+Valentine G Well, if you're new in art, then what helps most is the ability to have hand control so that what you can translate what you're thinking to paper. There's a lot to it and you bring up a great question. I will make a video this and it should help you and others that are new.

+MrQwerty2524 If you don't want to use a eraser, then you'll need to apply a liquid mask to keep the highlights. A lot of watercolor artist use liquid mask. Or you can try to keep as much as the highlights as you can. It's tough.

I'd have adjusted her hand grip to have left out the...tuft of hair seen in the photo on her chin as it does look odd & beard like, OR I'd have shown her holding the hair but to the SIDE of her face. when working from photographic references any drawing is only as good as the original photo which can often be improved upon & sometimes must be, this is the difference between photography & drawing, or painting/illustration.
Nice vid, but since this is a beginners tutorial, wouldn't it be better explaining basic things like how to set out the correct proportions instead of winging it.

They're graphite lead holders. It's basically the same as any pencils.

+Eiliandis It does takes practice to be able to measure with your eye correctly. But it does work over time. You just need to keep drawing
The Valley between the nose and the lip is called the philtrum - you said you didn't know what it was called while you shaded it.
