On the late night of Friday 8 July 2005, a unique and historic jam session took place at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. The Bird Session featured an all star lineup of musicians, personally selected by keyboard legend Joe Zawinul and bebop master, pianist Barry Harris. It was a celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the festival and of the fiftieth dying day of Charlie Parker. This is a video impression of the first part of the session, where the band played the song Perdido.
For this occasion Joe Zawinul and Barry Harris invited two other North Sea Bird Award winners, harmonica legend Toots Thielemans and Dutch saxophonist Toon Roos. Also guitarist John Scofield, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Bill Stewart were invited on stage.
Although not on video, the jam session that night continued with a fast blues, and after the intermission a second lineup of Bird Award winners performed with vocalist Greetje Kauffeld, saxophonists Piet Noordijk and Toon Roos, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Hein Van de Geyn and drummer John Engels.
Unfortunately Dutch television wasn’t there that night for a professional recording, yet filmmaker Dick Kuijs used two cameras and audio from the sound engineers and made an attractive video impression of the first half of the session.
2005 was the last year of the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. Since 2006 the festival is located in the AHOY in Rotterdam.
Thanks to North Sea Jazz Festival, Michelle Kuypers, Jaap Ludeke & Joe Zawinul.
Special thanks to Dick Kuijs, Bob Hagen & Jeroen Jansen for the images.

You’re welcome Romain! 😊🕺
The main tone he uses not the horn but the solo is what I like to call his underwater sound

Dank je Jan, goed te horen dat je erbij was en dat je zo genoten hebt! 🎶🌹
woah, I wasn't expecting this. Interesting to see how Joe improved with this more traditional style and to see how how didn't dominate. The tone he used for the solo was great but it didn't quite fit in with the other sounds as if Joe wanted to say yeah this is a tribute but I'm still bringing something fresh and new
The music is great but the video would have been more palatable if Scofield wasn't chewing his cud through the entire show.
