John Constantine walking though a living body smeared out over the walls when seeking the pouch of sand. Jed's abuse, he gets punched in the gut in the novel. Resurrected Abel telling Goldie a tale of a kind elder brother who'd never hurt his little brother. And he was sad while telling the story. In the series he was weirdly happy like it didn't matter at all that he gets murdered on a regular basis. The series lack the gravitas of the novel. And the race and gender swapping is just forced and destroys immersion.
He may be a nightmare in the show, but he seems like a dream come true as far as casting was concerned. And just plain dreamy, given the general public's reception of him.
14:57 Tom started using his "Dream" voice. Didn't seem conscious, but I was floored that he can switch it on like that. I thought there was some post-production manipulation/enhancement that had to happen, but well...
Sandman could literally be Netflix's best show ever, a draw on par or surpassing Stranger Things (which I also absolutely adore). I hope we get the full story with this cast and crew.
We'll also be getting a bonus episode, from what I've seen online. They'll be adapting some of the more contained stories from the comic and there are a lot of those, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were more bonus episodes incoming. It's actually a great way to tide people over between seasons and adapt some of the issues that wouldn't flow as organically within the seasons (since they'd be seen as filler).
After I had seen that The Sandman had come out after waiting for it, I watched all the episodes in a day and a half. I have rewatched it and I really appreciate all of the hard work that was put in by the actors and all of the other people that worked on the show behind the scenes. The outcome was amazing and I can't wait to see the next season.
@@Aussie_Stitch You are right, I find it amazing that you can tell the amount of love that the actors have for the comics just by listening to them talk about it.
I'm new to The Sandman and episode 5 almost made me stop watching. Ep. 6 has taken up residence in my mind. I'm going to re-watch the whole season just because of that episode.
What I love about this is the fact that we get to see Neil Gaiman discuss a TV show he guided into creation, based on a series of comics that he created. How rare is it that the creator of the source content is able to be so hands on with the creation of its live action adaptation. I'm glad the fans are happy, myself included. I'm even more pleased Neil Gaiman is proud of it.
For those yet to know about it: He also did a fantastic adaptation for a novel that he wrote with Terry Pratchett - Good Omens. It's on Amazon Prime or blu- ray/ DVD
It's even more surprising to see an adaption he was heavily involved in work so well when, on the other hand, you have the mis-fire that is American Gods S2. Whoooo-boy.
Watching him nerd out about Dream is like listening to a recording someone took of me rambling about my favorite comic book characters. His understanding of the character and passion for the story really served him well in the role.
I’ve never been so pleased with an adaptation like I am with this one. I watched it alone over two nights and had to keep myself from clapping whenever an Endless was introduced or my favorite parts of the comics were on screen. It’s utterly beautiful and perfect in every way. I don’t mind at all any of the changes made, I see them as improvements by someone who grew after writing it and saw a better way of telling the story. I think the scene with Lucifer was my absolute favorite. Fiddler’s Green was beautiful also, and Desire is beyond my expectations. I am so happy, I feel like a kid all over again. I hope it implores watchers who have never read the comics, to start now and fall in love like I have.
I find every change to be an improvement. I've been reading issues before and after each episode, and every change streamlined, updated, or otherwise improved the comics. That said, I can't believe how close it sticks to the comic. Pretty amazing.
I mean, it was clearly put in there as the very first clip to make him uncomfortable/get a reaction. It didn't even have anything to do with the question. Not a classy move, in my opinion.
I dived into this show without any prior knowledge of it, just knowing it was created by Neil... so glad! Every episode was better than the last. Cast is amazing and I can't wait for the next season!
14:56 to 16:23 is just, so great. 🖤 Especially the part at the end when Tom says, "If I can feel this about these people after such a short space of time, how do I feel about a man who I've spent 600 years with? And so he returns to him." 😭🙏
If Netflix doesn't do the second season of Sandman I cancel my subscription! Best series ever. Tom's acting is so intense and perfect that it takes your breath away, pure emotion
I'm glad they decided to turn this into series instead of a movie, because it would've been too short to tell not just the story, but the philosophy within it. The Sandman is indeed a brilliant masterpiece.
