This is the kind of basketball today's generation will never experience. Legendary Big East rivalries built on teams who's players faced off against each other for FOUR years creating drama you can't fake. St.John's, Syracuse, and Georgetown games were EVENTS. 80's and early 90's college basketball will never be equaled.
jtno2 I grew up near Syracuse and some of my best memories are from 2003. I stopped caring about NCAA when they broke up the Big East. Haven’t watched a game since Jeremi Grant and CJ Fair left. NCAA is horrible, even worse than the NFL. Bring back the real Big East, and bring back the Sonics.
There will never be anything like the original Big East in College basketball ever again. I grew up a UCONN fan and had the pleasure of watching our home team grow into a national powerhouse...but these old Cuse/Gtown games were savage. Any matchup in the Big east during this era was amazing, even Providence, BC or Seton Hall.
This was raw, unadulterated HATRED for the opponent. The world is too occupied with their cell phone driven lives, and this is why this type of raucous environment will NEVER be seen again. So glad I was able to experience this game as it happened.
@@Colstonewall Louisville vs Kentucky is right up there and UNLV vs Arizona was awesome in the late 80's, but yeah, I remember watching and reading about all the Big East clashes. Georgetown, Syracuse and St. John's had legendary players and epic battles.
IMO the 1980's was the greatest decade in college basketball history. I liken it to how many folks value the 1950s as the greatest decade for baseball. And the beauty, the power was nicely spread out over the decade. For example, I give the early 80s edge to the ACC. Then we get to the mid 80s and the Big East just absolutely trucked all other conferences. Late 80s was a little more of a toss up but I'd probably give it to the Big 10.
Additionally, Mugsy (Wake Forrest - NBA) Herman Harried (Syracuse), the Dozier Twins (South Carolina), Gary Graham (unlv), Reggie Lewis (Northeastern - NBA) were all there as well.
this was the only game I was at being from Syracuse, NY. It was truly memorable! I spoke to Rony Seikaly once for 2 hours on campus at Marshall Square. My neck ached having to look up at Rony.
This year, 1985 was the year I graduated. Three years later I worked at Syracuse University in 1988 and my schoolmate Robert Drummond (one of Syracuse University's greatest running backs) was playing for SU. I worked at the Schine Dining in 1988, was a janitor at the Hall of Languages, and also worked in the SU Bookstore for the fall season. Times were good back then.
The Unc Duke game is still the best rivalry but I understand what u mean about the 80's .......I'm a unc fan for 45 yrs and the big east was the best conference for alot of the yrs in the 80's
A few months before this, in football, #1 nebraska rolled into the carrier dome a far bigger favorite than Gtown was in this one, and left with a 9-17 loss in one of the biggest upsets in college football history.
This is the '85 Georgetown loss that doesn't get talked about. We remember Nova obviously, and even St. John's surprising them at home. But this loss for some reason sees to fly under the radar.
If someone would have told me in February 1985 that a big east team would end up beating G'town in the NCAA finals I would have guessed that it would be Syracuse, not Villanova.
The hype for this game was massive. Wherever these two played it was in front of huge crowds and in historic venues. The closest to professional high stakes boxing we'll ever see in college basketball.
I am a SU fan and I hate Georgetown but Thompson was a hall of famer coach and Ewing was/is the best player in Big East history. Thank God for Carmelo and G-MAC!!!!
and lastly, in 1988 this team you see here won the game I used to eat in the Schine Student Cafeteria. Sherman Douglas sat on my left, Derrick Coleman on my right, Rony Seikaly sat 3 seats down from me on the same side, and Brower sat on the other side of me a few seats down.
Getting out of the game was crazy. Finally getting home (and I lived close to like 10 min) took a good 20 minutes because the crowds in the street were always crazy when we, Syracuse, WON!~!~
ARGUABLY THE MOST HEATED RIVALRY IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL HISTORY! only one I can recall routinely containing scuffles and fights, because they ALL wanted to WIN so badly!!!
Pearl Washington played 2 years in the pros and was done great college player I'm 57 grew up in new York The big east was so great at this time I even forgot how many great players who had good pro careers from 81-85 and I remember pearl that is how much talent the big east had in those days it's ridiculous Eric sleepy Floyd actually scored 52 points for the golden state warriors and he played at Georgetown with Ewing and no one remembers him 😅that's how great the big east was
This 2 game losing streak showed Georgetown was vulnerable. Tough competition and some questionable coaching decisions caught up with Georgetown in NCAA Final against Villanova. Hoya basketball 🏀 hasn't been the same since
What is striking is how little the officiating is even noticed in this game. No stoppages for challenges. Yes, some calls were probably wrong or missed, but game continues. There is so much bettee flows. And they let them play. Please bring this back!
I was always amused at how John Thompson was physically bigger than just about every other individual on the bench. So when he wanted to sit down, he just dropped his butt wherever he pleased and all the players had to dive out of the way in both directions.
Does anyone have the Syracuse vs Georgetown 1985 game, Ewing's last home game?Used to have it and many others. Was an absolute blowout for the Hoyas from start to finish. Great way to send Ewing out.
Ewing, Shaq, and Kareem were always double and triple teamed in college. I actually felt bad for Shaq. Try to find the Tennessee game in his Junior year. It was so bad Dale Brown stormed the floor and went in on everybody in the press conference after the game.
13:45, 14:31. Georgetown might have been playing on the road here, but in less than a minute of video time the refs screwed the home team with a couple of total B.S. calls against them.
@ James know-nothing Winterfield - You mean these thugs financed the Big East and every other colligate programs in the US.... If you are going to tell the narrative, lets get it right! Billions of dollars are exchanged every year because of thugs as you so elegantly called them.

