Mama Betty

Mama Betty from the Southern Highlands has been living with HIV for 8 years in her community following her husband's infection and death. Since then, she has rebuilt a family, adopting a son, Dominik and his wife and two children.
The 16 minutes production is one of the five Komuniti Tok Piksa (KTP) films on the DVD, 'Harim. Lukim. Painem Aut.' produced by the Centre for Social and Creative Media at the University of Goroka, Papua New Guinea. Working in collaboration with Papua New Guinea Highland communities, the stories reveal the impact of the HIV pandemic on the lives of individuals, families and communities, as told from their own perspectives.

When I grew up, my grandmother, Willie Mary Marshall, was the mother to everyone in the family. My mother's mother, my aunties' mother, my cousins' mother. My mother. Her nickname was "Mother dear" or for short... "M'dear" (madea). I can remember days when she taught me spades. I can remember days when she taught me Go-Fish. I can remember days when she taught me to wipe my ass. The eldest of her daughters was my aunt Betty. Deemed as Mama Betty. The motherly figured of when I came to be, still a motherly figure of our family now.