The most humanizing thing in this interview is how embarrassed half of the actors seem to be watching their own performances, despite having given GREAT performances
Toms energy is awesome! he really excited about the show and its possible future! and seems like he is still trying to learn from other actors as well watching them perform with interest and giving praises. he has a such a cool vibe. nice sweat also qulity emo! ı think he is really cool person to hang out with.
He seems like a guy I could just sit down and chat about comics with for hours on end (endlessly, even). It's really refreshing to see someone so passionate about the story and character in the leading role. Like a dream come true for both him and the fans (which includes him again because he's clearly also one).
Love the way Tom is fanboying Boyd here lol They are so charismatic and talented, Everyone in Sandman are talented af. I like ep. 5 with David Thewlis in that, and the eps 7-10 are incredible..truly Love the show. Hope to see ss2 with all of them powerful siblings using their powers against e/o, and yes the comeback of the Corinthian (Boyd) ; my fave character. Need more scenes of Lord Morph and his little nightmare Corinthian again.
I had never heard of the DC comic The Sandman so when I watched the first season the way Tom looked intrigued me and drew me in to keep watching. Tom did an AMAZING job!
THE SANDMAN might have become my favorite show at all times. This show gave me everything I've been looking in every kind way. A masterpiece has been re created. Such a quality content. Allan Heinberg has such adorable, deep eyes. he seems like a wholesome human being. Tom Sturridge is indeed emo inside out and i absolutely love it.
Such an amazing cast, I've never seen a better adaptation in my life. Not just the way they act, but the way they all feel about these characters. A separate bow to Tom, his acting is the main thing in all his works, but what has been done here is inspiring. Not only facial expressions but also articulation, voice timbre, and emotions. I am not an English-speaking person, but from the first 10 minutes, I realized that I MUST hear the original voice acting. It wasn't easy, and I should probably rewatch it again, maybe again, but hearing it in the original is definitely worth all my years of struggling with the English language (:D)
I had never heard of The Sandman comics and I'm absolutely loving this show and have decided to start reading the comics. I feel all the actors have nailed their characters. I love it
I mostly know him from "Logan" and every time he appeared in a scene, I was like "you're just a dude with a robot hand, this is the X-Men universe, so why is my butthole clenching every time you appear on screen?" He makes for an amazing villain.
Sandman fan since the early 90s... what an absolutely beautiful rendition of the story! Wonderful cast, fantastic acting all around... you have every right to be immensely proud of this oeuvre. I had high expectations and you exceeded them! The Gaiman touch -- everything with which he is involved turns into something exquisitely beautiful.
I didn’t expect to love the sandman as much as I now do, it was so so so beautiful to see so many queer characters and relationships in something that falls under the fantasy genre, I was so so so happy to finally see representation in fantasy!! Not only that, but the way queer characters were not characters focused on their sexual/gender identities, but first and foremost introduced as complex human beings, who *happen* to be queer, it’s just so refreshing to see. Such an amazing series!
Watching this show was what I imagine it was like for George RR Martin book fans finally seeing Game of Thrones on the screen, the whole time I was like, "That was MARTIN GODDAMN TENBONES!" or "These guys are planning the CEREAL CONVENTION EEEEEEEEE!" or "Oh noooooooooooooooo he's going into a diner, oh noooooooooooo". It's so amazing to finally see all of this come to life!
This show and Moon Knight is by my favorite shows to date. Both unbelievably showcases and written so well. I’m gonna go read the books of the sandman to get a glimpse of will happen next. Netflix, you better give them a season 2!
even though I'm not a comic fan, this show literally blows my mind and thrills me. The best show I have ever seen, the plot the scenes and also everyone's performance. My personal fav part is the part where David Thewlis as John Dee control everyone in the restaurant. That scene is so chaotic to me, I didn't know what was happening but I do enjoy it very much. The fight between Lucifer and Morpheus is my second fav scene, although Morpheus final answer is kinda cheesy to me.... but anyway, still my fav scene which is how I imagine the powerful gods (?) fighting, like not just some sort of sword fighting or throwing spells to each other.
I looked forward to sitting down to an episode every single afternoon after work and it made me feel invigorated and energized and alive in a way it’s been a long time since any story and even longer since any show has grabbed me in this way. Truly special and truly masterfully crafted.
