My friend wanted to do a casted paperweight and was new to fused glass. So, I had her watch this video for instructions before starting the project. The piece turned out beautifully.

About the time I think I’ve seen all of your videos, I re-watch one and learn something new. I’ve noticed that about yours and Tabitha’s especially. When I use the frit pulverizer I tend to save the smallest (fine and powder) for background color in landscape pieces. The purple (you extravagant guy!) and green made me think of your underwater piece… good background and beach ‘rubble’ material. I imagine it’s long gone but in case you make more…. Thanks again for your generous sharing

I finally got my heart mold. Everything went well. My only problem was 1st, I needed to fire again because the top was lumpy not smooth, then 2nd is that I could see the lines faintly where the clear glass merged after second firing, maybe a bit of dvit...so I applied super spray and fired it one last time. Yay it worked! I was wondering, if I'd like to experiment to have the bottom side up in order to shine. Perhaps I'd like to fire it without the mold, flat side down. Can you recomend a schedule. Contour? Fire polish? I understand I can put bumper dots, but people have said they like it more the other way...flat side down. I appreciate all your content. I have learned so much, and am always learning, and not afraid to try something new. I feel that the fails have often lead to new creations. The mother of invention for me.

Off topic a little, I have the same frit maker and have used it only twice because even though I thought I cleaned the heck out of it, the way they say to clean it, the next project had very small bits of the previous colour that I chopped. I mean VERY small fragments, like dust really, but because of the colour I could see them in my next project. Any tips on getting that thing super clean so I don’t have a repeat performance lol ?? I typically just try to wipe it out with a DRY rag (don't want to introduce moisture/rusting) and maybe blow it out with some compressed air (with my mask and safety glasses on, of course).

I have wondered the same and may try it some day. I worry about a fire polish temp causing it to spread out a bit since it’s so thick but I need to try sometime and find out. I do like the look of the tick layer of clear, so if I flipped and fused, I think I’d reverse build it with clear in first and colored frit on “top.”
I have the same question - I have a smaller BE heart pendant mold and the bottom is the molded part. I wonder if I turn it over and do a fire polish if I can get it nice enough to use as the front of the pendant.

One more question. My clear scrap has a green edge as most clear does. Do you use this scrap or the water/crystal clear? Just concerned that the green edge scrap will discolor the other colors in the heart. Making hearts with ashes. Thanks!
I’ve never used anything but standard Bullseye Tekta (not crystal clear). If in doubt, make a test piece without ashes. Nothing is wrong with taking your time and making a prototype. If you have to fire your ashes first anyway, make the glass prototype in the same firing?
Great video Jamaison! I have the cast iron heart mold that has 9 slots for hearts. Using BE glass, can I use YOUR firing schedule in the cast iron mold? Thx
Loved this video, but wondered if there’s a way to make the bottom shiny so that you could have a rounded top and flat bottom? Have you tried the opposite: putting the tekta in first then colored in last? Just curious!
Yup, that’s exactly what I’ve been doing more of lately and it works well. I fire polish for a really nice look (1250° for 90 min works well in my kiln).
I made a follow-up video - look in my channel for “Fire Polishing the Heart Paperweight.” In the video, I mentioned 1200° and I’ve since started using the 1250° for an even nicer finish.
Once again, great video. Can you use a microwave kiln for these? A had a smaller heart stick to my mold and it broke. The mold that is. Hard to say... can you experiment and try it? If it spreads too much, perhaps you could position back on the mold in another firing to get it back to original shape?

I adore bubbly glass. You could wrap your piston with cloth so you don’t get steel in your glass.

I get molds from all sorts of sources, including directly from Colour de Verre.

You’d have to run a fire polish again after taking it out of the mold.
What did you use so the glass does not stick.
I use Zyp boron nitride spray
