Laura, when you go back to the states, you need to go to New Mexico and see the adobe houses. They are hundreds of years old (some of them) and working with these all natural materials, straw, clay and wood, and they have stood the test of time. You would love it and it would be interesting for you but also for your viewers to see through your lens.
In Taos new Mexico the headquarters of the earth ships, very imposing in that desert surrounded place!
It is really fascinating how the art if clay houses is so diverse- a yet to similar - across the gloe. What she vis doing is pretty close to the war the old Northern European half-timbered house was built. Not like the original house here which had bricks between the timber, but the older technique of twig lattice covered in clay.
New Mexico and even Arizona!
This for sure!! and visit these folks - @TheNitoProject
Good idea! ❤
Hi Laura!!! I love to see that you are working with clay products - I do a lot of ceramic artwork in my spare time. One of the most important things I have learned in pottery is how to do it safely. Clay particulate (called kaolin) is very toxic to the lungs when in a dry form. The aerisolized dust can cause a restrictive lung disease called silicosis. It is not dangerous at all when it is not producing dust, such as when it is mixed and wet or stuck to your walls. Because of this, whenever you are going to be making clay dust, such as when you are sanding the walls or mixing clay from a dry powder, it is really important to wear a properly fitted N95 mask to protect your lungs. I think this is especially important for you and your crew because you will be doing a lot of work with clay.
Anyway, love the series, love your commitment to sustainability, and I look forward to what you do with the house going forward. Keep it geil!
Edit: another appropriate mask to wear is a p100 respirator, which is way more comfortable than an n95. I made a Covid Freudian slip
I keep calling her out for not wearing a mask, but she keeps on doing it. i get it, they are uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as chronic emphysema.
CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!
Yes, this is so important! Pottery studios will mop instead of sweep because of how serious silicosis is. Wearing a mask to protect from clay particulate isn't on the level of like, "oh you should wear safety goggles when woodworking" or something like that (ie recommended but you can get away with it mostly). Not wearing a mask with clay particulate is as serious as not wearing PPE when demoing asbestos. Any amount of kaolin in your lungs is too much.
Another potter chiming in to second this. I actually wear a mask even when I'm changing cat litter (if it's clay) for exactly this reason.
LAURA! Are you paying attention to these posts? Blink if you understand!
It looks like your spreading hummus on the walls, but in the best way possible. Looks great!
As you want to show off the texture of the original wall, maybe you could make and attach a picture frame (traditional or contemporary style) then plaster the rest of the wall outside it. That lets you seal and finish the edges of the wall nicely, then it would look more intentional and not unfinished
I agree. In a strawbale house, people make a "truth window" to show what the inside of the walls looks like. I would do this and make it a feature, so it looks like a painting. Your house is stating to look beautiful again Laura 😊
Such cool materials that I would not even know existed were it not for this channel!
Dear Laura,
I am Orestes from the Philippines. I am one of your many subscribers. Your videos I am able to watch around 11 pm on a sunday in the Philippines. It is probably the last video that I watch on youtube before I go to sleep. I just want to say I emjoy your videos. I am a tinkerer myself. You give me a lot of ideas. I am still watching your house renovation or construction or reconstruction. What ever you want to call it. Hahahaha
But anyway, keep going, more power and more videos to come. I feel my sunday nights are incomplete when I don't catch your weekly videos.
thank you and mabuhay from the Philippines!
So adorable how happy Laura is with the clay hahaha You go girl!!!
Laura, get yourself a plaster’s hawk. It’s a board that you load up with plaster or clay compound and that saves you time and effort loading your trowel.
I've only worked with plaster here in the UK but the principal is the same. It definitely would make the job quicker.
lol
I never heard it called that. I thought it was a hod.
@@artor9175Hod's are for carrying bricks.
A hod is what bricks are carried in.
My daughter worked at a neighborhood bakery during high school. This whole video made me so hungry for cake frosting!
I love the slight roughness of the finish. It is a record of the love and manual work put into it and gives it a story to tell for generations to come.
Hi Laura, I’m renovating my 128 years old home, nearby in Limburg the Netherlands (Walbeck) and it’s so inspiring 😊. This Sunday I’m busy with the first layer of claytech mud. Love the stuff! And I was thinking about te finish and to my surprise this video 😂❤. Thanks a million en keep your enthusiasm going I’m really affected. Can’t wait to try de yosomite. But first another fifth square meters of mud to bring on.