Honestly, her first episode could've functioned pretty well as a pilot for a Constantine series (though I think HBO is already planning a series surrounding the contemporary version, which is why they couldn't have used John, anyway). I think we'll mostly see her ancestor in flashbacks after this, but it'd be cool if we got more of her present-day counterpart, too. Especially with her and Tom Sturridge's Dream's chemistry. Constantine also has history with Swamp Thing in the comics (as does Matthew the Raven before he became a raven and Cain and Abel), so what would be really cool is if they revived the Swamp Thing series and had Jenna Coleman's version pop up there. I think she'd fit perfectly into that show.
Tom Sturridge and all the cast have stunning & brilliant performance. Kudos to the writer, director and to the creator of the Sandman. Love it!! Hope to have season 2. Thank you Netflix.
Great interview! The answers are great. I love Tom’s understanding of Dream’s character. I don’t enjoy perfect characters. Dream is flawed but we understand why he is that way.
I came into watching The Sandman with zero knowledge of it being a DC comic, and I'm really glad for that. There's a sort of stigma associated with Marvel and DC comics movies which probably would've biased me... I don't think it would've hit as hard as it did if I'd known it was DC beforehand. Having not read the comics beforehand, series felt like some sort of Greek Epic.
I really hate the fact that producers aren't allowed to say "we couldn't get the rights to John Constantine" and instead are forced to say "we randomly decided to take on this creative challenge." It's fine, we all know why you switched John to Johanna, we all get it, just say so. You did a great job with the switch. But we all know that if you didn't have to make that switch, you wouldn't have.
Also save the budget to have the old 18th century joanna and modern day joanna as the same actor, gotta keep the small cast! They will come back to the old joanna in the season 2 I think! Good choice of the show I think!
I am head over heels with the sandman series. It was so well executed until it like a true story. It has truly allowed me the opportunity to walk in fantasy land and want to go back again.
One thing that really stood out for me with the first episode was that there isn't anything sexual about Dream's nakedness. It is very obvious that he isn't like that by choice, and he just looks wronged and vulnerable and bare, rather than sexy (though he is very sexy in general). So I quite disliked how the interviewer here talks about Tom's body WHEN HE'S CLEARLY SO UNCOMFORTABLE. If you don't see how not ok this is imagine how creepy it would have felt if it was a man talking about a woman's naked body like this.
Tom is a brilliant actor and I’m so glad that he is a fan himself. Makes it even better. He knew exactly how to make Dream interesting, intimidating, sweet and mysterious. I can’t wait for season 2 but I hope this time they have more dreaming and Morpheus because it was missing in episodes 7-9. Not my favorite story arc
Felicia, I love watching your interviews. You come with your questions as a true fan, and you can tell how much thought you've put into these interviews. I even think the actors are amazed at the depth of your questions and comments. It's such a joy to watch.
Wrong. I read the comic WHEN it came out. I can tell you, it wasn't almost all gay relationships and many of the characters were not black. The preponderance of wokism and tokenism was very obtrusive, and competed with the stories as the main theme. I don't blame it on Netflix. In fact, it looks like Gaiman wanted this. I laugh at how you sjw clowns "think" you "know" so much when you know so little.
Yeap! Tom is a brilliant actor and adorable person. I really felt for him in this interview, because he was soo embarrassed. I imagine how relieved he was when it was over. I'm introverted and rather shy too... I've seen plenty of Tom's interviews and when he feels comfortable he totally rocks!😊Smart people keep saying Tom is INFP personality type and I believe them, because I'm INFP too 😅In the past I thought it's pretty fucked up to be INFP... So I genuinely admire Tom as a person and an actor ❤Take care and see you around!
I swear that The Sandman is absolutely the best show I have seen in such a long time! It is very very well done. The writers did such an incredible job! Seriously this show is phenomenal! I hope this show gets the recognition that it so very much deserves. Can’t wait for more of The Sandman! I’m looking forward to more seasons in the future!

I binge watched the series and I am watching it again for a second time, this time trying to savour each episode. I have also started to read the graphic novels it was based on. I love this story so much!
This made me realise the only time we hear Dream yell is when Joanna is exorcising the demon, quite striking given how he barely speaks above a murmur the rest of the time
Tom Sturridge is so cool acts so well, he portrays strong and intimidating Dream character but he looks actually shy and low profiled you can see his passion getting nerd with the character.
