I jumped from AT&T to T-Mobile about 17 years ago! I was getting 1/2 of my calls terminated by AT&T with their towers, then with the same phone never got a disconnect from T-Mobile with the same AT&T towers!
Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. DTC approaches this level. I too will be changing to T-Mobile soon, provided it works where I'm moving, because of DTC. Keep on keepin' on, man!
This is honestly a game-changer. The idea of your phone connecting directly to space, without needing cell towers or Wi-Fi, is incredible. For someone like me who films road trips through barangays and small towns, it would make things so much easier. No more worrying about losing signal or hunting for Wi-Fi just to upload or share content. I could stay connected no matter where I go. But it’s bigger than just convenience. This technology could bring internet access to places that have never had it before-remote communities, rural areas-giving people new opportunities for learning, working, and staying in touch. It’s like breaking down the digital barriers between people and places. Honestly, it feels like a glimpse into the future, where the whole world is truly connected, no matter where you are.
So, we live in Cincinnati and are T-Mobile customers. Our daughter goes to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, about 160 miles or 3 hours away. Just about half-way on route 32 near Piketon, in the middle of nowhere, there is a 20-mile or so intermittent dead zone for all cell-phone carriers. It's in a valley with no cell towers visible for miles. It's right where there is a rest stop we always use. If someone were to stop there with car trouble, or an illness, there is no way to call for help. I can't wait to try T-Mobile next time we drive through there for a visit. It makes me nervous when my daughter is driving through there alone. Let's go T-Mo!
I've gone from no such thing as a cellular mobile phone in the 80s, to mobile phones connecting from space... Mind blowing. Thanks for your clear concise descriptions of the latest tech.
You're welcome. From a Star link ROAM subscriber...when traveling in my Motorhome. I feel my 'monthly' fees (though a bit expensive) helped to make this happen.
I just ordered a Starlink Mini kit from Home Depot for ~$405 + tax. They have the Mini at $449, and I get a 10% discount for being a veteran. I'm glad I waited. I'm a trucker, and I'm paying a bit over $100/mo for cellular data, and I typically use 55-60 GB/mo. Going with Starlink's $50/50GB plan will give me better connectivity, and save money.
Funny I just tried it where I live. Our house is in a cell phone dead spot for T-Mobile...so I shut off my wifi calling and just sent text message...it worked! We live in southwestern WA. Very cool stuff!
Thanks for the update! We left AT&T over a year ago and moved to T-mobile and there's no looking back. This is a game changer on rural areas like ours in East Texas!
As you know Joe , I live in the deep woods of Oregon and this is awesome news. I have also noticed that it takes a lot smaller area of open sky for Starlink to work without interruption or dropouts . I'm going to guess that when we get the version 3 satellites up that they will have the ability and power to get through buildings and trees. Thanks for all your hard work for keeping us informed. going to try to make the live stream tonight. Tootall Steve.
My location in Montana doesn’t have cell service, but using the Starlink internet I have very acceptable voice. I’m not seeing the need under my conditions maybe some day.
I am so Siked. I have been with starlink since just shortly after you (was on the waiting list for a bit) Been following you since the beginning. Now I have been waiting for T mobile/starlink DTC since i first heard about it from you. Even though My Verizon service was soo much better, but that will change soon as T-Mobile will definitely be the top dog soon!
Part of the future is here. Awesome. Gives me reason to believe I should give up on Verizon and switch. Love my starlink as we travel alot. Should have jumped on the Costco $299 offer for SL Version 3.
Hi Joseph, love this subject having a previous career in communications via (old school) satellite, microwave, fiber, WiFi and other. I believe some folks who have iPhone 14 or newer have satellite texting in the U.S. now. I’ve never tried it but will next time I’m in the wilderness. 😊 Thanks for helping us stay engaged. 🚀
Just used iPhones satellite texting when we had a massive storm and power outage when T-Mobiles towers were down. No internet, no cell service but I could get texts out via satellite so that was very helpful.
Incredibly great news. This is also a great PR for T-Mobile. Especially with you coming up administration, Elon’s project will go forward in a turbo mode. Thanks for sharing the video.
Im on T mobile with a iphone 13 pro max..After many posts and videos(This one included) telling me it will work DTC..Space x is telling me i need a Iphone 14 or newer..Whats the scoop on this Joe?..I am in the middle of nowhere WV with no chance of cell service ever getting out here..But i do have starlink thank goodness..Great video as always buddy..Dave
Excited to give a shot. Im out West, and there are huge swaths of these states that I travel that have zero cell service for hours. This will be very welcome.
Side note to everybody that has a starlink dish. Enable voice over Internet protocol on your cell phone or VoIP for short. That way if you're in an area with no cell coverage you can still make phone calls through your starlink dish using VoIP. 👍
Exciting news! Thanks again as always, for the update! Roger’s has partnered with them here in Canada. I’m hoping more than one carrier can jump onboard. Rogers isn’t available near me. It’s mostly Bell here in Newfoundland. What are your thoughts on that, Joseph? Do we stand a chance? lol
I'm not sure how SpaceX DTC antanas work, but many modern antanas can change their focus intencity and coverage area. I am guessing it is a phased array which would be very focusable. If I need to call the US I have a Skype account. There places where there is no connectivity here in Philippines, especially in the mountains around here. So how do I test DTC here? Do I need to find one of these dead spots for both SIMs, turn off the WiFi connection, and try to text someone? When you say turn off the internet connection for calls, is that just stopping all WiFi connections?
I wonder if Musk is considering DTC for Starlink subscribers in the future. Verizon is the only wireless that I can access in my area so that would be helpful. My signal is typically 120 db and barely usable. Can't even use a cell booster at that anemic signal strength.

