your fault (except for hitbox fuck ups and lag.) Cause if it is like that, I am fucking excited for it.

***** Not at all. And now is the best time to start. Game just started a few days back for the public. It's easy to hit the current max level, and it's not hard to get the things you want.
+WhoaItsJon Cash shop exists but nothing special. Cosmetics is probably the most bought items. Some cosmetics can not be crafted. It truly is the perfect version of a cash shop, your ideal cash shop format. When you're full lvl (45). The way to get gear is basically like World Of Warcraft, good ol' dailies and dungeons. Arena PVP (Not world pvp) does not require gear, cause you get synced. Same with levels, but if you're a low lvl doing arena pvp, you might not have unlocked all abilities, while your enemy has, putting you at a disadvantage. The biggest con of the game, that I felt, was the crafting system. The crafting system feels overly complicated and not in a good way. It feels redundant and just outright tiring. But the gathering skills/guilds and how you collect materials is nice. But the very crafting part... my god.
No offense but most of the early dungeon are complete solo-able so don't be too happy. Most later contents are the really hard ones. PvE in later games are really difficult and requires a lot of skills and team work if your gears aren't at the best there is (which is hard to get as hell). Also 2:33 we just saw him ganking low levels -_-.

Yah.. I started this 3 days ago. Starting to get kinda bored, and I realized that combat is only thing that's keeping me playing. Combat IS really good. It feels different than any other of its kind. Very smooth and fast.
Player from TW and China server: Tbh most, if not all mmo that i've played have identical types of quests. BnS isn't even the most annoying one because you can teleport to cities and camps and so from virtually anywhere. The most annoying i can remember from recent mmos is Tera. Walk 50 miles to just talk to one NPC and back again. BnS doesn't have that crap. You can jump and glide around which really feels like free world (kinda like aion). The reason dungeons are so easy to clear is because the number of beginners in servers in other countries are declining thus they had to make them easier to clear with less people. As you skid through the beginner stage, you probably won't build much skill, but the difficulty grows exponentially at high levels, almost making you crack your head as you remember your class' role and do's and don't's in certain boss fights.
I'm level 16 Kung Fu Master and the combat is super boring to me. I might not be very good at this game but I've noticed that the best tactic to not get damage is to fight 1 on 1 and counter as much as possible, thus I end up engaging one enemy then slowly running away from everyone else and then I just press a few buttons over and over and it takes forever but I have to in order to survive. Maybe I need to upgrade before going to places that are hard, but it's just very dull anyways in my opinion so far. I hope that it gets better as I level up and learn more.

+overcast201 I would believe that considering the system requirements of BNS you should be able to run it smoothly on low quality at least. I'm being pretty skeptical but I would say 1366x768 and low quality is the way to go. Then you would probably get smooth gameplay, and again I'm a fucking skeptic in everything. CPU is fine it's a late 2015 dual core I believe? So enough with my speculation, try it out the day after tomorrow and you'll know, but my guess is that you can get smooth gameplay out of it.
Actually I prefer games that reject "holy trinity" in favor of controlled chaos mechanic. This is not that makes game bad, but it is just approach to a combat. Some might argue "but then there is no role for me in dungeon" which is bluntly stupid claim - if group of friends actually play together they can pick whatever class they want, classes that they feel more comfortable and feel free from restrictions of "holy trinity". Best runs in dungeons I had in GW2 where I was Ele there with 4 other Eles and everyone were claiming "it will be a deathfest" actually turned into best dungeon runs I had.

Saying that holy trinity needs to be in the game is pretty shallow. It is a nice system that works but you can do without it. I don't think it will work in B&S but maybe in another MMO.

Just by watching the rest of the view. I feel like I'm going to drown my self in hate because of the leveling up system. I've never been a fan of grinding in mmos just because of the shitty system kill collect and turn in. I feel like I'll play this game for a week and then give up like tera. How well is black desert's pve and leveling up compared to bladen soul?
what's good? it's fevir. So, technical alpha for blade and soul NA has now ended, and I figured I'd collect my thoughts and share them with you. Now before I talk more about it, I did try the RU version of the game in the past and between the Russian and the typical theme park MMO stuff I think I quit before level 15. So, I'm already a little bit biased against the game. (And) in addition to that I was given free access to this alpha as many content creators on youtube and streamers on twitch were - which is probably the only reason I logged onto the game during Canadian thanksgiving weekend. Now that said, the next test phase is in like four days - and this game is like already 4 years old or something. so I don't imagine large changes, I think as we go through the game we might see some westernization.

