Hi. Typically the ones too young, weak or old stay on the island (Assateague), along with nursing moms. Don't worry, they check everything out before. We were there in 2023. No drowning, every horse made it to Chincoteague safe and sound!

I have been to 3 swims in my life. I was told if foals look to young they go across on a boat
I’m also curious about that as well.
Also curious how, with that many horses, do the foals find their mothers if separated?
