Not all stories are happy endings. But not all are really bad either. Sometimes its a chance for us to write new beginnings. This other person seems like an improvement and, while I'm sorry , we can't always look back and count the reasons to find our actions reggretable, so no matter how sweetly as you put it there is no going back.