Loved the video fevir but the PvE in this game is better then you think man, its just different its not the tank and healer that you have in most themepark mmos but there are tanky and suporty specs for classes and the PvE is not easy at end game.. I didnt play the Korean version but Lee Jae Sung the last winner of the World championship PvP tournament said that the "newest dungeon on the korean version has been out for 5 weeks and no one have managed to complete it yet". He also told me that they release content super fast for BnS in korea," like alot of dungeons and raids its 1 new PvE thing everymonth" I think that is awesome. and if you want to challenge yourself in BnS PvE you can also go solo to dungeons and play it and then it will be hard in the way that if you fuck up and take dmg you basically get 1shot and have to try the boss again.. kinda like Dark souls where you fight big monster but then fail in some way and die and you try it agian.. if you like a challenge like that then you will like the BnS PvE.. Thats just some info about PvE for you and anyone else who wanna read the comment :) PS: maybe they will make the PvE faceroll for NA/EU tho we dont know that 100% yet but i hope not. +Fevir Yea, in late game group content. There will still be a tank. However, unlike trinity MMO where the job is restricted to certain class. Most class here has a tool to become a tank. When you are on tank duty, you will focus on protection and counter. You combo will change accordingly so others can line up their straight dps combo. For end game content, you will have to spec for it.
If you ever solo mini boss, you should see that your combo is different than when you fight normal mob or pvp. You will be on defensive. Perhaps, it's less apparent for assassin as that class in not suit to become tank. It's more of a pure dps class.
This is my experience as Blademaster in Korean server years ago anyway. I don't know how much has changed between now and then. However, back then I wouldn't consider this game hard. You can solo most if not all group content in the game if you are skilled/patience enough. However, most boss mechanic is still very enjoyable IMO.
The problem I saw in most group contents before level cap, for example world map mini bosses. If you solo it, your dps will be low. It will take so long to kill it. Because it has HP pool for multiple people in mind. If you gang it, Boss's damage will spread among everyone that it is no longer a threat. Because it seem mini boss's attack should still be manageable for a single player. So everyone will just ignore whatever the boss does and spam attack.
+Fevir The BnS you are playing here is like 4 years old in comparison. It's like the first half of Kill La Kill. It only gets crazy in the second half, and that's called Blade and Soul 2.0. I'ts got SOLO pve dungeons. It's got legendary gear. It's got raids a typical human can barely manage. The game really kicks it up a notch around then, matching the PVP quite well in my opinion. HOWEVER, I'm talking from playing on the China server a while back. I remember the game being generally difficult, to a moderately fun level. But from what I'm hearing, they've nerfed the game quite a bit in the western edition. I really hope they change that because it was perfect over in the east. Not like excruciatingly hard, but fun with the occasional death, then scaling up to pretty hardcore near the endgame with good raids that are fun to look at for the amount of times you have to do them. And on that note, the game was always amazing for retaining gear grind that makes you replay dungeons, but not having the annoying XP grind that bars you from content. It's a rarity in that sense.
But hey, what do I know, I'm here from secret category 3. I played the game originally because of the artist Hyung Tae Kim, the mind and soul behind this game. I'm mostly here for the atmosphere and visuals, though stayed to try out all the classes :) Warlock and 9th class can't wait!
+Fevir just watch the current end game content pve for Korea. It's a lot a lot of stuff to do. We are getting all that steadily so people experience and learn each part of game content. They officially announced on stream as well as the original developers that are engaged for the west community. Even tho this game it's 4 years old. In Korean it feels a difference game because how much it had evolved and pve it's just as good as pvp.

