Honestly I have always been fascinated with the skill and time it takes for someone to play smash well and it's disappointing that Nintendo and Alan fucked up the event
honestly that makes sense, im not big into the super smash bros torny scenes but I have seen many very talented clips from the tornys before this one,I think it really draws out how critically you have to think in a timed event like that.
as a former competitor, you basically become so good at scenarios after playing them over and over again vs specific characters that may or may not transfer over that your thinking is much less than you'd expect. You become so accustomed to a scenario that you simply do whats best than think about it. But it requires a ton of reviewing, theorizing and learning that can be fun. Also a lot of creativity. In the end you get players doing things like Light, MKLeo and Sparg0 like gods because they believe or know it will work.
Something about Charlie’s whole demeanor is so relaxing. I’m prone to anxiety attacks often but watching his videos literally help me more than my own medicine. Thanks for that man

While the games are mostly good, from what we seen from nintendo just seems pretty unfair to not only the fans not just the people who create these events as well.

The thing that I think got a lot of people was how Nintendo and Panda both said, “Well we absolutely did not tell SWT that they needed to cancel their tournament” when it’s SO BLATANTLY OBVIOUS for anybody with the ability to read that they were, in fact, suggesting that they were canceling it. “We’re not granting you a license and you know how we feel about unlicensed commercial events using Nintendo IPs” Like sure, the decision to cancel the tournament was entirely on SWT, but Nintendo was 100% going to slap them with a Big House moment which would be way worse. I think the original statement they provided even said something like that. That they thought about just going ahead with the tournament but that they didn’t want a bunch of people to book flights and hotels and then get the rug pulled under them at the very last minute.
Had Allan responded as soon as he was called out instead of cowering behind his PR team, he could’ve saved the company (somewhat); he instead chose to take his sweet time making a post that had little to no evidence to prove his innocence.

No doubt, to him, making the smash scene famous mainstream and getting all the money for it would be the best thing to do, even if it meant sacrificing and manipulating everyone that doesn't agree with his vision. He also claimed to be 'the savior of smash', according to Boback/Sidefx. Even went out of his way to say in Nov 2021's Summit that SWT 'wouldn't exist anymore' in discussion about Panda Cup, a claim others corroborate. His motives are clear. To him, everyone is against him not because his vision is the worst, but because his vision of uniting everyone is the best and therefore people want to pull him down and be the messiah that HE is supposed to be. SWT is trying to take his rightful place, and he + Panda Cup is in the way; that's how he sees it. Even in his faults, he does not realize this foundational problem: his ideas are simply wrong; he's incapable of realizing or processing that because he's an egotistical, narcissistic maniac that doesn't understand anything but money and fame. He doesn't comprehend labors of love, he doesn't understand people doing what they do for what they love without reimbursement, he doesn't get it. Ken Hotbid Chen has been a pillar in multiple communities i was lucky to be a small part of. During my sc2 years Ken was an integral part of the community and was the one to introduce me to the smash scene (im sure along with many others) when he posted the Smash Doc on the Team Liquid forums when it dropped all those years ago. I pray im able to be healthy enough again one day to follow the example Ken has set in multiple communities that I care deeply about and be able to contribute and give back to the communities that have given me so much.
At this point following this series of events, of which I only know of because of Charlie, I can’t help but have the Super Smash Bros. Melee theme song playing in the back of my mind while listening to this video.

Nah. His statement was made under duress and the parts that are mostly conjecture/baseless theories should be ignored. I think the gambit idea was stupid but his reasoning came from the fact that he genuinely did not believe Nintendo verbally told SWT to cancel the event and the fact that SWT would not have been able to get a license by Nintendo in such a short time frame, that it was inevitable that they would not get it. His reasoning made sense because he used Panda Cup's frame of reference to get a a license which was 3 years while SWT was set up only like a year or 1.5 years at most. Not to mention with how much other TO's already hated Alan before this fiasco even happened, it seemed clear they already poisoned the well and clearly painted Alan as a snake/bad person months in advance. Fighting games have some of the best orgs in the Esports community, like the reason this failed so terribly for Alan is because he’s the only one treating the organization’s influence in the FGC as a competition. To everyone else, the FGC is all connected and supportive of the entire community as a whole, including the orgs, if one org in smash bros fails, than a different org in guilty gear would also be affected in some way, and if a good org is threatened, the entire community could come to aid them. It’s honestly a shame that any modern Nintendo Company related news nowadays is now pretty much a spit on the face to the fans or the people who consider themselves involved with the company. Nintendo just doesn't want to make smash e-sport, it's perfectly their right to do so, people just need to accept it and move on instead of trying to make it happen and victimize themselves for something they knew Nintendo had no intention to do, it was known for the last 15 years that it was never their intention, but yet people keep driving their car into a wall expecting somehow the car not to crash this time.