This does feel dream-like 😁 .. coolest thing is seeing each person in and out of character, the work is a mastery of emotional upheaval and crossing the lines of what was once impossible to convey/achieve in television, beautifully cinematic and a force for this cast in its preserved state as the story continues to unfold in this timeless floating hourglass of dramatic dark and curious telling. 🤗 Thank-you sooo much
I adore Felicia Day. I had the pleasure of meeting her at a convention once and she was great. She's a full on geek so it was like talking to a peer rather than a celebrity. They really nailed the casting for this season. With emphasis on Dream, Desire and Gilbert. Kirby Howell-Baptiste was great as Death but after listening to the audioplay on Audible (which I strongly recommend) I have a personal preference for Kat Dennings as Death.
I think every actor managed to make their character grab the attention of the viewer. I`ll be sad when or if the Corintian isnt in the show anymore cuz even if he is like a minor villain i love the way the writers and the actor did him. His constant little smile and his voice and the fact he acts on his own motives makes him a mixed character. Like he doesnt just kill people , he will ally with them yes for his own gain but still be in a way friendly towards some humans if they have some use to him.
I loved the Sandman comics. And I love this Netflix series, with the similarities, differences and everything. With Gaiman fully onboard, there can’t be any complaints that this series strayed from the source material either. Gaiman IS the source material.
I have volumes 1-6 of The Sandman, and it is one of my favorite graphic novels of all time. I love the show and the cast so much! I'm just happy that Neil was able to be involved and have his creation be perfectly executed since he's been pushing for a Sandman project for years.
Great series, Tom played his role fantastically, I am in love with the series and of course Sandman, I love Death and the exorcist, all the rest are great, I wish you further success
Dream Lord has such a sexy accent. Just equally sexy in real life 😂. His character just speaks so eloquently and the way he delivers his line. “It is not yours to receive nor mine to give”. That line just really stood out to me from the show.
Funny how none of the people whining about changes to the characters are mentioning Boyd as the Corinthian even though the writer says that’s the character that changed the most🙄
This show was so much more than I anticipated. I knew Neil was he Helming but I just still didn't think it would be as good as it turned out. I don't think even he imagined it would be so damn good. It's amazing. My favorite show now and Netflix better have big plans to keep this alive. Far better than any other Netflix original series other than Stranger things and it could be better than that given the second season is as good as the first.
This is a really special show, being a fan of the comics for years I was obviously skeptical...however, ALL of my expectations were blown away, every single decision was carefully made to tell this beautiful story and then some. I hope Netflix does the right thing and approves a second season.

Boyd Holbrook is an underrated actor.
and so hot... 😁
he's fun in Narcos, such a delight seeing him here
I get the feeling he's now no longer underrated. He did an excellent job as The Corinthian. The entire cast was immaculate.
He may be a nightmare in the show, but he seems like a dream come true as far as casting was concerned. And just plain dreamy, given the general public's reception of him.
Damn his lips.
25:42 Tom talking about Boyd "I will go outside and kill for this man right now". LITERALLY SAME
14:57 Tom started using his "Dream" voice.
Indeed has potential to be the best live action material DC has ever had produced
Netflix also did a good job with The Witcher i think
@@zulalll very much so. I’m not trying to say Netflix doesn’t have some amazing stuff, I just feel like Sandman is a cut above.
Sadly it won't. Stranger Things pleases everyone, but Sandman (the series) already has many haters for being ""too woke"" :/
@@zulalll Not as good as The Sandman tho. Well, that's the perks of having the author himself supervise the production.
I’m actually hurt I finished the whole season in two days… it was sooooo good! One of the best adaptations I have ever watched!
Same! Good things end so fast!
SAMEEE
After I had seen that The Sandman had come out after waiting for it, I watched all the episodes in a day and a half. I have rewatched it and I really appreciate all of the hard work that was put in by the actors and all of the other people that worked on the show behind the scenes. The outcome was amazing and I can't wait to see the next season.
Hopefully Netflix won't kill it. I hope they make all the season to cover all the comics.