The forums have been down since the time I was introduced to this game (heard about it a while ago, but never noticed). Friend told me he was going to play so I went to check out some stuff. Curious though... I am a graphics junkie and wanted to know if they update their graphics accordingly to the updated technology. Does such happen to this game? And have they updated it since the first release in 2012 on the other servers? (and what i mean by updated technology is -- Direct X 10/11.12, and possibly an engine update for the NA servers)

I really like your reviews Fevir, but as many others pointed out, PvE in this game gets really good later. Some amazing mechanics I've never seen anywhere else, with a real gestion of verticality (i.e. making the boss fly in order for him to avoid a buff wave that will go through the room, etc), it's really fun. And no holy trinity !

Uhm, when I play the game, the fighting is slow, and it doesn't go fast how it should, what should I do?
I played this game for the first time on CBT #1 and prior to that I've heard sooo much about how good the combat is. And now I understand just... how... good... the... combat... is...
Like Fevir said, it's hard to explain. It's unique. I've played Tera, and it makes Tera's action combat look small. You just have to try it to see.
Usually when I play a new mmo, it takes me a couple of rotations to get used to the skills. But in BnS, I found myself practicing combo rotations on regular monsters that I don't even have to kill for a quest. I was literally grinding and having fun, and even after all that practicing I still feel like I haven't mastered the combo rotations yet. That's when I realized why this game's 1v1 pvp arena is in E-Sports.
One of the original sales points when I first heard of this game years ago was that everything in the game could be your target, including your allies, rocks, trees, etc. Is that true? I didn't see any of that demonstrated here. Is the map destructible? Was just curious since I'm a huge pvp fan, but feel like when I nuke people in other games with massive explosions, a crater should form but doesn't.
Guild Wars 2 adding the trinity? I hadnt heard about this. Isnt the point of GW2 that all classes can heal, tank (some more than others) and DPS?
+SwordBreaker925 GW2 not really added the trinity, but now they add raid for 10 player, and in these raid, we need to spec alike the holy trinity, but its not really different than before, its just now we have the gear with the good stat to heal with class like guardian and mage. if you put a guardians qith all the perk for AOE heal +regen with a good heal gear + heal rune you have a good sustain healer, ok it will not be really like a true trinity, but you need it to stay alive, without it , its not possible to keep all the party alive using only the self heal skill.

+Kitty Kata with a Cherry on top Not really. I don't know if you know about the gear morphing here. But to be clear, In KR and JP versions of the game there is an easier morph system than in the CN version. But the concept is that you have your first Levelable weapon. You insert other weapons in it to level it up. When you;ve reached the fifth level you need to get a special weapon that will break-thru your weapon to sixth level. Then you do the same inserting thing till level 10. Then you have to find another special weapon, then some materials like Evo stones. crystals, etc. and then you get the next version of your current weapon. Rinse and Repeat. Same deal with the other gear. but there are some branching paths among weapons. Like do you want a final morph or do you want a Legandary morph. But. as i said, with the rest of the gear you just lvl it up. upgrade. morph and again. So pretty much while you are leveling up your char, in the meantime you are upgrading your weapon and gear. the main ammount of resources are available just by doing quests and dungeons like the story wants you to. But after 45 level you need to have a good party of your friends to achieve whatever you want

+Shinstrikex the big thing is that the main saving grace for me, the pvp, was unplayable in RU. Ping and levels.. here at least even when I wasnt max level I was up against other non max levels since it was fresh.. and classes like the Assassin and KFM are literally unplayable past a certain ping
Oh. I recall that quite clearly as a Blademaster. my parry would come out extremely late and it would really annoy me. to the point i felt i couldnt play that server anymore.
So in short you don't like PvE because it lacks the western Tank/Healer classes? That's stupid and narrow minded of you. The game is based on how well you play a class, timing and skill point distribution. Unlike the western games where you beg people to be a tank to soak damage or healer to push a button and get blamed or flamed, this game lets you be yourself. You won't see a class like Warlock, Force Master, Assassin or Summoner tank so for that you need a Blade Master, Kung-fu Master or Destroyer. So despite what you might say this game has an intelligent design with ocassional hick-ups, but its a breath of fresh air from everything that poisoned the MMO market all these years.