Succes & veel plezier! 🙂
Pink with sea shells mixed in it would be stunning.
This reminds me of the plasterers working in the Anhalter Bahnhof in Berlin in the 80s. Every day for months I watched these guys perfect their work. It actually looked like fun to me.
You could use a bright lamp to make sure the wall is smooth. The light will expose any imperfections, especially the higher and lower spots.
A raking light is used to expose differences in evenness in texture or depth
... and you can leave the little imperfections too ;)
My favourite part for sure was the "You can make thousands of colours" so we went with regular clay colour.
Wow!Japanese 「NAMIKESHI KOTE」!!
I am glad to see Japanese tools being used in Germany as well!
When you buy more high end hand tools, you'll often come across Japanese products here. Handsaws, chisels, knives... expensive, but very good quality!
In the UK too, if we want good quality tools we look to Japan!
this is soooooo minor but i LOVE how you made the thumbnail outline look sort of wavy and hand carved. I did a double take when I saw it in my subscriptions and smiled
Love the channel. When I stucco, I start at the top and work down to avoid spilling on the area below. I find it works faster and cleaner. Learning about European construction and new materials is great. Thanks!
I wonder if our bodies have an affinity to working with natural materials. I've watched videos on straw bale, earth stamping and mud construction and everyone seems to be smiling. The results are so creative as well. Thank you for sharing, Laura and Felix.
Sunday is not sunday without Laura and Felix ❤
I love when Laura gets amped on a project and is like a kid playing with the natural materials! I'm exactly the same!
I was waiting for the corner trowel, it was better than I hoped!
thank you for reminding me life is kind. its a bit silly, but seeing these walls come together is making me so goddamn happy. when you showed that trowel for doing the corners!!! i literally almost shed a tear. everything is so simple and so beautiful. i just love it. thank you.
@1:20 The way you can remember is: "Hay is for horses, straw is for houses!"
Tbf straw is also used for horses, just not for eating. 😅
Or - Hay is food , straw is "waste" ( " " because it can be used for SO many things).
@@SonjaBruenzelsAnd sometimes they are just big dumbdumbs.
Thanks for the little rhyme! I’ve been trying to remember the difference, told to me by dairy friends in Holland, but long forgotten!
If you coat the timbers with linseed oil - it will both protect your timber AND make it pop more with the walls.
Ahhh this is so exciting! Part of me wants to see the visible timber frame in the hallway stained a darker colour to create more value contrast between the clay and wood :)
So satisfying to work with and apply natural clay products. It’s like playing “mud pies” when we were kids! I love the colour finishes they offer. It’ll look amazing Laura.
I wanna see vancouver carpenter get at this clay plastering, I bet he'd be magic at it.
The craftmanship of the past meets with craftsmanship of the present. Both use the earth as its foundation and strength.
Your guests will have the benefits of past and present. It would be wonderful to have pictures of the house during its many phases, including original drawings, if any. Also, have a guest book. Personally, it would be fun to read comments from previous guests. Where they were from, what they did in the area, etc .... and of course, what their impressions of the house were.
On another note , when you were troweling, I immediately thought of icing a cake. 😂
Beautiful. You, Felix and the team have put so much into this. The work ethic is amazing.
The clay tone is amazing! And it seems way more "creative" than plaster! Very cool!
I hope that you're going to have, an open house thing some day... I would just love, to see your beautiful house😊
As always, the materials look so delicious, like ice cream!
The noise I made when you brought out the trowel specifically for corners, what a marvelous thing!!
This was such a satisfying video. Almost as satisfying as painting walls with a clay finish!
In English we'd say 'clay and pigment', and it's straw in the mix - straw is the dead, dry empty 'container' of the wheat, and so doesn't contain elements that would organically degrade, which means it remains as long fibres that give strength to the plaster and help stop shrinkage cracks. Hay, on the otherhand, is grass that is cut while full of life, and thus full of organic matter that means it rots ... and although the stink dissipates quickly as it dries, (and with fermented mixes you get more of an elasticity), you lose the tensile strength as the fibre decomposes. Love this video and your excitement ♥️
I'm biased but I vote for the grey with the mica! I have one small wall finished with grey mica clay and it's stupendous 🥰
"Pigment" are you sure about that? Because I only know Pigment as the thing that adds color to stuff. That's not what she was talking about when she said Lehm and Ton (clay and clay).