Same. I absolutely loved it. And the casting was amazing
@@benrom916 they would be incredibly foolish to axe this show
@@Aussie_Stitch You are right, I find it amazing that you can tell the amount of love that the actors have for the comics just by listening to them talk about it.
@@pixel_pillow Very true
Episode 6 is so beautiful, definitely the most whimsical episode for me.
Loved it up until and including that banging techno track over the credits. Phuqing epic!
if you liked that episode I feel like you should make sure you dont die until watching Being Human (UK) reminded me so much of that show
Episode 6 so wholesome and like he said you need it after episode 5
I'm new to The Sandman and episode 5 almost made me stop watching. Ep. 6 has taken up residence in my mind. I'm going to re-watch the whole season just because of that episode.
Episode 6 deserves a whole movie. What a plot!
For those yet to know about it:
He also did a fantastic adaptation for a novel that he wrote with Terry Pratchett - Good Omens. It's on Amazon Prime or blu- ray/ DVD
@@JL-zw3tj Good Omens is so good! Can't wait for season 2!
It's even more surprising to see an adaption he was heavily involved in work so well when, on the other hand, you have the mis-fire that is American Gods S2.
Whoooo-boy.
Tom Strurridge is amazing as Morpheus. Great voice work. Great cast, beautiful haunting visuals. Bring on Season 2!
Totally agree
I just love how much of a fanboy Tom is, he is PERFECT.
Watching him nerd out about Dream is like listening to a recording someone took of me rambling about my favorite comic book characters. His understanding of the character and passion for the story really served him well in the role.
@@Kyran1996 same haha I get so passionate talking whatever I love
@@kenten totally agree!
Agreed!,
I Loved Desire
@@jcnextgeneration That throaty voice!
This was 11/10 on each episode.
The fight and The diner scene will forever live in my mind.
you mean diner?
@@alvadagansta missed that, thanks mate!
I find it adorable the way Tom gets uncomfortable with his naked scenes but I also love seeing him talk about joining the DC universe
And so he returns to him." 😭🙏
The diner episode was one of the most stunningly incredible pieces of media that I’ve ever seen. Movie, show, whatever.
It was beyond acting.
If Netflix doesn't do the second season of Sandman I cancel my subscription! Best series ever. Tom's acting is so intense and perfect that it takes your breath away, pure emotion
Honestly, same for the dead boys detectives show
I'm glad they decided to turn this into series instead of a movie, because it would've been too short to tell not just the story, but the philosophy within it. The Sandman is indeed a brilliant masterpiece.
The most humanizing thing in this interview is how embarrassed half of the actors seem to be watching their own performances, despite having given GREAT performances
I would’ve wanted to hear them talk more about the making of hell and the battle between dream and Lucifer. My favorite episode ever, in any series
That episode was my favorite too watched it 3 times.
Tom did an AMAZING job!
thanks netflix for giving me yet another unobtainable celebrity crush in the form of the literal king of dreams
This was the best cast for Sandman ✨HANDS DOWN✨
Pppp....,,most m ...p
I love it
You’re in for a treat, I only wish i could read it for the first time again.
i can't even imagine what wearing prosthetics for the corinthian's eyes were like, boyd was PHENOMENAL and i'm so proud of him!
I mostly know him from "Logan" and every time he appeared in a scene, I was like "you're just a dude with a robot hand, this is the X-Men universe, so why is my butthole clenching every time you appear on screen?" He makes for an amazing villain.
@@elbruces Watch the first season of Narcos on Netflix for some quality Boyd.
I think it was cgi
@@ratposting He might have worn green or blue scleral lenses but the mouth-eyes were definitely CGI.

Boyd Holbrook did an amazing job... I love him so much!!!
Tom's reaction at 3:15 is just so hilarious
Hob Gadling is one of my favorite characters- it was so fun to see him brought to life
Nice interview! Hope we get more of the amazing Tom Sturridge (of course) but also Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong and Gwendoline Christie!
I loved the sandman in my teens and then got into asoiaf in my twenties. This.
This show and Moon Knight is by my favorite shows to date. Both unbelievably showcases and written so well. I’m gonna go read the books of the sandman to get a glimpse of will happen next. Netflix, you better give them a season 2!
tom is literally a dream 😫
even though I'm not a comic fan, this show literally blows my mind and thrills me.