Only games that let you carve a path in PvE's are single player RPG's where you turn into a one man army. MMO's were built on the concept the the "trinity" and the overcompensation stat gear. The fact that you are able to clear out a dungeon meant for 6 people based on correct usage of skills with a class that is able to self sustain and defend itself and deal damage IS a breath of fresh air considering the fact that this is a MMO.

Im sorry but whoever complains about the textures or how badly outdated the graphics are in any comment section don't know the value of a game. You're not true gamers! You play games because of graphics and never get satisfied by the gameplay leading you to quit early. Go play your black desert and when you realise how bad the PvP is, quit it, wait for a name game to announce, rinse and repeat! I play whatever the fck I want to play cuz I enjoy the gameplay. Hence why I play multiple games. Who gives a fck about graphics!

+Scyth3R Yes BDO graphically is better than games created in 2009, but for game that presents it self as modern graphical project is way outdated, also it's quite ugly in gamma and color correction, also often atmosphere does not fit its theme, and BDO is very FX intensive what make my eyes cry just in 15m of gameplay.
Beautiful does not mean just clearly traced pictures, it's also colors, gamma, theme and atmosphere and in all this elements, but clearly traced textures BnS still looks better and what's important - BnS is much more eye friendly. But I still think that NCs use way "booby" textures for the characters that look funny more than fun, but in this game I find so much fun that didn't have much time to look its textures, that's the difference between BnS and BDO, play BnS and watch BDO... I prefer games to play and movies to watch where graphics is still much better than in any modern game. Also games name say many things about product - Blade and Soul: Soul-crafted Blade, - Black Desert: it's Dark and Empty there.

+PanicGiraffe played both games and I would recommend BNS for PVP/PVE and BDO for graphics/economy/trade system. The reason I dislike BDO PVE is because its old school skill spamming with the boss taking hits, no real mechanics whatsoever. I was expecting a Vindictus/Tera/Dragon nest boss mechanics/attack paterns and I found none. In BNS however, there are certain bosses that use different skills and combos, some human bosses also have pretty cool skills and whatnot. In terms of open worldness though, I think BDO wins since it feels like a sandbox mmo although it gets tiring at end game when you can not even fast travel unlike in BNS. But at the end of the day, I would still play both of them, because I can haha.
I would go for Bless over both of them.

+allied006 I can confirm it ONLY TO SOME EXTENT. See, with the last expansion they added raids, or rather one raid wing with more to come. And the raids are designed around having tanks and supports. This is GW2, so things are more fluid (for example a mesmer tank is actually a thing), but in the raids a healer is pretty essential.

+allied006 Yeah they kinda are. With the addition of raids you see parties entering with one dedicated tank, one healer, and 4 dps flat and 4 dps dot with variation depending on what the party wants. On top of that each boss of the raid has a lot of specific things players have to keep aware of. So in short its a soft trinity with more focus on specific boss mechanics

I guess I too have a bias since I already have played B&S and I know it doesn't feel that great or fluid but ya know what, w/e I'm hoping its good on the NA but there are so many games out or coming out that are better on my time. Witcher 3, MGS, Fall Out and so on.

+Lorna Kingsley the open world PVP is only if you have putted on you faction PVP outfit , if you are using some other outfit you are not flaged for pvp ;)

+Lorna Kingsley not sure if this is late but, do faction quests anyways. you are required to wear your pvp uniform while you do those quest but you do not need to actually kill another person.

Good combat in any games is a beautiful thing.
Black Desert is the weirdest game on that front. It has all the ingredients of a Dragon's Dogma level action game, yet completely doesn't use it. It's like a make a house and then don't allow anyone to use it.
Your opinions about certain things in this game are interesting considering the black desert video I just watched. It's almost like watching 2 different people make videos in what you're willing to excuse in the one yet attack in the other.
I haven't played either anywhere near enough to be invested one way or the other, I just find it interesting.
+diablowal hrm? Where in my personal opinion is there a break in consistency? I'm pretty sure for BnS impressions (although its been some time) I basically just say its standard pve with very impressive fighting style pvp.. and for Black Desert I talk about how it has a huge emphasis on it's world.