Lock in your Tmobile contracts now they were first to end fighting Elon and therefore took the lead over others.

Another great vid, brother!
This is awesome, have T-Mobile and Starlink. I'm hoping in the future, we won't need cell towers at all.
Incredibly great news. This is also a great PR for T-Mobile. Especially with you coming up administration, Elon’s project will go forward in a turbo mode. Thanks for sharing the video.
We are supposed to get it in Canada next year via rogers Canada.
While that is good to know! As long as our CRTC regulator agrees
It could happen. Great
Great Video!
😎 fantastic
Oh crap, I clicked on the link before the video ended 💩

Good timing for a bit of "needed off grid times"
Hopefully, we will in Australia get it as I work in very remote areas where coverage is non-existent.
Love that feed🚀🚀🚀
Very good and informative video!😊
Awesome! But living in Romania,Europe, have to be patient❤
Hopefully this arrives also in Europe soon🎉

Starlink (shipment pending), on my to do list and T-Mobile here we come!
Excellent
good thing in practice🤠🤠 here in texas
10 MBs per second is throughput, not bandwidth. Bandwidth is measured in frequency… 10 MHz in bandwidth :)🎉
I used the satellite texting last month in Virginia on my Verizon phone.
I also have Verizon because of where we live. Here I was thinking I had to have T-Mobile to do this satellite comm. Curious what cell phone you use?
Excited to give a shot. Im out West, and there are huge swaths of these states that I travel that have zero cell service for hours. This will be very welcome.
Good video
Stretch out that tin can a little further hun! Glad DTC is finally all done.
JCristina, do you eventually see Starlink exceeding fiber speeds?
🚀
Side note to everybody that has a starlink dish. Enable voice over Internet protocol on your cell phone or VoIP for short. That way if you're in an area with no cell coverage you can still make phone calls through your starlink dish using VoIP. 👍

I wish I could post a GIF in the comments. I'd post Snoopy doing his happy dance.
Do we stand a chance? lol
I like the idea of DTC, just don't like the T-Mobile requirement, what will they jack up the monthly fee up too just because of this feature?
Thanks for the great video, will the service in 2025 be able to deliver IoT as well as USSD ?
Being that low they can incorporate breathing satellites that take in ions from the thin atmosphere and use it to maintain altitude.
I'm not sure how SpaceX DTC antanas work, but many modern antanas can change their focus intencity and coverage area. I am guessing it is a phased array which would be very focusable. But I could be wrong, I have not red the specifications on the satellites. Also, the satellites that are four times bigger likely have 10 times more antanas, each of which could be individualy focused.
🎉🎉
Hey can you comment on the salt typhoon? THKS
Bring it on NOW! 😅 waiting an waiting for this. Flip the switch an blow those other tele-coms out of the water. Leave it to t mobile for 2 years.
Proof THERE is a Santa, I told you so!
📱😀👍
If you have tmobile, nothing has changed. You been able to send a text with no signal. But looking forward to those beams inproving so I can game online and on a plane. That is when it will be a game changer. But for now a text is cool for life saving situations. On Iphone I have to share my live location forever with a trusted person for satelite texting to work. So there’s that detail to make sure not to forget for this to work. It’s in the settings in messaging.
Will it work for T-Mobile customer when traveling outside US?
Yea, global. I am in Mexico at the moment and works
If only they can open up Lusaka, Zambia and increase capacity once more
👍👍
Is it supposed to work on AT&T in Alaska now?
Will this be the first global cellphone service? 🚀 🚀 🚀
No, you can already do Sat text with newer iPhones using GSAT
@kizb09 that work globally? If I go to Japan it will work without local service?
👏
First comment 😂🇺🇸

about 4million cell towers in on earth.. im not gonna do the math, but that would be a lot of ground electricity saved solar is used to generate thrust
❤
Uh oh you said Australia. Been a SL user since beta days. The Aussie have always had the best BW as posted on Reddit. I remember when at any given moment they had 3x the satellites above then South Texas. 😂
🤘🕶️🍻❗
Doesn't it have to be a newer iphone? during testing the DTC worked on my wife's iphone 16 but it doesn't work on my iPhone 13mini.
Does the DTC use the 5G band of frequencies?
Has T-mobile collaborated with other mobile services to get this out to other Countries?
I’m gonna go full starlink first chance.
I do worry about space junk though. It’s getting pretty crowded in the LEO lane. Kessler Syndrome?? 🥺
His satellites come down automatically and land to avoid space junk. 🎉
@@fernandolopez4895 oh interesting. Thanks!

OK, I admit that I am lost on how to test this in my area in the Philippines. I have a dual SIM card iPhone with one SIM for T-Mobile international plan and one SIM for local calls. My T-Mobile plan gives me free text and ‘unlimited’ data, and I have my iPhone set up for this. I use my local SIM for local calls, because T-Mobile charges $0.25/min on international calls.