Best Netflix adaptation ever, of the best comic!! I love Sandman so much.
Can’t express how much I absolutely adore this comic and the show does such good work to capturing that magic
I really love johanna constantine’s moments, hope we get more of that.
Same
I would love a spinoff series around her. She nailed the Constantine character *so well.*
True bro! What if it's John but yeah Johanna is cool too
They don't want to annoy DC WB. They are still their bosses
I'm fairly sure that Neil did come out and almost-say it at least once on twitter; but yeah, totally agreed.
It is weird that they were able to nick Johns backstory though
Yes, more Felicia Day please!
I was hooked on the first episode and loved it to bits, Tom did excellently!
I find it funny when people(who obviously don’t know the original sandman novels)call this series woke and blame it on Netflix.
Right? Lile, do u even know what Neil wrote? BACK IN THE 80s!!!
@@OzyEdoTorrealba exactly. We don’t give Neil the credit he deserves especially of how society was back then
@@Nokomisclub The original comic was known for being “woke” for the time so of course Gaiman would take it up to another level 40 years later 🙄
@@Nokomisclub and yet you're thinking that you know more than Neil Gaiman himself. Check yourself first.
I loved Boyd as Corinthian!!! His character to me was very interesting 😎🔥
Tom has the tiniest energy which shows what an amazing actor he is because holy shit his portrayal of Dream...
3:15 How cute was Tom's reaction
Boyd's The Corinthian is definitely an upgrade.
Now this was a faithful adaptation, as a big Sandman fan, I am in joy!!!
Just finished the series and oh my god this show met my expectations perfectly, I want a season 2 sooo bad!!!
Sandman has become one of my favorite shows so fast - it was time since netflix produced something like this... I'm in LOVE with this world, and i just started the audiobook of the comics bc i cant get enOUGH! i want more and I'm praying for more seasons, please netflix give us more seasons.
This series exceeded my expectations...by a LOT. I really hope there will be a second season.
It’s beyond excellent. Well done , cast, crew and of course the writer himself.
Now, Netflix please don’t cancel this one! Cheers!
"I am sure people are having dreams about you, Tom.
The fandom is rabid"
this is so real XD
After watching the Sandman I read almost all of the comics and started writing several fanfics, that's how you know the series is good
I binge watched the series and I am watching it again for a second time, this time trying to savour each episode.
Sturridge has become a new favourite. He has such a wonderful energy in interviews
This does feel dream-like 😁
.. coolest thing is seeing each person in and out of character, the work is a mastery of emotional upheaval and crossing the lines of what was once impossible to convey/achieve in television, beautifully cinematic and a force for this cast in its preserved state as the story continues to unfold in this timeless floating hourglass of dramatic dark and curious telling.
🤗 Thank-you sooo much
One of the best, if not the best in Netflix. The adaptation, the acting, directing, graphics, just beautiful.
It's so great to hear Tom talk so passionately about being a fan prior to being cast. He loves the story and it shows here, and in his performance.
I do like that they all kinda have elements of their characters in how they've dressed
Is that why Tom and Neil are twinsies?
"Little tiny mouth eyes" I'm dead. I died 🤣🤣💀
Given how great this 1st season is and there is so much more material to adapt, I think Netflix has finally found it's replacement for Stranger Things
Lovely interview. Tom is such a sandman fan and an excellent actor. Excellent casting and show!!
I have never known I needed this adaptation so much. thanks to the glorious team and Neil himself!
I would love more of this universe, it does feel like a fairy tale come alive, and add a spinoff of Jenna's Constantine
There are more stories with Constantine in the comics, specifically Thermidore, set during the Terror in France.
They way they look at themselves on screen. I wonder do they know how great they are. I’m definitely a fan and now into comics.
After watching a great movie or show the best thing ever is to watch the aftershow
Funny how none of the people whining about changes to the characters are mentioning Boyd as the Corinthian even though the writer says that’s the character that changed the most🙄
I loved The Sandman and was very interested in seeing the commentary. Then, Felicia Day showed up on screen and now I'm going to watch it twice. 😃💛
the casting is so good that i honestly have no words
tom did such gre-not not even great its just fucking marvellous
Boyd's corinthian made the entire show for me, to be honest.