The correct English term for "Lehm" would be "loam" (according to the company making that stuff and wiki).
Today I learned! Would it be correct to say that straw contains more lignin while hay has more digestible carbohydrates and starches and whatnot?
I believe Lehm is loam in English (Loam being a mixture of clay, silt, sand and organic matter) and Ton is clay.
@@Jehty_ ok so now I’m confused. I thought the Lehm was the stuff in the small tubes that you mixed to make all the different colours/shades you can use. Is it something else? What was the stuff that affected the color?
@@ellies6563 I'm sorry for causing confusion. And reading back my own comment I totally understand why.
I did a bit more research and now I am confused as well 🤣
Here is what confuses me:
Lehm (loam) is made out of Ton (clay), sand and silt.
The stuff she is putting on the wall is Lehm-Putz. So in English it should be called "Loam-plaster". But it's not. The company calls it "clay-plaster" 🤨
I don't know why.
And to answer your questions:
Ton (clay) is naturally colored. So the Ton (clay) is what gives the Lehm (loam) the color. But I still don't think that "pigment" is the correct term, because Ton (clay) is a crucial component in Lehm (loam).
The stuff in the small tubes at 0:35 is a product sample of the finished product (Lehm-putz/clay-plaster).
Oh wow, it looks FANTASTIC!!!
Laura, Hay is the green shoots that the horses eat. Straw is the brown tubes you see bundled into rectangles to shoot arrows into.
Brighter and warmer. Absolutely gorgeous.
This hallway is transforming into an incredible display of the hewn craftsmanship and developing design potential for Laura and her team. I feel empowered and excited with each step in the process.
Those scrapers would be great for cake decorating 😊
I love that you are focused on using natural materials for your home. So our buildings can be fully recyclable or compostable.... that is the right way to the future!
I like the idea of making the external walls and roof structure from basalt fiber reinforced concrete, so that you have a structure made from minerals that will survive 1000 years, then instead of demolishing the structure every 30 years when it goes out of style, you just replace the wooden internal walls and refinish the concrete walls using natural materials like these. Throwing away 30 year old buildings is a huge problem not just for disposing of the materials and producing new materials, but also for the labor involved. It's a huge waste of human productivity, not to mention the resources wasted in construction workers traveling and bringing equipment to work sites.
The clay seems to have a very complimentary texture to your original plaster accent wall. And from what I have heard, so much easier to work with than plaster. It looks REALLY cool.
It would be fun to get a plaque for the original wall left standing. Like the kind they put on historical buildings.
This video makes me happy. I don't know why but i like the way when you are happy. Weird but nice.
I love the music choices. The house is looking amazing! I like when you tell us the German/English words for things in the video.
I like the idea of it being naturally coloured rather than painted, and it can be smoothed off, a very nifty product :D
I'm just gonna say that I've stopped this video a couple of times to look into home repair tutorials to start doing at home. You are inspiring and this series is so good. Love what you're making.
So I just watched 20 minutes long video about putting a colour clay on the wall. :) Not boring at all! I would like to play with the clay :)
Wow!! Excellent outcome. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing process. I so wish I could afford to have that done in the states but done at all. You not only amaze me by your forward thinking but also by your stamina and tenacity. Thank you for your site and your inspiration and creativeness also you willingness to share all of that with us.
Hi Laura & Felix! Love that you can add color! Your walls will be absolute Art Work just like your whole home! Laura how is your knee? I see you’re still limping. Please be careful with your knee Laura🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
Lovely. So smart to do an area that you see when you first enter.
That's a lovely color for the wall! It will be bright and inviting!
you could make a whole video on just smoothing the walls, it's so satisfying
Nice job Laura
Beautiful job, color is perfect, you shy be proud
Es sieht so schön aus. Wahnsinn!
Lovely stuff. Again, takes me back to the 1950s and roaming around lumberyards and building centers in LA with my father as he searched out the latest innovative building materials for use in his neverending redesigns of our house.
I hope I can feel half as happy about anything as Laura was about trowling that clay
It must be so satisfying, to finally finish things, rather than ripping them open or out!