You are correct. This sh#t was SERIOUS!!!!!!
1:26:33 you’re absolutely correct 🍊🍊
Yep and don't forget all the other teams as well. UConn, BC, and Villanova (who won it all that year).
Amen, brother...~!!!!!!
Patrick Ewing was must see TV back in the day. Nasty, competitive, THE most elite defender, talented and most importantly a smart ball player.
He has not developed his game yet, jump shot, aggressive drive,,
I gotta agree , and this coming from a CUSE fan 🍊🍊🍊🍊

Man I wish the Big East Conference was back to this format again. This was true BIG EAST BASKETBALL 🏀
The Pearl made the game-winning play, but Raf Addison led all scorers with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Loved this team.
This was raw, unadulterated HATRED for the opponent. The world is too occupied with their cell phone driven lives, and this is why this type of raucous environment will NEVER be seen again. So glad I was able to experience this game as it happened.
I remember in elementary school watching BigEast in the 1980s an I forgot just how intensed and rabid these games were. The energy is awesome
Yeah, especially intense between these two teams. Other than UNC vs Duke (ACC) this rivalry was probably the biggest, best, in the Country.
@@Colstonewall Louisville vs Kentucky is right up there and UNLV vs Arizona was awesome in the late 80's, but yeah, I remember watching and reading about all the Big East clashes. Georgetown, Syracuse and St. John's had legendary players and epic battles.

I was at this game. Unbelievable atmosphere! Once in a lifetime
Pearl Washington, the reason that I became a Syracuse fan as a kid. He was the shit!!!!
Mannnnnnnn fa real...he inspired my game all the way
He should have stay longer in the NBA
Game note: starters Michael Brown, Reggie Williams, and David Wingate all played at Baltimore Dunbar.
Sure did and Brown ended up transferring to Clemson.
Dunbar was THE beast of HS basketball then. Mugsy Bogues and Reggie Lewis were on that same team as well.
Additionally, Mugsy (Wake Forrest - NBA) Herman Harried (Syracuse), the Dozier Twins (South Carolina), Gary Graham (unlv), Reggie Lewis (Northeastern - NBA) were all there as well.
BIG EAST WAS KING!! John Thompson the GREAT John Thompson, came to our summer camp the year before. Height of Hoya Paranoia! Awesome footage!
RIP Pearl
I didn't know he passed away, damn when did this happen
I think ESPN’s opening graphics looked so nice back then.
Pearl Washington was electric. He could get anywhere on the court. I honestly don't think I ever saw anyone stop him.
very underrated rivalry - still have some good matches even in different conferences
this was the only game I was at being from Syracuse, NY. It was truly memorable! I spoke to Rony Seikaly once for 2 hours on campus at Marshall Square. My neck ached having to look up at Rony.
THIS MAN. THE PEARL WAS DANGEROUS IN THE OPEN COURT.

He and #44 were a good RB tandem on a great SU team.
The 80's- when Syracuse basketball was a blast, and ESPN just did sports and didn't engage in PC politics.
ESPN died when it let it's newspaper writers get on tv and talk about everything including sports.
I was at this game- season ticket holder for Cuse. I love the no 3 pt line! :)
the game that made me a Syracuse fan.. never seen it in real life.. listened to it on the radio.. lol.
Amazing video . Thanks for posting . Great memories of SU basketball in the 80s .
i remember watching the orange splatter against the backboard as Ewing shot free throws. It was such an intense rivalry. Bitter hatred of the Hoyas.
back when college basketball rivalries were larger than life. competitive athletes in each other's way for 4 years created such drama.
Joseph Scott True.