The thing that I think got a lot of people was how Nintendo and Panda both said, “Well we absolutely did not tell SWT that they needed to cancel their tournament” when it’s SO BLATANTLY OBVIOUS for anybody with the ability to read that they were, in fact, suggesting that they were canceling it.
“We’re not granting you a license and you know how we feel about unlicensed commercial events using Nintendo IPs”
Like sure, the decision to cancel the tournament was entirely on SWT, but Nintendo was 100% going to slap them with a Big House moment which would be way worse.
I think the original statement they provided even said something like that. That they thought about just going ahead with the tournament but that they didn’t want a bunch of people to book flights and hotels and then get the rug pulled under them at the very last minute.
Had Allan responded as soon as he was called out instead of cowering behind his PR team, he could’ve saved the company (somewhat); he instead chose to take his sweet time making a post that had little to no evidence to prove his innocence.

This whole thing feels like Allan hates Ken because he couldn’t get under his skin. Ken disagreed with Allan’s vision, (A vision that REALLY feels like something the fire nation would say) and that was the end of it. Ken didn’t budge even with all of Allan’s threats. This guy is a snake through and through, and Ken is St Patrick.

Alan felt that way about SWT and paints them as such because Alan, based on the corroboration of ALL who had the displeasure of having him as their conversation partner, wants exactly that. He wants to unify the smash scene, wants to impose his 'sanitized' vision on it, wants to be the key-holder for all smash licenses in the future, wants to push not melee but ULT forward into a 'mainstream' limelight. No doubt, to him, making the smash scene famous mainstream and getting all the money for it would be the best thing to do, even if it meant sacrificing and manipulating everyone that doesn't agree with his vision.
He also claimed to be 'the savior of smash', according to Boback/Sidefx. Even went out of his way to say in Nov 2021's Summit that SWT 'wouldn't exist anymore' in discussion about Panda Cup, a claim others corroborate. His motives are clear. To him, everyone is against him not because his vision is the worst, but because his vision of uniting everyone is the best and therefore people want to pull him down and be the messiah that HE is supposed to be. SWT is trying to take his rightful place, and he + Panda Cup is in the way; that's how he sees it. Even in his faults, he does not realize this foundational problem: his ideas are simply wrong; he's incapable of realizing or processing that because he's an egotistical, narcissistic maniac that doesn't understand anything but money and fame. He doesn't comprehend labors of love, he doesn't understand people doing what they do for what they love without reimbursement, he doesn't get it. He's a classic Todd Howard/Randy Pitchford/Bobby Kotick in the making. All his statement are just gaslighting and manipulating 101 without him even realizing it because like the megalomaniac he is, he truly believes his viewpoint is right and there's no other way to see it.
I still cannot believe Alan is trying to play the victim in all this. My dude has the entire Smash community saying he's a toxic man-child and he still acts like he's the one being wronged.

Ken Hotbid Chen has been a pillar in multiple communities i was lucky to be a small part of. During my sc2 years Ken was an integral part of the community and was the one to introduce me to the smash scene (im sure along with many others) when he posted the Smash Doc on the Team Liquid forums when it dropped all those years ago. I pray im able to be healthy enough again one day to follow the example Ken has set in multiple communities that I care deeply about and be able to contribute and give back to the communities that have given me so much.

At this point following this series of events, of which I only know of because of Charlie, I can’t help but have the Super Smash Bros. Melee theme song playing in the back of my mind while listening to this video.
When your "The Truth" statement opens with a lie that is so easy to debunk it's smashed within seconds, the remaining portions of your statement can be ignored wholesale, in my opinion.
Nah. His statement was made under duress and the parts that are mostly conjecture/baseless theories should be ignored. I think the gambit idea was stupid but his reasoning came from the fact that he genuinely did not believe Nintendo verbally told SWT to cancel the event and the fact that SWT would not have been able to get a license by Nintendo in such a short time frame, that it was inevitable that they would not get it. His reasoning made sense because he used Panda Cup's frame of reference to get a a license which was 3 years while SWT was set up only like a year or 1.5 years at most.
Not to mention with how much other TO's already hated Alan before this fiasco even happened, it seemed clear they already poisoned the well and clearly painted Alan as a snake/bad person months in advance. Then, when they couldn't get a license and believed they had to cancel, they blamed Panda/Alan for influencing Nintendo which Nintendo very clearly state themselves they have rigid standards and that Alan did not influence their decision.
Alan and Mick Gordon are officially arch-nemesis of responses to drama.

Fighting games have some of the best orgs in the Esports community, like the reason this failed so terribly for Alan is because he’s the only one treating the organization’s influence in the FGC as a competition. To everyone else, the FGC is all connected and supportive of the entire community as a whole, including the orgs, if one org in smash bros fails, than a different org in guilty gear would also be affected in some way, and if a good org is threatened, the entire community could come to aid them. Alan treats the community like everyone is against each other, but everyone is just against him, because he’s actively harming the community, and he needs to be removed.