And also hold it to what appears to be a very different standard, I mean the sentence "nothing to really challenge you" in this video is in stark contrast to the kind of critique in the BD video despite that games literal lack of anything challenging. You complain about "just having to show up" in this game, where BD at least appears to have the exact same issue yet it seems to get a complete pass on that aspect.
You sound very harsh when describing what you view as this games negatives, and then very forgiving when it comes to BD's. When watching the BD video I found it very fair even from my perspective of not caring much for what that game offers, whereas this video seems quite the opposite on certain things.
Again I've barely touched this game, far from invested in it. I just found it interesting how stark the contrast was on how you compared the two. The bias is very apparent, which is fair enough as you state as much at the start.
diablowal I'd agree that I do have a bias. I'll watch them both over when I have time as I try to filter it out as much as I can. However with these two games.. it really is an apple and oranges type comparison. They share the same genre but are completely different styles.
For instance the idea of having an instanced 6 man dungeon is that you need to have 6 men in it.. if you can wander in it solo and complete it.. something is wrong (BnS). In BDO they don't have that.. and I think I just say- that doesn't exist- so I don't really need to go further and instead try to explain what they add in its stead.
I guess this is just justification on my part- but I do welcome the feedback.. I try very hard not to let hype cloud me too badly as I'm very prone to it. Thanks :)

They at least appear to be largely the same type of game, if you dropped dungeons into BD you could make all the same criticisms that you made against B&S and mostly apply them to BD. On the same token if you just fleshed out the "appeal of the mundane" type stuff in B&S and removed the dungeons it would largely be the same game (with much worse graphics).
There just appears to be more similarities than differences between the two from a game design standpoint, and the... lack of certain features which is why people are critical of BD is almost being used as a way to try and excuse it as practically another genre.
I may just not be seeing it, since I have such little experience with either game. But if I remove the graphics factor and just look at both of them mechanically, I'm not sure why people almost look at them as apples vs oranges. I feel as though I'm missing something.
diablowal If you look at them mechanically.. sure. I think when it comes to MMORPGs (and from my channel you can probably tell I play them all) it comes down to the focus/audience. Blade and Soul is going to attract and keep 3 sets of people- anime heads- competitive esport minded people- and traditional theme parkers. So the way the game is designed- those are the game.
Black Desert is not going to attract and keep those people. There are entire groups of people who will only play games that have housing- and if fleshed out the appeal of the mundane in BnS to a similar extent (maybe added additional functionality that overlaps with what players searching for that also like) than that would alter BnS in a real way for potential players.

That in itself really alters the way you have to approach it. It's like taking a racing game- traditionally with cars.. and used boats. When describing the game you can't be like.. man- where the cars at?
The thing with MMORPGs is that they boil down to a collection of activities- the types and depth of each activity (among other stuff) kind of define it in the space and these two games in particular have fleshed out opposing activities.

Could you say that the PvP is more or less martial arts Dark Souls style combat where you aren't locked into anything, you never have to take damage and every mistake is your fault (except for hitbox fuck ups and lag.) Cause if it is like that, I am fucking excited for it.

+FearOgre That's because they know Korean players will be lifeless zombies grinding in the game 24/7 so the devs can get away with a really grindy game, but they also know that this doesn't necessarily work outside of Asia.
PERFECT analysis of the game. The story can get dull and repetitive, but the combat is soo addictive especially for Kung fu Fighter for me. LOVE IT =D

+Pat Somers You can play the game without touching the cash shop once. It's 100% optional. You can literally go through the entire game and even forget there IS a cash shop. Unless you want outfits of course. But those can be crafted too.

Not at all. And now is the best time to start. Game just started a few days back for the public. It's easy to hit the current max level, and it's not hard to get the things you want.
+WhoaItsJon Cash shop exists but nothing special. Cosmetics is probably the most bought items. Some cosmetics can not be crafted.
It truly is the perfect version of a cash shop, your ideal cash shop format.
When you're full lvl (45). The way to get gear is basically like World Of Warcraft, good ol' dailies and dungeons.
Arena PVP (Not world pvp) does not require gear, cause you get synced. Same with levels, but if you're a low lvl doing arena pvp, you might not have unlocked all abilities, while your enemy has, putting you at a disadvantage.
The biggest con of the game, that I felt, was the crafting system. The crafting system feels overly complicated and not in a good way. It feels redundant and just outright tiring. But the gathering skills/guilds and how you collect materials is nice. But the very crafting part... my god.
No offense but most of the early dungeon are complete solo-able so don't be too happy. Most later contents are the really hard ones. PvE in later games are really difficult and requires a lot of skills and team work if your gears aren't at the best there is (which is hard to get as hell).