My first ever College Basketball game!! And was hooked immediately!🧡🍊🏀
Jim Boeheim and Bill Raftery still at it

But this loss for some reason sees to fly under the radar.
I believe Georgetown lost to St. John's the game before this one, no?
@@shayboogs Yes literally. Cute loss was their second straight in as many games
This was basketball at its finest 🏀
If someone would have told me in February 1985 that a big east team would end up beating G'town in the NCAA finals I would have guessed that it would be Syracuse, not Villanova.
Yep...great point!!
And when a call was made, no complaining from the players. How refreshing

Thank you! Thank you for posting this. Such great memories. Will we ever see anything like this again?
I am a SU fan and I hate Georgetown but Thompson was a hall of famer coach and Ewing was/is the best player in Big East history. Thank God for Carmelo and G-MAC!!!!
That was regular season?!! WOW!!!!
and lastly, in 1988 this team you see here won the game I used to eat in the Schine Student Cafeteria. Sherman Douglas sat on my left, Derrick Coleman on my right, Rony Seikaly sat 3 seats down from me on the same side, and Brower sat on the other side of me a few seats down.

Living in DC as a youngster ..I had the BIG East and the ACC….great times
All-Time Classic From The Dome & The Middle 80's❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
ARGUABLY THE MOST HEATED RIVALRY IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL HISTORY! only one I can recall routinely containing scuffles and fights, because they ALL wanted to WIN so badly!!!
Brooklyn NY loves The Pearl! Boys and Girls High School.
Can't believe Boeheim is still at it
It's crazy how he hasn't lost any passion.
bigeast fans, some of the most ignorant, pathetic etc. Making posters, tossing fruit dam'it stop it.
Jim Boeheim just walking off stoically, he is pure class through and through.
I watched him play in Soul in the Hole 44Park unbelievable ball control with the dribble and to break down the best of defenders.
"He's got it!"... great moment in sports.
We had a hell of a party at TEP after this game.
Today's college basketball is nothing like this. Sad
I love these announcers. “Ewing’s fg % is better than his ft percentage - he makes the first but he DID hit the rim”.
Simi reverse move by pearl Washington brought tears too my eyes
May God Bless Dwayne "Pear"l Washington

Yeah. They really let them play back then. Stop a fight. No ejections. Just play on
For sure. So much stop and go now.
I was at this game up in the rafters!!
Wow, I completely forgot about that awful foam rubber court. So bad on the knees. The basketball equivalent of Astroturf.
Coach Boeheim referenced this game at Pearl's Memorial Service
What....GIANT COACH??? I remember once someone held up a sign saying 'Ewing kan't read DIS'. UNBELIEVABLE.
I was always amused at how John Thompson was physically bigger than just about every other individual on the bench. So when he wanted to sit down, he just dropped his butt wherever he pleased and all the players had to dive out of the way in both directions.

Jim Boeheim has been 50 years old his whole life
I was a student at Syracuse in the eighties, these were incredible times for college basketball, the Big East, and SU... I MISS these days!
The timeouts at the end are just insufferable. Still have this today. Ruins what should be an exciting ending.
Wow, Bill Raftery still at it

Was at this game dads friend worked for SU got us free tickets
Both schools need to go back to these uniforms now.
Rip Pearl
Great game 🍊🍊🍊
Pearl Washington was to nice
Pearl with the game winner.
to be COMPLETELY honest i did do and/or probably will really LOVE patrick ewing
Sad! Some one would do that! Or even say Ewing was a aliterate on a sign! Sad!!
You spelled illiterate wrong. Maybe the fans meant you.
Do you any Georgetown Syracuse from 1984?
1:25:14 ref running = me heading to the fridge to get that last bowl of ice cream
Raftery was 42 here going on 60
Hoyas would not lose again until Villanova
S'han It has not been the entire match.

There has been only ONE quarterback to beat both of these teams;Chad Schwenk.
Rafa Ron other players had game to.
1988 Big East Championship? Nova vs. Syracuse??? Douglas MVP.. if u have it.. lol..
Not too long after this game, ESPN would introduce its shitty logo.
EWING!!!!!

research hank johnson's conduct and settting up my family
Very Jim like to walk off all by himself
