- After a month off, she comes back a little rusty, but still shows she has the drive and work ethic to get the job done.
Little Pumpkin blows off the Away command because she thinks we are doing the usual penning to a pen that is off to the right of the barn. She doesn't realize I'm going to ask her to pen to a new place. This job requires her to navigate the burn pile, the small pond, and the old hay feeder as the sheep try to avoid her by using these solid objects to their advantage. I like this setup because it is real world. Quite often, herding is much more than a pristine pasture devoid of obstacles that make the dog think more about their work. The sheep like the burn pile and pond as avoidance. Add to it the fact that I made sure they couldn't get to their usual pen, and NO ONE knows the plan, but me. Dog did a great job of cutting them off before they all blew past the pen. The sheep have never been put in this pen so it is truly a new task for everyone. Real work. Good dog.