Yah.. I started this 3 days ago. Starting to get kinda bored, and I realized that combat is only thing that's keeping me playing. Combat IS really good. It feels different than any other of its kind. Very smooth and fast.
Thanks for a detailed review of the NA version of this game, not a lot of quality content out there in this area.

Tbh most, if not all mmo that i've played have identical types of quests. BnS isn't even the most annoying one because you can teleport to cities and camps and so from virtually anywhere. The most annoying i can remember from recent mmos is Tera. Walk 50 miles to just talk to one NPC and back again. BnS doesn't have that crap. You can jump and glide around which really feels like free world (kinda like aion).
The reason dungeons are so easy to clear is because the number of beginners in servers in other countries are declining thus they had to make them easier to clear with less people. As you skid through the beginner stage, you probably won't build much skill, but the difficulty grows exponentially at high levels, almost making you crack your head as you remember your class' role and do's and don't's in certain boss fights.
So is it worth it?
I'm level 16 Kung Fu Master and the combat is super boring to me. I might not be very good at this game but I've noticed that the best tactic to not get damage is to fight 1 on 1 and counter as much as possible, thus I end up engaging one enemy then slowly running away from everyone else and then I just press a few buttons over and over and it takes forever but I have to in order to survive. Maybe I need to upgrade before going to places that are hard, but it's just very dull anyways in my opinion so far. I hope that it gets better as I level up and learn more.

+overcast201 I would believe that considering the system requirements of BNS you should be able to run it smoothly on low quality at least. I'm being pretty skeptical but I would say 1366x768 and low quality is the way to go. Then you would probably get smooth gameplay, and again I'm a fucking skeptic in everything. CPU is fine it's a late 2015 dual core I believe? So enough with my speculation, try it out the day after tomorrow and you'll know, but my guess is that you can get smooth gameplay out of it.

The PvE might be like the standard of 5 years ago, but the standard really hasn't changed all that much.
Actually I prefer games that reject "holy trinity" in favor of controlled chaos mechanic. This is not that makes game bad, but it is just approach to a combat. Some might argue "but then there is no role for me in dungeon" which is bluntly stupid claim - if group of friends actually play together they can pick whatever class they want, classes that they feel more comfortable and feel free from restrictions of "holy trinity". Best runs in dungeons I had in GW2 where I was Ele there with 4 other Eles and everyone were claiming "it will be a deathfest" actually turned into best dungeon runs I had.

GW2 is not adding trinity.. It has always had their own kind of trinity, it's not adding standard trinity.

The best answer I can give is that it has the questing of wow, but the combat is tab targeting with combos. The combat is wierd but it works.

Saying that holy trinity needs to be in the game is pretty shallow. It is a nice system that works but you can do without it. I don't think it will work in B&S but maybe in another MMO.
It is not the typical PvE like in other MMORPGs. There is no tanks and healers. Everyone is straight DPS.

You level pretty fast in Blade and Soul also make friends its way more fun to play mmos in parties
+Aura Desru Levelings really fast in the other versions, and the story is pretty engaging. I never got grind fatigue playing this game.
+Aura Desru Black Desert is 100 times more grindy than Blade and Soul, you can get to lvl cap in a couple of days in BnS

So, technical alpha for blade and soul NA has now ended, and I figured I'd collect my thoughts and share them with you. Now before I talk more about it, I did try the RU version of the game in the past and between the Russian and the typical theme park MMO stuff I think I quit before level 15. So, I'm already a little bit biased against the game. (And) in addition to that I was given free access to this alpha as many content creators on youtube and streamers on twitch were - which is probably the only reason I logged onto the game during Canadian thanksgiving weekend. Now that said, the next test phase is in like four days - and this game is like already 4 years old or something. so I don't imagine large changes, I think as we go through the game we might see some westernization.