Thank you Leo for continuing work on the roof.
Realised that I hadn't hit 'like' on many of your videos so I went back through them all. I can't believe how many you've made! I love this series! ❤❤❤
When you are applying it looks so much like humous! Tasty
Your technique for measuring the curve of the wall was incredibly clever! Definitely a skill I'm going to hang on to for future use.
Your work inspires me to build new things and see things I moght normally throw out as useful material. 💚
Such fun watching you thoroughly enjoy the whole experience Laura. The house is going to look stunning & what a welcoming the entrance is well done 👏 ✔️ 👍
Reminds me of cake decorating and a beautiful smooth icing.
Very nice!!! ❤
About naming inventions:
If it's a totally new thing, I think just naming it makes sense.
If it's an improvement or different approach to something that has a name, it can make sense to add the inventor's name to it and/or something about the improvement.
I am coughing just watching all the clay particulates flying into the air
Absolutely stunning! And it must feel sooooo nice 👌
You need a board to tip the mix on to, then a plasterers hawk. You then use your towel to knock the mix from the board to the hawk, then hawk to the wall. Will save you digging in the bucket every 30sec
I love your show. I live in British Columbia, Canada and found you by happenstance. After I make my tea on Sunday morning I sit down to enjoy you, Felix and the process.
Looks great!!! I have never worked with this material, but when you are applying near the wood beams, maybe have a damp sponge nearby that you can use to wipe off any clay that gets on the wood.
looks amazing already. i think you going to rethink your plan where to live with your family, once the house is done. it will be stunning for sure!
Love the color❤️❤️
I am officially a fan of clay. I had no idea that it comes in so many colors, textures, and looks. Very nice.
I really love to see your joy!
It turned out stunning ❤
This looks cool & feels like a task in which one could maintain enthusiasm naturally.
It's like the icing on the cake, in more ways than one. Cheers.
Im so happy to see your journey
Oh gosh Laura, it's perfect!!! You can already tell that it's drying lighter and you can always stain the wood if it doesn't age to suit the space. In spite of it being a MUCH more intense project than you anticipated, you and your team are really giving it all the respect it needs.
Wow - looks really great 😍!
We used Yosima throughout the house. All walls and ceilings. We still love it so much and it was so easy to work with. I would do it again and again.
Where are you located ? I am in the USA & wonder about availability ?
@@m.maclellan7147 I live in Central Europe. I just checked Claytec's homepage. Unfortunately, they do not sell their products in the USA. Maybe there is another manufacturer that sells such products? A Google search “clay plaster” will help.
Die Farbe passt super zur Treppe!
Looks amazing!
Looking amazing, can't wait to see more. You've all put so much work into this and the love and effort really shines through!
So great to see you getting joy from the house again!
The finish is really amazing! Loving this series so much!!!
I’m so happy for you. It’s all amazing!!
looks so beautiful laura!
Ow wow, that looks so good! You're an excellent sales-rep for ClayTec hahaha... I'm already envisioning how to use their products around my house :)
I am living for the excitement and exclamations coming from Laura and the team as they get to play with some more fun materials 😊
This material feels very HUMAN. Very lo-tech, ancient, warm and fleshy rather than hardshell synthetic.
You need a plaster hawk to avoid all of the digging and bending. Nice job! Love it!
Letting your clay sit after mixing and absorbing water is called "to slake" in english. Also, your small trowel will stay on the lip of the bucket if you stick it with a bit of clay.
It looks great. I really like that product and the versatility of how you can make it look different based on how you finish it, rough to smooth plus the add ins. Love the idea of the sparkles added for your kids' room.
It kind of reminds me of walls in the adobe homes of the southwest of the U.S.
It feels so perfectly real ❤
please don’t forget to wear masks to take precautions while working with clay. A main component of clay is silica and increased exposure to silica dust can give you lung cancer. (You probably already know this but just felt a little nervous)
Look out. Working with clay is addictive!
That looks great! I think there should be a tool to do the corners like a wedged shaped trowel so you can smooth out the corners as easy as the walls! Well never mind, I was a little hasty when I made the comment. The next step was a corner trowel!
Very satisfying watching the clay turn smooth. It was very ASMRish, but for the eyes!
when I saw you use the corner trowel I FREAKED OUT it looks so great!!!!
